Howdy folks,

I have been looking for guitar tablature for certain bands that aren't listed on any regular sites. I figure there are some newsgroups out there covering that but I have no clue how to set this up. Is there an easy way to go about this and if so, how do I do it? Then, once there, how do I find a specific topic?

Many thanks ;)

Canno

Download Forte Agent, and set it up... then just search the group listings for guitar or tab or whatever... Agent is by far the best program I've found for Newsgroups, and it's free. I've been using it since like... uh, 1996 or something obscene.

Not quite what I was looking for. Unfortunately, regular websites don't have a whole lot in the way of punk/hardcore shit, hence, the need for newsgroups for what I am looking for. I figure Usenet would be a good avenue, but I know jack shit about that...

There are a few tabs on www type sites, but not the ones I want...yes, I am lazy and like my tabs fed to me as opposed to working on my pitch ;) Thanks for all then input!! :)

Well the free one is Free Agent. If you've been using it that long, perhaps you can register it for only $25! Well, $25 when I registered it. Was sometime in 95. Early Agent user. Haven't used anything else since. It's $29 these days. But yeah, give Free Agent a spin.

Anyway, alt.guitar.tab is what you want. May be others but I didn't look.

Post a request to any of the guitar tabliture news groups ... unless the songs are really obscure, someone will probably get around to tabbing them out for you (It helps if you can provide links to mp3s of the songs you want).

http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/tab.html and http://www.olga.net are both excellent resources, but they tend to have mostly mainstream music. For the lesser known stuff, you're pretty much stuck doing it yourself or finding someone else to do it for you.

The only thing I'm not sure of is if Free Agent support yEnc. Not really necessary unless you frequent the binary newsgroups though I guess.

If you download files from newsgroups, there really is no other choice but Binary News Reaper 2 if you want the best.

I used Agent (free for me : ) up until BNR2 though. The difference is that you can open up multiple feeds to your newsgroups. For example, with Cox Cable, I have 4 feeds at 300kb/sec connected to 3 different news servers..Cox East, Central and West. This gets me about 1 gig an hour download speed which isn't quite enough to keep up with kyoukan's beastiality .mpeg requests but does allow me to grab entire CDs and movies in about 35-40 minutes.

If you just read text messages then Free Agent is great.

BNR2:

It's free!

Don't forget to d/l the QT files needed on the download page if you try it out.

"Multiple News Servers
Agent 2.0 will support two techniques for accessing multiple news servers. The first technique allows users to connect to multiple independent servers. For example, the user can access both a public Usenet server from their ISP and several private corporate servers. The other technique allows users to improve the quality of a newsfeed by using a secondary server to fill in messages that are missing from a primary server. This is a key feature for groups that contain large binaries. "

Agent 2.0 isn't out yet. But that's one of the things that will be in it.

I'll believe it when I see it! New Versions of Agent are slower in coming than Blizzard software! It also depends on how well it is implemented. BNR2 has been doing it for a long time with frequent update support.

The best newsreader is Galaxy. I'll be fucked if I can remember what its called now, but since the company that owned it went out of bidness one of the developers has been updating it and releasing it for free.

If I can remember the name I'll post a link but I'm posting this in case maybe someone else knows.
