Apparently registration servers were having hardware failures and database problems yesterday as well as servers going up and down quite a bit.
You think that they'd learn after 4 + years in the biz.

launch day on message boards =)
(Didn't buy btw. just reading up on it.)

many critics are calling this the worst launch of a online rpg, ever

From what I've been reading of some of the "features", this seems to be a carbon copy of AO without the PvP element.
I hope this gets hammered in reviews.

The launch was worse than UO!? Holy shit, I remember not being to get on the Lake Superior server AT ALL for DAYS. The jury is still somewhat out on this one for me, but atm, I have no desire to even touch SWG.

Spot on review.
SWG is a total fuck-up so far. A lesser man would say "I told you so".

You know. I just got back from vacation. I was gone one week. When I left, they had just P-Wiped my beta server. There was no one even thinking about a release. Nothing at all was finished. Shit, the Bio-Engineer profession is STILL broken. Yes, a WHOLE profession. But it's okay, release wont be for another 2 months or so... Yeah RIGHT. 3 days later, they announce release is about 3 days away. Sigh... SOE Fails again. But yet again, faggots CONTINUE to pay for broken content, and terrible gameplay, because it looks cool on the box. Or else it's named after something that is so awesome in its own rights.
Sigh...

I feel bad for Koster right now. I think his days at SOE and maybe even the game industry are numbered after this turd of a game, and it's not really his fault. It's easy to say in retrospect, but I can see now that the whole game was doomed from the start to fail. Verant/SOE should have done the smart thing and pretty much cloned EQ with gameplay improvments and put it in the star wars world. I would have played it happily on a PVP server, but instead they made a huge overly complex and over-designed MMORPG that tries as hard as it can to appeal to every type of MMORPG gamers (the power gamers that like to fight, the trade skillers, the roleplayers, the PK's, the stat junkies), and instead its too confusing to appeal to anyone.
Unlike most MMORPG at launch they seem to have spent too much time sweating the small stuff while losing sight of the main scope of the game. It should be the other way around in my opinion. SWG is pretty much a game that was designed by a committee instead by a person who had an overall vision (I hate to use that overused word but it fits).
A better idea would have been to make a more simplistic game and then add more to it as it matures.
I'm not an expert on SWG, I only played it for the last couple weeks before beta ended, but I wasn't that impressed. The 3D engine is nice, but like all other SOE games, the models mostly suck (especially for the NPC's.. the stormtroopers look utterly ridiculous. come on sony splurge a little for some fucking professional modellers). Player models are nice but I wasn't too impressed with the others. The way your avatar interacts with the world feels slippery and fake and not at all fluid like EQ is (even AO and DAOC got this wrong though). There's too many options and too many things to do but so much isnt there or implemented poorly it will take weeks for the non beta players to know where to start and by that time new things will be going in shit will be changing around.
I think Star Wars Galaxies will be an excellent game a year from now, which is around when I plan on buying it if I ever bother buying it at all. WoW will probably be out by then and it looks a little less complex and annoying than SWG and will probably take up most of the time I reserve for playing video games.
I think Koster is a great game designer but I do not think he is the best lead designer. I know he likes to sweat details a lot and that he is a whore for trade skills so he probably would have made an excellent co-producer. I think LucasArts pushed him around a lot too and made them put in things they wanted to see in their liscensed game. It's just not a good way to design a game. Also if they focussed more on making a fun and simple game with lots of content like EQ was, the fucking thing would have probably been out a year ago and making money instead of sitting in the studio while some turdhat tweaked the barley milling or glass polishing trade skills.

That was a really good review. It put everything everyone has been saying after Beta's NDA fell into a well written article. It sure as hell went over every complaint I had... I sooo hope that this fails miserably, after they made me pay the fucking 10 dollars for the fucking beta CD.. the nerve.

SWG is more tradeskill oriented.
AO is combat oriented, like EQ.
About the only similarity (besides the sci fi setting) is that they were both released a few months too early.

The negative reaction to the release will pale in comparison to the negative reaction once people are actually playing the game.

You'd think people would learn to stop paying SOE to beta their crap after 4+ years. Guess not!
