What type of funeral?

Was at one earlier today - a somber, depressing thing - where everyone was in tears and the like, and it seemed to reafirm my wish that this isn't the way I want to go.

I'm thinking about donating my body to science, and whatever organs that can be used for transplants, ect, then having a mardigras style funeral / burial.. good music, dancing, et al. I'd like to be buried with one of my favorite songs in the background, like "More Human Than Human" or "Wake Me Up Inside" playing.. probably the latter.

How about you guys?

Irish wake. I'm 50% Irish, 50% Scot.

Everyone gets drunk in my honor!

Funerals are depressing, Akaran. I must have heard a variation of what you've said a hundred times or more.

"I just went to a funeral and it was depressing. When I die, I don't want anyone to be sad, I want them to celebrate my life and have a good time".

A noble goal, but without planning/arrangements on your part, your funeral arrangements will likely be made by a relative, who is distraught, and overwhelmed with your passing, looking for some way to ease the burden will take the "easy" way out with a generic funeral package. Funerals are sad, not because they are drab and boring, but because they are a social occassion where the guest of honor is dead.

Irish wakes are traditional, if your family is Irish, and it may be planned for in your passing, but if it isn't tradition, I wouldn't expect one.

Cremation and a private service on the family farm.

I figure half the people in a graveyard I wouldn't want to spend the evening with, why should I spend eternity with em?

Ash pretty much nailed it.

In addition, they can be VERY expensive from what I understand. Just the box can cost a ton.

I like the cremation idea as well Fall, but i'm Jewish so chances are it's going to be standard Jewish fare. Sad part is, my wife isn't so we're not even sure where we can be buried together.

Damn, I'm already sad

I don't even wanna think about it, althought maybe I should.
If I can have it my way I'd say do it the cheapest way and bury me here, though I bet my family will try to ship me back to Poland

yeah traditions can be weird

no kidding Chid, why did I even clicked on thread mentioning a funeral

You're Polish Ennia? Were you born here, and your parents immigrants?

The reason for cremation is that you can't bury a body outside a cemetary here, you can do anything you want with ashes.

I've put a hell of a lot of myself into this farm, taken a lot of nutrients (both physical and spiritual) out of it. Seems appropo to give my remains to the place when I am gone.

FYI, I just went through the whole funeral thing with my mothers Dad a few weeks ago. If you truly want to save those you lvoe a lot of pain and time, pick a family member you trust and gift them whatever the law will allow you over time rather than going through estate transfer. It's a fucking mess and brings out the worst in people.

Sent out dead on a burning vikin-longboat and have big party with lots of beer and contests......like tossing timber!
Then some sacrifices to Tor, Oden, Frej, Loke (eve the bad ones must have something!).

And a big runestone made for my siblings to remember the pain in the ass I once were when walking the earth!

No, that time is long gone

It would be great though

When my dad died last march, we had a ceremony in the church where the priest spoke briefly about him from what we'd told. There were a ton of people there, old school friends, people who knew my dad when he was a kid, colleagues from work etc. After the ceremnoy, everyone went to my parents house, and we sat there, talking, eating, singing songs, telling stupid stories about him. When it was over, I felt...I dunno, shriven. Like I'd managed to say goodbye to him in a good way.

The funeral is not for the deceased, it's a chance for those left behind to say goodbye.

Funerals in my family are generally a lot of fun. The funeral itself isn't, but all in all I have fond memories of them. I've got an odd family :)

For me it's cremation and burial at sea, no ceremony, no markers, no nothing. Just dump me in the nearest body of saltwater.

Whatever is cheapest. Pine box in a backyard, and keep collecting the Social Security for as long as possible, for all I care.

I just want a big rockin party afterwards.

Maybe the "Yay, Vannoth's Dead" Fan Faire? :P

I personally do not want any tiny piece of any religion to be involved with my death. More because I have friends of a multitude of beliefs and I know how uncomfortable that is to be preached at, during a loved one's funeral while you have your own beliefs which differ. I love my friends and family enough not to use my death as a damn chance to preach at them.

Second, I don't want a bunch of people to sit around and cry that I died. I want what would almost be considered a party. I want people to remember and laugh, and enjoy themselves...and leave, not sad that I died, but happy of the time we shared.

Third, I would prefer to be buried somewhere, not in cement vaults and giant caskets that will never decay. I would prefer to give myself back to the earth...though I don't have any particular spot picked yet. If that is not an option, then I would guess I would prefer to be cremated and my ashes scattered somewhere.

Last, I would probably be pretty elaborate in planning to leave things for my loved ones. Noone would have a lawyer show up at their door with a box, or a letter. It would be more personal than that...

Let me be the first to say that is a pretty fucked-up way to look at it.

I'm never going to die. As long as I remember to keep my heart beating, I won't die. Seriously my friends and I have thought about this long and hard, and we figure that as long as we remind eachother to keep our hearts beating, we're going to live forever.

*shrug* if you say so. But I say it's fucked up to go to a funeral of someone you love, to have some guy in robes (whom you've never met, and may not have ever met your now departed loved one) preaching the gospel of soandso about how this death proves to us we have precious little time and we must save our souls before it is too late...after all that's what your loved one would want right?

Shit like that will nearly push me to walking out...the only reason I can't is respect of the person who has died.

Well I have never been to funeral where the minister starts to actually preach to the attendees. That's pretty fucked up. They should very well know that the people there are friends/family, and aquantances. People for many different walks of life. No way is that the proper place/time for a sermon. I wouldn't blame the religion...just the person leading the service.

Come to an Alabama Church of Christ funeral then, I almost fucking chewed my old church's preacher out for doing that at my grandmothers...thats part of the reason I don't go to church anymore.

Actually I've allready let me family know about it, and if my corpse is going to a science lab, I don't have to worry about the cost of a casket or a burial.

Die mysteriously leaving a finger or something to identify you but not your whole corpse. Keep people wondering if your are still alive. Dress like Elvis.

I'm going to donate some money in my will into an after-funeral party, that way people won't be depressed when I die (some will even look forward to it).

Well since I can't avoid dying, and even if I could I'd have to figure out how to avoid old age....because at 29 I can already feel time taking it's toll on my body....I've thought about this some.

I'm going for cremation. There just isn't enough space for me to take up a 4x8 ft plot permanently. And if there was..still why would I want to sit there and rot slowly over time? When your dead your dead...do I need a F'ing silk pillow? I'm F'ing dead stupid mother fucker. Save your cash.

I mean even if I was religious it's not like my beleifs would say I might get back up and the preservatives injected in my veins will help me, even if they did help...I can't run on that, I'd need blood stupid. And no religion I've heard of believes you feel pain after death.

So unless I die via some special circumstance (perfect health, then dead...or obvious murder) I'm going cremation. If the special circumstance is met, I'm going to get myself preserved to get the faggot that killed me after I'm gone....forensic science = good. They can't do much with ashes.

I mean seriously.....does it make you feel better knowing your parents or grandparents or uncle is rotting slowly only 3 miles away under the dirt? Hell that creeps me out more then cremation.

As for the funeral....I don't care what they do. This is about my relatives saying goodbye. It's about them feeling comfortable about the fact I am gone. I don't think beer and pizza will do the trick, but if they want to do it that way, go for it. I like beer and pizza. But if they want to do it in a religious way or just a little more somber then a keg party with a live rock band....that's cool too.

More then likely it will be a traditional affair, because that's what most people are used to and it won't upset too many people. Personally I'd like it just like real quick get together at the funaral parlor, just a picture of me, no urn, no casket....they can say goodbye...maybe go somewhere after that and remember me. But nothing big and formal.

I hate it when people feel sorry for me, even for little things.

So when I die, I want people to be happy I've gone to a better (although probably gonna end up goin to a worse) place.

So there better be cake&pie and ice cream.

And Dave Matthews Band playing ? perhaps...perhaps...perrrrrrhappssss

yea, but i dunno, im only 17, im not s'pose to think of this shit until I'm old enough to die naturally....well least naturally with a normal natural death or something, i dunno you get the point

*edit* bleh, i cant say "cake" and "pie" anymore

Ideally.....when I die I want my friends to take my corpse out partying, ala Weekend at Bernie's, for a weekend or so.

Then to be cremated so I don't 'accidently' wake up underground :P

As for the wake, being Irish there is only one option, all must get drunk or 'blocked' as we say and then have a huge orgy, that should take their minds off the sadness.

Assuming they would be sad of course :P

I'd like to be placed in a Photon torpedo and shot out of a Photon torpedo tube with a full military ceremony ala Spock in whatever Star Trek movie rerun was on the other night. I believe he was shot at an uninhabited planet, and that he eventually came back to life.

I don't even really like Star Trek, but that seems ideal. Hi Shaerra.
