I just started getting into this band and am really liking their stuff. I only have one album so far (Moon to Antarctica), but I will probably get more! :P This album seems like a great mixture of all sorts of styles to me. This is the only thing vaguely close to emo I've ever been able to tolerate.

I listened to a mix of tracks at a co-worker's request, and I couldn't really get into them. They almost reminded me of a Garage Band version of Cracker.

they're decent. my band's guitarrist pretends he's this indie rock kid and raves about em, but they're nothin special to me.

how can you compare them to emo or cracker? they are not even remotely emo and sound nothing like cracker.

dashboard confessional is emo - modest mouse is not....

I have to disagree..

Dashboard is a good accoustic band.

But let's not get into an argument about personal tastes ;)

I only compared them to Cracker based on the few songs I heard, and the comparisons were made to the OLD Cracker tunes rather than the newer (i.e. Kerosene Hat) albums.

I don't know, but there was just something about them that I could not explain that kept me from listening to them again. The person that suggested I listen in the first place did say that I picked some of her least favorite songs in the first place.

I didn't like them either the first time i heard anything, but I also didn't hear the right songs. Thankfully I hung out with my friend enough and he played the music enough. Now the few songs that I first heard and didn't like I count amoung the ones I do like. I think that happens a lot.
they are not even remotely emo
I think they very much have a lot of influence from emo. More so then any other vague genre of music. Dunno about Cracker though....if it is the same band I am thinking of then I don't see any connection. But I only heard one song.

One of the few older songs by cracker that people remember is "Take the skinheads bowling" and that song is NOT what I was comparing Modest Mouse to, hehe

I guess I am referring more to "their" days as Camper van Beethoven. Here was the best quote to basically show what I was referring to:

Cracker concentrates on rock and country, creating a twisted, rootsy rock & roll that sounds like a post-punk Rolling Stones or Little Feat. While their self-titled 1992 debut had moments of raw brilliance, Cracker's second album, 1993's Kerosene Hat, fulfilled their promise. Powered by the hit single "Low," the album was a hard-rocking meeting of traditional rock and post-punk sensibilities. Like Camper Van Beethoven's albums, it deserved to be heard by a wide audience; this time Lowery found a larger audience -- Kerosene Hat eventually went gold.

I thought that "Take the Skinheads Bowling" was the Dead Milkmen?

i guess i could agree with the country/rock thing... some of their songs have that vibe. i think ugly cassanova (Isaac Brock's solo project) has a lot more country feel than modest mouse though. Regardless, you should give them more of a chance. Two years ago when I first heard them, I hated them. After about a month or two of a good friend pestering me to give it a closer listen, they turned into one of my favorite bands.

They are on tour by the way. They got a new drummer and are apparantly working on a new album. I'm gonna check out their shows in Houston and in Austin.

p.s. I still have to disagree with the emo thing, when I think Emo I think Elliot, Dashboard Confessional, Dismemberment Plan, Further Seems Forever and all those other whiny bands. I couldn't really put Modest Mouse in a genre, but emo is definately not it....
