If you are into tricked out performance street cars, this may be the car for you.

Be sure to watch the video too!

Looks like mine except I removed the passenger door and the hood for more weight reduction...and added more high performance stickers.

The thing I find funny about all those kids with their 'tricked' cars, is how they all put the giant wings on cars like Civics, Accords, etc. The humor is, spoilers are generally designed to create downforce to correct any lateral acceleration that might be happening due to acceleration. Not only are the cars in question never going to go fast enough to require downforce, half of the wings out there are so generic and stupid that a lot of these boy racers are probably generating lift. :P

haha that car is funny

the fanmail he's gotten over it is great, too

I doubt they're getting any lift from those things. They are however, pushing down on the back end of front wheel drive cars, and usually deminishing horsepower from the tires to the road (roof scoops and side air intakes on front engine cars are another brilliant idea).

I really enjoy hitting the gas and outrunning bling-mobiles in the wife's full size, 4 door truck. You can hear the poor squirrels under the hood screaming for mercy when they try to go fast.

I saw a "Type R" Saturn last night at the grocery store, too funny :)

Ok, my last post was rather mean... but really, those wee-cars are pretty funny..

I do like the Subaru WRX though(sans bling, of course) ;)

It depends on the angle of the wing. Given that there are some wings designed for multiple cars, and given that those same cars have completey different angles for their trunks, it's entirely possible that they are generating upforce of lift. Even a small amount would fuck up their handling at high speed.

If the Kitty Hawk (the Wright Bros. plane) was raped by an '87 Civic, that is what their bastard child would look like.

Yes, I was kidding...my car is not much nicer but it is without the stupid crap.

I drive a 96 Sunfire (2.4L Twin Cam, Manual), but I bought it in 96 (the week I graduated college)...since I work from home the miles are really low, I just broke 60k recently. And most of the miles were driving Atlanta-->Cincy to visit family...now I live in Cincy. I get gas every 6 weeks or so heh. Not worth getting a new car, I figure I have 1-2 years left on ths one. I enjoy the financial freedom that no car payment and $400/6mo insurance(full coverage) provides.

As for Spoilers....my sunfire seems to handle way better at 90+ then my Grand Am did. The rear end sticks to the road better on turns at high speed. Since the Grand Am probably had a stiffer frame and better suspension (It was SE "Sports Entusiast" with the V6 3.0) I don't know what to attribute that to except the spoiler...

Crappy cars can go fast, just thier initial acceleration is slower....My Sunfire used to go 125 MPH until I melted some stuff and got it back...they installed a fuel regulator at 105 MPH...but I hit that cap all the time, I hit it last night actually...some dude wanted to race...he won when my regulator kicked in. Why he wanted to race my Sunfire I dunno, but he almost lost....it was neck and neck until 105. So sad.

As for Aranuil..can you explain this more?

I thought it was to provide a downward force at high speeds so you stick to the road? By lateral acceleration during accelration I assume your speaking of like when Scrimps slams his pedal and the rear tires smoke and the back end fishtails (he has a brand new mustang V8, manual). When he fishtails it's generally when he is going 0-30, due to his tires braking traction sure, but at that point the air currents pushing down on his spoiler are fairly minimal so the effect would be next to nothing correct?

I'm not trying to be cocky, I know very little about cars, I just apply logic...and in this case my logic seems wrong so I have to ask why.

Also to the guy about the WRX, the Subaru WRX STi is nice looking, it has a bit of bling, but it's factory bling so it looks ok. It's 300HP too...

While were asking questions about cars....since my car is old, I've been looking at a new car...I was curious power-wise...if say you see a car with 175 HP 6-speed manual and only 125 Torque or so...what does that mean? Is it kinda zippy or is it a motorized roller skate? High HP usually means fast but it usually has high torque also. The car I'm referring to is the Pontiac Vibe (which is ugly as hell on the outside btw). A new sunfire with the Ecotech(?) Engine is like 140HP and 150 torque or something...which is faster?

Pontiac makes some ugly fucking cars. And they splash 'Pontiac' all over the damn thing so you know who made such a monstrosity. Aztek and Vibe being good examples.

I guess most of their others aren't bad. It's mostly the Pontiac branding all over that I find tacky.

The faster you're going, the more air is travelling under the car pushing it up away from the ground, diminishing traction and speed. Fishtailing at low speeds really has nothing to do with this (actually it does, but I don't feel like getting into the physics of moving vs non moving objects). It occurs due to the energy being created by the spinning tires having nowhere else to go. The sudden burst in energy at the tires doesn't have the torque to push the car ahead, so it takes the easy way out and pushes outwards (only taking on part of the weight of the car instead of the whole thing) causing the ass end to sway back and forth untill the tires can grip and move the car forward.

A spoiler increases downward force over the rear tires (or front tires for a front end spoiler), canceling out more of the air pushing up from underneath, and helping the tires grip the ground better (more traction = more power from the wheels to the ground = more speed). Putting a rear spoiler on a front wheel drive car can push the front end of the car up, and actually lessen traction on the drive wheels, making it slower and harder to control (unless you balance it with a front spoiler). Of course at normal driving speeds, most of this means little to nothing.

Very basic (and somewhat flawed, but you get the general idea) explanation, but Horsepower = top end speed, Torque = power off the line. A high horsepower engine will make the wheels spin fast, but it means nothing if it doesn't have the torque to push/pull the car. In theory, the Vibe will be the faster (once momentum takes over for the lack of torque) overall car, while the Sunfire will probably be faster off the line, and be able to pull more. Of course, weight, aerodynamics and general design of the cars will also come into play here.

Well, I don't really need top end speed much past 100 MPH. So I guess something with higher torque then 125 would be nice. My sunfire has 150 torque...I'd hate to take a 15%'ish cut in off the line power. It's already about the least I would want.

You know, my wife used to have a civic just like that, same year, same color. We donated it to charity a couple of years ago. You dont suppose ....

BTW, WRXs are damn fun to drive. I came close to buying one a year ago.

A co-worker of mine has a WRX. For the price it's very nice, but not enough to take on my M3 :)

I used to street race my 500 hp 93 Mustang back when I was in my late teens/early 20's........until traffic tickets, common sense and maturity finally made me see the light.
