I have entirely forgetten to sign receipts or checks a couple times...
But they always went through.
My signature has been reduced to a squiggle....not even I can read it, nor do I care. The first 2 letters are semi-legible..but after that, I just kind of lose interest in it....it's just a wavy line.
I have seen people use thier wives or girlfriends cards, even thier moms cards....I'm talking men. And it's not the signature, it's the actual name on the card...completely legible.
I did enjoy seeing how far you could take it. I should try and draw a nice picture right in front of the clerk...maybe even sign the back of my creditcard that way in case they have an issue with it.

1 in 20 merchants actually compares the two to see if they match. They don't care really. I guess they figure if it was a lost/stolen card the owner would have reported it by now and it wouldn't have gone through.
I have that 'Check ID' thing on the back (Post Offices wont take it like that BTW. Not sure on other government agencies) and hardly anyone even looks at the back.
(I made that 1 in 20 up based on personal experience)

My normal signature is my full first and last name, pretty legible unless I'm in a hurry. Usually in a long line in the store the checkout person is looking at me funny when I take more than 2 seconds to sign the slip so I shorten it a bit.
Only time my shortened crooked signature didn't go thru is when we bought the house and the woman at closing made me resign 2 papers because it didn't match my "official", as she said it, sig on my drivers licence. So next time I'm renewing my DL I just need to remember to sign as simple as I can.

I haven't bothered to get a credit card myself, but whenenver I need to make a large purchase, I always sign my own name on somoene elses card. No one has ever cared.

Closest thing I had to this was around 12 years ago when I finished up AF basic training in San Antonio TX.
My mom came down to visit at graduation, and felt I needed to have a copy of her husbands credit card for emergencies. The card was in my father in laws name, last name completely different.
I then proceeded to use the card at dozens of shops in TX, even rented a car on it for a week.
I just told the clerks, it was a "gift card" from my stepdad. The back was unsigned by him, so I just signed my own name lol.
Once i did get a compare of the signature, but it matched my ID, so it was good lol
