Study: Sleeping Position Reveals Personality Traits
LONDON (Reuters) - Whether it's curled up in the fetal position, flat on the stomach or stretched out across the bed, the way people sleep reveals their personality, a British sleep expert said Tuesday.
Professor Chris Idzikowski, director of the Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service and a visiting professor at the University of Surrey in southern England, has identified six common sleep positions and what they mean.
"We are all aware of our body language when we are awake but this is the first time we have been able to see what our subconscious says about us," he said.
Crouched in the fetal position is the most popular sleep pattern and favored by 51 percent of women, according to the results of the study he conducted for a large hotel group.
Fetal sleepers tend to be shy and sensitive while people who assume the soldier position, flat on their back with arms at their sides, are quiet and reserved.
Sleeping on one's side with legs outstretched and arms down in what Idzikowski refers to as the log, indicates a social, easy-going personality. But if the arms are outstretched in the yearner position, the person tends to be more suspicious.
The freefall, flat on the tummy with the hands at the sides of the head, is the most unusual position. Only 6.5 percent of people prefer it and they are usually brash and gregarious.
Unassuming, good listeners usually adopt the starfish position -- on the back with outstretched arms and legs.
Idzikowski, who identified the positions by comparing personality traits of people, their preferred way of sleeping and the most common positions, said once a sleeping style is adopted it is rarely changed.
"What's interesting is that the profile behind the posture is often very different from what we would expect," he added in a statement.
Interesting. I'm not sure if it's totally true, like with every study there are exceptions, but it seems to hold true to what I can tell about those people who's sleeping patterns I know.
Can't agree really with the statement that once you fall into some pattern you stay that way. My sleeping position seems to change depending on room temperature and who's next to me.
What you guys think about this study?

And frequency of bodily functions.
My sleeping 'position' changes too frequently for me to believe the one position description fits all theory. Then again, perhaps I'm just schizo.

I'd have to say I probably go through each of those positions and hundreds more every night.
I'd have to say my sleep position would be called the "flail" - where you flail about incessantly throughout the night disturbing, punching, slapping, kicking or otherwise annoying anyone unlucky enough to be sleeping beside you.

If I go to sleep, or somehow end up on my stomach.... I wake up screaming like someone put a fucking vice on my spine. Not sure if that is normal, but it sucks cuz I can almost instantly fall asleep on my stomach. Chiro Time!

I am a hardcore stomach sleeper with my hands down by my sides. I lovingly call it "assuming the position" when I'm ready to fall asleep. Of course, now that I'm pregnant I have to sleep on my side, which SUCKS.

The one time I slept standing up it lasted 10 minutes before the boss noticed...I was trying to keep 3 jobs at the same time, after 2-3 months it caught up with me hardcore.
I'm still surprised I didn't fall over...I wasn't leaning on anything...I was walking when it happened. I just woke up with like 3 guys staring at me and the boss asking me to go home and rest.
It wasn't quite that position though winnow.

Fetal and soldier mostly for me, but I do all of those sometimes, just rarely for the others. If someone is sleeping near me though, I always end up sleeping right beside them with my arm around em, EVERY time, even if they push me off I go right back. Went to a party over the weekend and we camped out after it (was in some woods, by a creek), and my ex-GF, who I was sleeping beside, said I put me arm around her like over 25 times during the night, until she finally gave up pushing it off haha. Oh, and its not just some subconcious sexual thing about wanting to be near a girl with my hand around her...cause I do it if theres a guy sleeping near me too, very strange!

I believe I am most comfortable sleeping on my chest while hugging the pillow almost lengthwise, like a body pillow. I do however rotate so that if I am laying on my back I will shift to my left side, then to my chest, then to my right side, to my back and then start all over again. Not sure how many times I do this in a night.
Anyone wake up and flip their pillow over?

Depends on the weather
If it's cold out curled up next to the wife. If it's hot sprawled out on my stomach. I can sleep anytime, anywhere in just about any position.
From what the doctor told me when I was having back problems, sleeping with no pillow on you back is best overall. Sleeping on your stomach and using a big pillow being the worst.

The other day I tore all the blankets, pillows, and sheets off my bed, knocked my lamp and fan off my nightstand, and woke up sleeping horizontally across my twin bed with everything within reach in a pile on the floor.

i woke up one morning with a blood clot in my nose. After washing my face in the bathroom, i see a bloodstain on the floor and blood all over my pillow.
I fell out of bed on my nose, got up while still asleep, and laid back down.

Yeah, probably, but I never remember then unless I wake up.
Story: Last year one of my friends burst into my room at 9:30 on a saturday morning with blood all over his face. I asked him what the hell was going on, and he said that he woke up on his floor with blood all over hsi face, his floor, and his dresser, and he had no idea what happened. He went to the hospital and got 15 stitches to seal up his forehead, but not after taking a grilling from the doctors who couldn't believe that whatever happened didn't wake him up. The best explanation we have is that he fell off his bed (top bunk), hit his forehead on the corner of his dresser, and slumped to the floor... asleep. Of course, alcohol played a role in that one.

You'll have to almost schedule your sleep around feeding, baths, walks etc. etc.
Try it with three baby daughters.
I wouldn't wish that first year on anyone, not even Kooky!
