1. 3 hours away from Bend, where my folks live(which is 10 min from MT Bachelor)

2. I get to hang with my brother...he is too fucking cool

I have a few headhunters(recruiters) on the fires, but I ain't moving till I have something going...I been unemployed before and it is a bitch.

EDIT: Originally, I wanted to go to Raleigh/Durham, NC. Maybe someday I will go there, but you really can't beat cheap rent during a transition....an I have no friends in NC, that I can think of.

Like someone already said, Oregon is ultra-liberal. The ratio of conservatives to liberals is actually probably higher in CA. Oregonians pay a stupid amount of taxes and have tons of leftish social programs most states lack. It's also a very wealthy state though so you don't see it as much.

Right now I am spending the summer outside of NYC (a place where you can't pump your own gas goddamnit). But I leave in a few weeks to go back to UNC. So I would have been pretty close to R/D. And yes the rent owns.

Admittedly, outside of the metro areas CA was very cool, you never run out of things to do. Unfortunately there's 5,000,000 rude, inconsiderate assholes right there with you. Hey, congrats on the nice looking prospect. I have a friend or two in Portland, I think, that I may have to visit soon.

Excuse me for being stupid but what do you mena by can't pump your own gas. Is it a law or something there? I live in Wisconsin and if you want people to pump gas for you then it adds $.50 per gallon IF you can even find a place. I haven't personally seen a full serve gas station in years.

It was just Oregon and Jersey. Once Oregon goes, it's only NJ that will be full serv only. Ohh, and we still pay less for gallon full serve than nearly every other state that's self serve. I'd rather stay in my car personally, but then LA never seen the winter like we had this past year. I guess it's no biggie getting out of your car out there.

Uhh...have you lived in CA anywhere elese other than LA? I live in LA too, and I fucking hate it. I moved down here from the SF bay area, which is better in every respect other than the job market & cost of living. I got married, and due to my wife's job status (on a 3-year contract) and immigration status, I had to suck it in, and move down to this deathpit.

Oh and as saying good bye to tree-hugging hippies, boy you are in for a nice surprise!! Portland has more of those than any other town I have been in! Even more than SF! You can't swing a dead cat without hitting one!

The pumping gas thing is a little strange, but it ain't going to break my balls to have a pump-monkey fill the truck up with U-Lead. Also, the cost of living index is about 30% lower, according to what I read.

Yeah, I lived in Newport Beach for 3 years and Santa Barbara for 8... nice towns, but everything is crazy expensive.

As far as the hippie thing...yeah, I know OR is not my 'ideal' environment, but a cardboard box in Tijuana is better than LA. And I really don't hate liberals, I just hate so many things about this state that I threw them in to the mix for the hell of it...heh

The places where you cant pump your own gas is Oregon, Jersey, and the 5 boroughs of NYC (Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Harlem). I hate it, because you can't just say 'fill it up' with out getting a fucked up look. Its nowhere near as faster, but it is nice when the attendant cleans your windows for you, but that makes me inclined to tip him, when I can do it for free.

Heh, firstly, LA is not California, that is like saying Miami is Florida.
You could not PAY me to live in portland, or anywhere in oregon, been there, done that, ran away screaming and waving my hands like a loon. GL bud, hope you don't find 99.999% of the population as vapid as I did.

I love some parts of California, but I hate LA, and I hate that everyone I meet in Montreal assumes that being from California = being from LA. Fuck LA, it's one of the worst cities anywhere.

There are actually plenty of places in California that are conservative, love hunting and going to church (not to oversimplify, not trying to offend), etc, they're just hotter than hell and have fairly small populations. My mom lives in a town like that (though she doesn't fit in!), and it's pretty eye-opening to spend time there, especially since the rest of the time I spend in CA these days is either in Berkeley or Santa Cruz. I wouldn't want to live there, but it is good to realize just how different much of CA is from the large cities/coastal areas.

You hate LA almost as much as I hated Stamford, CT.

I've lived in a lot of places, that place is the only one I truly hated.

My favorite spots are
Burlington, KY (near Cinci Airport)
Alpharetta,GA (NE of Atlanta)
Bloomfield, MI (N of Detroit)

Although I wouldn't recommend Burlington to anyone, it's something you have to experience first and decide you like it. It's kinda...how do I say it politely? It's still in Kentucky. Cost of living is cheap, you can go to cinci for stuff in 15 mins, or you can be in the middle of nowhere in 5 minutes.

Atlanta is sunny, people are nice for the most part. Property isn't too bad, and atlanta is a big city. Alpharetta was a nice suburb....buckhead was a nice spot to party if your into clubs.

Bloomfield, MI is nice because you have sun in the summer but not too hot, everyone has a boat because there is a lake every 3 feet, and you can have winter sports in the snow althuogh they don't have mountains you can cross country, or ride a snowmobile, or ice boat etc...cost of living is high. People are neighborly, but not to strangers...IE not on the road.

Well not all California is bad. I was born and raised in the San Diego area. Moved to Seattle for 4 years, moved to Sacramento for 2 and then back here to San Diego.

Honestly, I love San Diego. LA is a different story but at least I have nice weather.

the logic behind it is if everyone pays a 1 cent more per gallon for gas, service stations can afford to hire full time pump attendants creating 10's of thousands of jobs across the state.

The whole purpose behind the full service stations is to create more jobs. It would be a huge hit on unemployment if they went to self serve.

Actually the people in NYC/NJ are very nice and helpful. I found that living here does, for me at least, squash the bad reputation that they have. But, the Stanley Cup Finals didn't help matters much. Driving in NYC/NJ, however, is a totally different subject.

I don't disagree with you at all, I was very surpised the first couple times I went to NYC, the people are fantastic. It definately didn't fit the image I'd always had of NYC before going there a few times. I still wouldn't live there though.

We had to stay in uniform once when a ship I was stationed on went there, you couldn't buy a meal or a drink anywhere in the city.

The ones that migrate to Miami are by and large assholes though. That's a generalization, but after a whole bunch of business trips down there, it's justified.

OR is definitely the most liberal and "hippie" place I've been to in the US, and I've been just about everywhere.

I remember Oregon as being great wilderness type state. I took a whitewater rafting trip down Deshutes/Snake rivers. Very scenic.

I also stayed at the Sun River resort which I recall being a nice time although I was pretty young on that trip.

Oregon is due for a major invasion of assholes now that the word is out that it's a decent state!
