Been looking for a kickass mp3 player. How does iPOD rate with the others? Also, how much are these things going for these days?

As a Mac and PC user, I liked the iPod design, but for the same price I can get better. I'm not knocking the iPod itself, mind you. I ended up with an Archos model jukebox a few years back that was considerably cheaper.

The advantage the iPod has is the firewire connection for fast file transfers. My current mp3 player has USB only and swapping out 6 gigs of music can take quite a while.

Overall, from the folks I know who have iPods, I hear no complaints.

iPod has no 'off' button, that's the biggest complaint I've heard (well, besides the price)...

The new Mac designs are sort of a pita as well. There's no power button on the keyboard and no eject button on the front of the case...the eject is on the keyboard where the power button used to be...wtf!

Best thing I can say is if you have an Apple Store near you, go check one out there. Or bribe a buddy and borrow his/her iPod for a day.

I have had my Creative Nomad Jukebox since the 6gig version first came out (at least 2 years), and I have always enjoyed it. I would assume that the newer ones would support USB 2.0, which is supposed to be as fast or faster than firewire. I don't know a whole lot about the iPod though, and whether it has a richer featureset than the others, but I hate Apple so I usually steer clear of their products anyway.

im not a fan of mac shit myself, that was the basis of my first hesitation

as far as features, nothing else ive seen is at the 10-30gig range(i saw some nomad shit that was)

just seems like the most capable/smallest massive mp3 player

what other options are there for the 10g+ mp3 players?

My friend got the 30gig iPod for free from Dell about a month ago. From what I've heard from him the sound quality is good, works well at d/ling. Never ran into a problem with running mp3s. Battery life is reasonable.

I myself just use my Rio 500 for rollerblading, sony mp3 deck for my car, and an audiotron for my home listening.

Archos makes a range of products for audio and video. Their Jukebox/Recorder series uses USB 2.0. I've haven't had any problems with the old 6GB jukebox that I have...besides the USB 1.0 transfer being a bit slow. 2.0 should fix that.
