Okay, I know this community or at least parts of it have been around...Oh quite a while...I guess 3 years at the very least Playing Everquest. I would kind of like to know what is it that keeps you guys playing this one game for so long....
I know that FoH in particular has been around since the at least the very first day the servers went up...

Okay, so far two people have said this...
I'm not trying to argue, but I would like a little more information.

Sorry I'm a little curious...
If it were only the people, wouldn't a forum like this be enough, and cheaper?

Why do you all play Everquest as opposed to AC, or Ultima whatever...?
-=Lohrno
EDIT: Oh yes, and BTW, why have you all not moved on. What is it that about Everquest that keeps you all there?

the playing environment, you never know whats gonna happen. Is your guild gonna win this new event? Will you survive this tough pull? Will so and so guild steamroll/ks/train you? Will you get back at them? And you'll never know who you'll meet in the next group.

I agree. I also like the ability to pick where you want to go, what you want to do, if you want to solo you can solo. Or farm gimpy mobs for fun, help others, spend countless hours doing broken quests. The freedom to pick anything and do it is great. Well, except talking logic to GMs, that works as well as teaching a dog to eat with a spoon.

The people. I hate to raid, I hate to grind exp.
I play to enjoy the people around me.

yeah, that's partly it.. I've just spent so much time on it lately that I'm getting really burned out.. But all my friends play, so when I call them to go out or do something, it's always "no, log in, come help me twink Fucking_Gimp_08" or "I need N for my epic, come help get it."
It gets old.

My favorite aspect? All the fucking beggars that surround me when I'm in bazaar and ask me for something.
No.. I would agree that friends are the only reason I play. Sometimes I get on an a l00t whoring kick, but the majority of time, I just use it as a big chat room.

I think there are two contributing factors to why people still play Everquest.
The first reason is absolutely the people. Fan Faire proves that if nothing else. 70 people showed up from differing guilds all at differing levels of experience and uberness, but in RL, everyone partied together, everyone was treated equally, and everyone had fun together. Basically if your nametag said Veeshan, you were among friends.
As an example, I met people like Drolgin who I've known for 4 years but would never have met if not for Everquest. He travelled practically halfway around the world to hang out with all the people he's known over the years. The main commonality we've shared over the years is Everquest, but we've become good friends even though he lives in Denmark, and I live in California. It's the same for so many other people. Everquest is what brings us together, and what keeps us in touch. SOE isn't blind to this and they clearly have it in their minds with every aspect of EQ, and all of the future products that will be coming out.
The second reason is that by FAR, EQ is the best MMORPG going right now. I'm a veteran of DAoC, AO, and UO, and though there are aspects of each of the games that I like a lot, EQ blows them all away. You would only have to spend 5 minutes talking with Scott Hartsman, or really any of the devs, and you'd see that not only do they care about selling the game and making money (isn't that what you go into business for in the first place), but far above that is their desire to make the gaming experience the best that can possibly be made for each of the individuals that play the game. Why was Saiphos so popular? He genuinely cared about the players on his server.
After what I saw at FF, I can tell you that this attitude permeates SOE, and appears to be present in the thinking of the Devs for not only EQ, but also EQ2, Planetside, and SWG. I'm looking forward to each of those excellent products as they come down the pipe, and I hope to see more people at any of the Fan Faires I end up at in the future.

there's so many different things one can do in this game.
for me, i can never get bored, there is always something different i can do to maintain the fun...exp, raids, quests, tradeskills, salesman, etc...
that fact and the people. the people are what make this game what it is today. without the people, this would just be another RPG.

The people, and the challenge and frustration you get over a new encounter you take pains to beat.

setting personal goals and meeting them hella quick.
Level 57 - 5 days
Level 58 - 5 days
Level 59 - 5 days
Went from level 57 to 60 in 15 days time...it was wow (NOTE THIS IS PRE-PoP and before 59 got smoothed out!)
Lets just say I had a pretty linear spring break that year...actually about a year ago I turned 60...in a week I think.

Dungeon Crawls. Hastn't been a good one since the CT revamp and that was just a new coat of paint on a classic car imo.

I dunno, the cyber tells from Aranuil my first Fire Giant raid 2... or was it 3 years ago? Swedes teaching me how to cuss and say vulgar things in their language was always fun. Watching Truant die to enrage. Oh wait, yeah I guess you could just go with what others said... The people.

I would say the People.
And... I really get a kick out of some guild leaders who get on this major power trip and try to belittle you and make you put up or shut up.It's rather amusing to see a person get off on the shit.

I liked talking dirty to manginas and steamrolling people. I also loved being completely naked while playing and letting others in on the secret in /gu.

The fact that I don't play anymore.
As bitter as I was about the CT breakup, it appears I was actually done a favor. I am going to school to finish my BS degree, I am spending more time reading books again, and I play DAOC....but only when I feel like playing, and not because there wouldn't be any other enchanters at raid_02 if I didn't show up.
I do miss my friends though, and hope maybe we can meet again someday in another realm or storyline.

Hands down it is the people. I've built some hard core friendships from this game that have transgressed to real life. Friends that I continue seeing myself have even when this game is long passed.

IRL I'm fat and ugly but in EQ I play a cute dark elf that I can look at in 3rd person when nothing else is going on.
Oh, and it's fun to jump in EQ. I could hit the space bar all day long and be entertained. The only thing missing in EQ is /apache
-----
The social part of EQ is what keeps me here along with it being a fun game.

That's definately the best part of Veeshan. Probably due to the great community that has spread up on these boards

1. The people - Guilds change, people leave for other guilds or people quit EQ entirely, but there's always your /friends list and sometimes they even return from the grave. Recently I've been re-connecting and even grouping with friends I met 2 years ago.
2. Guild Growth and Pride - I love seeing my guild grow and evolve. I have pride in knowing that KoE is recognized as being an honorable guild and that we strive to better ourselves and work toward being more ub3r while still being a relaxed guild.
3. Quests, quests, quests - Main reason why after almost 3 years I'm still only level 54. I believe in doing quest as they should be done, at your level, not when the mobs are green, but rather when they are still dark blue.
4. Tradeskills - 2nd reason why I'm still only 54. Maybe I'm a masacist, but I enjoy seeing "Wow I'm close to having 200 in every trade skill" rather than "Wow I'm an ub3r l33t level". Back in the UO days I was a master of all trade skills.
5. The Adventure - Thank god to SoE for cartography maps, going places I've never been too and not being TOTALLY fucking lost helps and makes you wanna go places you've never been or never see or only partially seen.
6. /Hugz
Everything else frankly doesn't matter, if I get better equiptment, sure great, if I get xp tonight, sure great, all of the above matters over everything else in my book.
