What songs stand out as having excellent or amazing guitar work to you?

Do not say all Clapton, or all Jimi because we know this, pick ONE. If you like Randy Rhoads please say so, then I can ignore the rest of what you
post. What songs would you all add to a CD of amazing guitar work.

Examples would be: Stranglehold Ted Nugent or Cocaine by Clapton.

I'll probably be flamed but oh well, Richie Sambora is another great guitarist. Neal Schonn (sp?) is really good as well (see his solo cd's).

Never got into Yngwie or his types. Technically great, but absolutely no feeling and boring to listen to. How many times can you listen to scales at hyper-speed? *yawn*

Well, not sure if you are restricting this to only the 6 string guitar, but I would have to say that Cliff Burton's work with the bass guitar on Anesthesia is incredible.

In our day and age, on the 6 string, I would have to hands down give it to Jack Johnson.

By no means is he the most intricate guitarist, but his music is right on and full circle, almost "timeless".

If you guys haven't heard "Brushfire Fairie Tales", I suggest picking the CD up for some laid-backedness.

Also, The Mars Volta is a great, serious riff driven semi-punk band (2 of the guys from At the Drive In = The Mars Volta)

I think of Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page when it comes to guitars and memorable riffs and solos. It's raw and powerful. Look elsewhere for technical guitar recommendations.

Immigrant Song (power riff drives this song although Plant's singing dominates it)
Misty Mountain Hop (just for the riff...doesn't need to be complex to kick ass)
Stairway to Heaven (near the end when all hell breaks loose..between 5:35 and 6:45 : )

The Dance of Eternity by Dream Theater - about 6 minutes of full-blown insanity in the first degree.

Dream Theater is more about collectivizations of the band rather than just guitar though. If you're looking for just guitar, look at any John Petrucci or Jason Becker. Some of the Liquid Tension Experiment stuff is also very good.

These guitarists are only if you're looking for skill - and most of the more "skillful" musicians are much less not part of the mainstream spectrum. Jimi Hendrix really wasn't that great of a player, he was just an innovator for his time.

Also I would put several different songs on an "amazing guitar work" compilation CD. Maybe more on the scale of etude-like guitar sounds and whatnot, its hard to really deem something as the "best" because there is a ton of good shit out there. Lots of people are only into classic rock guitar but there is a lot of modern stuff that is a bit more impressive than that - classic rock is just that, classic - it is stuff that maintains respect in our memory. Most of this stuff is more on the basis of challenge and whatnot - and if you're up for a challenge you might understand it. Dream Theater is more about those really challenging and thrilling guitar parts (and keyboard parts, and drum parts, and bass parts - its all amazing) in odd times and stuff. Maybe something like this:

Something like that. I can't think of a lot of other songs that make me go "wow" any more. A lot of the classic rock is good, but most of it is for listening to if you want to have a good time rather than go "wow".

Note I didn't list any Pink Floyd in my above list. To me none of them stand out as wizardy, but just like Carlos Santana, David Gilmore is in a class by himself as they can add more feeling to one or two notes than most guitarist can in a whole disc.

Winnow, I agree that Over the Hills... may be one of the best songs every. Truly a classic in every sense of the word.

Completely agree you on Dream Theater. I have been into them since 1989. I haven't really tried the Liquid Tension CD's yet. I have a friend who is into it though. Dream Theater is more than a band. Their talent, the way they build their songs is reminiscent of the composers of old in many ways.

Hey Dream Theatre fans, you forgot "pull me under"

I'm a huge fan of Stevie Ray Vaughn personally. His version of pipeline, life by the drop, voodoo child and a few others are some of the best.

There's a few metallica songs that are oldies but greats, that makes me want to cry because i hear their shit now and see how much they have changed.

I'll have to agree with Xaem, if you want 'good' guitar songs based upon skill, Dream Theater and John Petrucci is where you'd want to put your money. I prefer the stuff from 'Images and words', with master pieces such as 'Learning to live' and Metropolis part 1 - 'The miracle and the sleeper'.

Another great guitarist is Michael Romeo from Symphony X (try 'Sea of lies' and 'Accolade'). Oh, and I just have to mention some old school jazz guitarists such as George Benson and Mark Whitfield with followers like Kevin Eubanks (yeah, the guy from the tonight show) and Pat Metheny.

A couple I think are awsome are Liquid Tension Experiment consisting of Tony Levin(Bass), John Petrucci(Guitar), Mike Portnoy(Drums)(So much hate for this guy now and what he's after doing to Dream Theater) and Jordan Rudess(Keyboards).

Another awsome one is Attention Deficit consiting of Alex Skolnick(Guitar), Tim Alexander(Drums, one who played for Primus) and Michael Manring(quite possible the best Bass player in the world).

Both are intrumentals.
