Modem Question

We're running two computers and the only things the two have in common are the dialup ISP, the modems, (US Robotics 56k Performance Pro Faxmodems) Running windows 98SE and directx 9.0
While using the internet, whether it's surfing pages, using AIM, or playing EQ, we run into a problem where the connection seems to just die. The computers say we're still connected, and if you pick up the phone there's still modem communication noise there. Trying to go to a new webpage will just say the server cannot be found. We'll eventually lose our connection with AIM or EQ or whatever we're doing and have to disconnect from the current connection and redial. After redialing everything will be fine for anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours at which point the problem will happen again.
We've tried two different ISPs, neither worked any better than the other.
Any help is appreciated. As of now I'm leaning toward directX being the problem, we've played with most of the modem settings already.
