Carnivale

Post by Fesuni Chopsui »

A new dark drama coming to HBO this fall...the show, apparently, surrounds a group of "carnes" and reveals the truth about the dark lives that people within the circus actually live - it involves dark satanic rituals and some kind of obsession with the "bringer of Light" (IE: The main protagonist of the show)....anywho, if you saw Terminator 3, you will be glad to know that they are giving the guy that plays John Conner a chance at a serious roll as the main character in this show - the rest of the cast, from what I have seen is also excellent

Verdict: Keep your eye on this one!

"Bringer of Light" or "Lightbringer" are names for Lucifer fyi. Not sure if that's relevant to the use in the show or not, but that's the deal.

I've had my eye on this one as well. I think it looks X-File-ish in it's presentation. It does have a great cast and I hope it lives up to my expectations.

****Some Spoilers Ahead****

The show revolves around two primary characters. One is a preacher named Justin Crowe who has been having visions that he believes are being shown to him by God. The other character is a man in his 20s named Ben Hawkins who has hid his gift of healing from others more than likely due to his mother's rants about him being marked by the devil for his power, and a warning of, "You give life you gotta take it from something else."

After stumbling upon Ben Hawikins who is seen burying his recently deceased mother, Samson, the head of the carnival, has been given specific instructions from "Management" to hire Ben Hawkins on full time. The reasons for this decision will probably be revealed in future episodes.

The series looks like your typical good vs. evil show, however it's the characters that will make this series different from others. The characters in of themselves range from your typical carnival workers like the lizard man, the siamese twins, the strong man, fortune teller, the bearded lady and the dancers.

Then their's more mystical ones like the lady who lies in bed all day in a catatonic/comatose state but who can still communicate with her fortune telling, card-reading daughter. A man who seemingly has the ability to read minds and who warns the leader of the carnival group that Ben Hawkins is possibly dangerous after he tries to read his dreams and almost kills himself in the process.

The season premiere kicked ass and it leaves you with so many questions you want to continue watching it to see where it all leads. I'm especially interested in seeing who's on what side as it seems to be a classic story of the Christ and Anti-Christ figure both of which have no idea of what they are and where their destiny lies.

I believe the show revolves around the carnival as the last bastion of mystical energy. Of wonder that was eventually traded off for reason, as stated in the beginning of the pilot.

Definitely catch this show if you have HBO. It's on Sundays at 9pm with a repeat on Wednesday in the same time slot.

Episodes first appear on HBO sundays at 9 (or maybe 9:30 I can't remember) est. Rest of the week is wednesday's roughly same time slot and saturday's as well.

And yes, the owner of Chin's with that asian boy was extremely freaky.

The kid in Chins was the 2nd episode...3rd was last night. THis so far is a great series. The fortune teller is getting the info from her mother I dont think she has any talent at it, but thats just my opnion from the way she seems to appear to be listening as shes telling a fortune. But this is a great show. Sundays at 9pm est 1hour long, it repeats for me on another HBO at midnight heh I have like 8 HBOs so I watch it at midnight so I dont miss Law and Order Criminal INtent hehe

So now that the first season is over, what did you all think? I watched it pretty religiously; I really liked it. I'm interested to find out more about "Management" and what exactly is up with Brother Justin.

I just hope it doesn't take them 18 months to come out with the next season like they do with the Sopranos.

I watched every episode but the last one due to moving, will catch a repeat this week I hope. My wife and I were hooked on this show, it's so different. I am impressed that they managed to pull off a mystical quality to the early 20th century, pretty creative writers they have. Brother Justin has to become a cruel monster, will be interesting to see his carnage in the name of 'purification'.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised that like 4 or 5 of the main characters appeared to be killed off. But I bet it will end up being far less than that.

Anyone seen the movie Magnolia? The end music to the season finale sounded almost identical to a composition done in Magnolia. But I checked and wasn't the same guy. Kinda wondered if the creator was inspired by (or ripped off) Jon Brion. Either way it doesn't matter. It added some great atmosphere for the events leading up to the end of the episode. Especially with Brother Justin's Voiced over sermon for the events.

Carnivale is back, who watched the season premiere last night?

I missed the first 20 minutes or so, need to catch a repeat. Unfortunately I don't recall all of what happened last season, but it appears this season is starting off with a bang. I believe there's an encore showing of it tonight at 8pm EST on HBO.

I'm afraid that'd be pretty difficult to put in a nutshell. If I were you I'd check and see if it's out on DVD and watch that. Or if you have OnDemand, i think that season one is currently on HBO OnDemand.

There are only 13 episodes, shouldn't take too long to get caught up.

[Show]
Ben finally caught up with Scutter. Is Management dead or not? And wtf is with the blue blood. Interesting finally seeing him.
I'm guessing we're less than 3 episodes from the season finale, what with Deadwood starting in a couple weeks and all.

Episode before that, there is an accident on the ferris wheel. A lady saw him drinking a shot of whiskey earlier in the day. The carnivale takes off, leaving the mob in hte dust.. so they thought. The husband of the lady that died kidnapped Jonesy and his girl, then drug him out and tared and feathered him while his bride watched.. you got to watch his skin blister and all that, was pretty cool. I cringed when they shoved the hot tar in his mouth.

That was a great episode. The show is so overwhelmingly dark it's nice to see something really good happen.
[Show]
Jonesy is one of the only honest people in the whole damn show, it's nice to see him get healed. My heart lept when he realized he was no longer crippled...that was a really great scene.
Btw, the Deadwood season premier, holy fucking god that was great. The fight scene was so fucking badass. Fuck!

Apparently they had it planned as a 2-season deal from the get go, so there are currently only 2 episodes left until the series is over.

While I really like the show, it'll be nice to have closure.

I saw no closure on the second season's finale. It seemed to leave everything wide open. I suppose they wanted to leave the option of a 3rd season open, and they certainly have.

Yeah, from doing more research it appears that the creator was being cryptic and contradictory, not sure how much was on purpose and how much was undecided.
[Show]
one of the things that he said was that the child of light and child of darkness both HAD to be male, and it appears he went against that with making Sophie now the child of dark.
Perhaps it just ended up doing better than they'd originally planned and they added more to the story, but it certainly looks like season 3 will be coming.
