Good stuff! I basically just put up this topic to test the waters. Wanted to see if I get an intelligent responses. So far it's 50/50

Considering that Buddhism is more a philosophy than a system of beliefs, and it wouldn't preclude you from (christian party line inc) accepting Jesus Christ as your savior, and believing in the one true God his father blah blah blah, I believe you could be both simultaneously.

Anyone who'd like to correct me is welcome to, but... True buddhists don't believe that Buddha was anything more than a normal man with a philosophy which made sense. You don't actually pray to Buddha etc. The religion is the philosophy, not idol-worship ala Christianity.

theres one branch of buddhism(not even gonna try in this state of mind) that acknowlages buddah as a god similar to the way christians do with jesus, and another that sees him as a prophet, or founding father of a philosophy etc

...I would just say fuck the guidelines and believe what you want to believe, not what you can or cannot believe according to some group of people

In fact I would say more than yes. I would say that if you read the New Testament without listening to anyone else tell you what it says you will find a lot of similarities with teachings of Buddah.

If you believe the basic teachings of Christanity and has accepted Christ as your personal savior and Lord then the life you live should be in accordance with those beliefs. Many of the Buddist teaching to IMHO so I think it fits rather nicely

Of course you can't worship Buddah as a god though and be a Christian, those don't mix.

I was told by an actual Buddhist that the whole, worshipping Buddha as a diety/god/etc. was totally incorrect and that Buddha would have likely just smiled and nodded at those people.

I find Buddhism far more interesting and applicable than Christianity.

There are some good things in all Religions.

I'm a Taoist that also believes in Jesus Christ as the embodiment of the living Tao.

Buddhist/Taoist/Shinto and Christianity are very compatible belief systems for many of the reasons stated by others here.

And yeah, Buddha would most likely have been very confused with anyone that considered him a god when he was alive.

It's a way of life, not a religion.

You can be a christian, and try to apply certain principles of buddhism to your life.

But at some point, the doctrines will collide...and you'll either have to decide, or contradict yourself. Either way, I doubt the jesus would be very happy with you.

I used to live next door to a huge buddhist monestary here in greater vancouver. couldn't ask for nicer neighbors; the monks are always around talking to everyone. They also had a wonderful library and they let anyone who wanted to use it. Why don't you mix your favorite parts of both religions and make a new one? Seems to be the thing to do lately. All the new age and confused youth would make a beeline since it sounds kinda hip and new. Just work out an advertising deal with Old Navy and I think we may be on to something.

I believe you can be anything you want in your heart, I just wouldn't tell my Roman Catholic priest that I'm partially Buddhist or whatever else. Somehow I sense he wouldn't take this well. And the last thing I want is getting into a discussion with a priest about how good of a Christian I am.
Those always end up with feeling guilty and reciting Hail Mary 20 times.

i would say no. if christianity or buddhism alone couldn't fulfill my spiritual needs, i wouldn't want to follow either doctrine. if you truly embrace christianity, then there is no need for another religion.

If you are considering yourself a christian as someone who takes some of the jesus' sermons from the new testament and lives by them, then yes, they'll compliment. But if you are a god fearing christian, then no, you are in for a world of trouble.

Buddhism is a life style. There is no god that half of the religion worships. Go look it up, buddhism is reaching enlightenment. Anyone wanna take a crack at what 'the buddha' means? THE ENLIGHTENED ONE.

So yes, you can be christian and buddhist. Believe christ is our savior, and believe that you can reach a state of wisdom, or enlightenment. (i do realize there are other teachings for buddhists, but that is the main one that i see.)

I was thinking about this too. Your right, it won't work if you're a christian zealot/fanatic who is closed minded about your beliefs (nevermind the fact that the bible itself tell you not to be). If you're moderate Christian you can be buddhist to any level you want.

True story. During the whole 2000 preshow that was happening December 31st, 2000 before we got to Y2k, Larry King live had the Dalai Lama and one of the promenant televangelists (I think Billy Graham) on his show. He asked the Dalai Lama what he thought of Jesus, and the Dalai Lama said that he thought Jesus was a great man who helped others or something similar. I believe he described Jesus as enlightened. In the next segment King asks Graham or whomever what he thinks of Buddha. He said something to the effect of Buddhism being a sham and rambled on about sinning and fear and Jesus. Pretty funny imo.

I looked all over for the transcript, but I couldn't find it to quote from it. If someone has linkage to the transcript, I'd love to reread it.
