Backlit Keyboards...

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but I really want one of these keyboards:

It's a backlit keyboard! Sorry, I just think that's cool and all. They have a couple others on their site, Eluminx. I saw like a whole bunch of other designs at E3, and they were pretty neat too. They only have like 3 of them on their site. I think I want to get a red backlit one so it matches my trackball's light. But for that I'll have to wait a few months. :/

I find that this would only distract me from precious eq... and if you need to look at the keyboard to type you are teh weak!

I thought it was cool...then I saw the price.

You think 85 bucks is too steep for a quality gizmo like this?

I like it, but there's no way I buy a keyboard without testing out the feel of the keys first.

I prefer laptop style keyboards that have a very soft/quiet touch.

More like $99.95 for what I saw...and yeah, I'm not going to pay that for an extra gimmick when I'm more than happy with my keyboards now.

if the keys are quiet and they reduced the price more to the 40-50$ range, ide buy it, just for the looks

Do you look at your keyboard?

I figured most EQ types to just think it and the keystrokes spill out onto the screen.

Personally I wouldn't mind the backlighting. I'm a touch typist but sometimes I glance down to find numbers and such on occassion. Would be nice then in the dark. But not $100 nice.

Well, if you are sitting in the dark in front of a CRT, don't worry about backlighting.

Very shortly yer gonna be fookin blind anyway.

Hmm, if you look to type, won't that back-light eventually like give you a headache?

I mean trying to read through that glowing stuff has to hurt after awhile.

Looks cool though, I considered it for a second until I thought about the heaaches.....

I still look when I type. I type fast, but without looking I get even more typo's...and I don't go back to correct. I'm not graded on my posts.

$100 is a bit much, if I could count on the quality I'd pay for it though....keyboards last longer then most of my computer equipment....so you can re-use it on several machines....I'm willing to pay more on parts I can re-use from machine to machine.

So like keyboards, cases, somewhat monitors, speakers and soundcards....even network cards...I'm willing to pay slight premiums on.

Video cards, CPU, MB, RAM....those things don't last anyway...I try and find cost effective part there....get the best bang for the buck. You toss it in 1-2 years anyway.

I read a review on one of these and the negative comment was that dark spots on all of the keys made them difficult to read.

bah, lights are bad, a nice soft quiet touch is all that matters in a keyboard, also not having sticky keys helps too

know what would be the fuckin own?

2 words : Gel Keys

Right now my main computers keyboard is black, and I have my office in the basement so there aren't many windows (the opposite side is a walk out, so there are some)

That black keyboard is so hard to read if I have the lights off...and I like the lights off because the lighting down here is like 8 flood lights...and then you get 4 machines running, and a mini-fridge...and weak ventilation...and it gets hot down here fast.

That's why an illuminated keyboard peaked my interest temporarily.

I guess I should just buy a white keyboard or a desk lamp heh.

------------------------
I think gel keys would be hard to implment because they would be harder to press. They might also wear funny with the usage a keyboard generally sees.

At least a decent desk lamp, Pils.

Unless youa re using LCD panel dsiplays, you are going to completley fuck your eyes up like that. CRT screens are bad for eyesight to start with.

I have one dispatcher fighting black spots in her eyesight already from sitting in the dark in front of a CRT too much.

I sit in the (mostly) dark with my 2 flat panels! Then again, I also have a little USB powered light I use for my keyboard from time to time.

Yeah, it sucks when the keys actually have the letters imprinted on them
:( that could cause vision problems

I dont look at the keyboard, and it would throw off the 'i stayed up all night and the only light in the entire room all night was my monitor' feeling I'm use to.

Every review of those keyboards mentions the high pitch whine that the power inverter for the EL makes. I guess I'll wait for them to fix this before I shell out for one. :?

now THAT would be annoying...almost like my second box I always have to open up to work on something....hearin the fans gets real annoying. It's only worse when the comp is off and you realize how much noise the littlest things actually make.

Overall, I think they're a cool concept, and maybe they will become more "mainstream" once other companies are able to produce them as well forcing upgrades. (as if that really happens)
