anyone here do any martial arts/ or have had good experiances with them?
I remember when i was a little kid i took some tae kwan do, and that class didnt teach you bullshit, or maybe it was just my luck having the instructor have you kick a bag in the same style for an hour, always been a big fan though

been looking up some martial arts and found a place near by that teaches hapkido, which is one of my favorites after some reaserch, anyone have any comments/experiances with hapkido or other martial arts? looking up shaolin (but i cant find any) and aikido as well

A big part of martial arts is doing something 'so many times it comes natural'. Also OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of forms teach you other 'things' by teaching you simple, apparently boring things. Then later show you how to apply those in other ways.

Iga-Ryu Ninjutsu.

I was very lucky to even be allowed to formally train in the art, being as I am Caucassian and the school is not very pro-Gaijen.
However my Jonin (Sensei) was impressed by me (for what reason even I cannot guess at).

Iga-Ryu is not a fighting art per se. IMO it is a survival art, as it teaches you stealth, kill spots, ambush and anti-ambush techniques. It also teaches you 'how' to be familiar with nature (aka not to disturb the enviorns). Lots of body and mind strengthening techniques, if that sort of thing appeals to you (personally I broke my fingers only god knows how many times thrusting them into barrels of pebbles, on the plus I really do not experience break pains in that area anymore).
As for actual combat, it is very movement oriented. Lots of grappeling, strikes (flat palm in most instances), kicks and holds.
My favoriate aspect of it is how they teach you to manipulate your Ki to apply it to movement, clouding, fist or foot.
Well that, and learning how to make a lot of 20 second or less poisons from common items was fun too ;)
If you can get into it, I strongly recommend it. It was a life changing event for me.

LOL, I saw the previews for the movie, cannot say I have seen it, but wanted to.

Well, there is strong training examples from Ninjutsu that are applied, I am told, in the military, specifically by Sniper and Commando types, due mainly to the weapons training (I cannot believe I forgot that :( Put that above, the weapon training fucking owns all ), versitlity and of course, stealth.

Jonin did not accept payment to teach (In fact he was slightly offended by the concept when I asked him how much the classes would cost). Paying for it is really an "americanized concept".

I used to do Jiu Jitsu until I fucked up my back. Loved it. We had the most psychotic bunch of ppl I had ever met.

I have a friend that's in Iaido(same one that got me into Jiu-Jitsu incidentally) and I'm seriously considering taking that up.

Avoid sensei who refer to it as "Martian Arts."

Anything that ends in "-kido" is prolly badass, where as the "-kwon-do"s are usually pretty ghey.

If you take kung-fu, DO NOT ask about the iron palm training. It requires you to abstain from spanking it for like 3 months!

Actually, that is pretty good bro :D

Consequently, it was one of the highest honors in my life to have Jonin welcome me with open arms. It was interesting, as practically all the other students wanted me gone, so they started to insult me.
After they saw I was there to stay, they kept insulting me but in a more "I am just joking with you" fashion. Was okay really, them being the Midget Bridage and all ;)

If you think a couple of pokes making fun of you = "riding you", you might want to find another board.

Basically martial arts is made of 3 parts...

1. Grappling - wrestling, cokes, throws, holds..some is cool most is boring.

2. Kicks - fancy, slow

3 Punches - average to see in a bar

You want to pick a style that has the best combo for you.

I took Tae Kwon Do and Karate (shorin Ryu style) and Karate would be more likely to see real use....but Tae Kwon Do would impress people more if they saw me practice. I wanted to do Akido but unfortunately I opted out due to my neck injury and the coke hods etv..

Some people are saying Jitsu VS do...that's incorrect, they have nothign to do with the "cool factor" one of those terms means "way of life" and the other means "the technique only" or so said my Eastern Philosopy teacher in college.

We don't do the "way of life" thing here only technique in the states...so whatever it says means nothing....it's just a name.

Most Teavhers will teach stuff that isn't in your actual style...like my Tae Kwon Do teacher taught me some throws and grabs....my Kartae teacher taught me some extra kicks and such...

So my suggestion is to find an "open minded" teacher...,,but stick with something you want to focus on like grappling or punching or kicks.....what did you want to docus on?

If you rent UFC (ultimate fighting Championship) You will notice the winner was usually a grappler, but it was a long boring fight. On the bright side they could do very little permant damage and still suvdue the opponent if they want...

I'm of the mindset where you avoid figts at all costs....because noone wins a fight..I mean even if you devestate them and don;t take a hit....you will take a hit in court. Any ignorant asshole who starts a fight is enough of an asshole to sue you if he loses.

Luckily the benefits of martial arts extend far beyond fighting...balance, coordination, endurance, strength, speed, self-confidence, flexibility....

Grappling is teh win in a bar fight. I enjoy taking someone down to the ground and choking them unconscious while his buddy punches me in the back of the head.

Grappling = Groovy if you are a large fellow and in 1v1 combat.
Anything else > Grappling if you are small framed or in 1vmany combat

On a side note.. Running>Gun>Martial Arts if there are more than 3 of them.

I took Tae Kwon Do in college. It was ok to work up a sweat but I wouldn't call it a defensive art unless you got lucky. It is also very americanized in that you buy all your new belts. You don't have to earn much with the teachers I was with. That really killed it for me.

A few years ago I was in an excellent Japanese Jiu-Jitsu class. It was very traditional and the forms all taught you something. The stuff was very useful in breaking out of holds and using pressure points and holds to control opponents. Very cool stuff. If I could find a teacher then I would take it again in a heart beat. All they have in my town is Tae Kwon Do though and I don't feel like sparring the little kiddies with black belts.

Xzion,

If you don't enjoy repetitive activity when training I would recommend you look for the more "americanized" classes. Probably something that emphasizes self defense.
Most good martial arts schools will be very monotonous for an extended period of time. The reason they are boring is because your instructor thinks your form is teh suk. Until you get it right... or bore him to death.. you won't move on. Good instructors have a lot of patience.

aye hapkido seems to be a good mix, a lot of grappling, pressur points trips, takedowns etc and a lot of actual combat moves as well, where as there is little combat in aikdo and all bullshit combat in karate and tae kwan do, the instructor i talked to was into martial arts for 40 years and found that after judo and aiko hapkido was his favorite and most potent...and in mortal kombat deadly alliance scorpion uses hapkido and hes a badass!!!
