Nah, I mean are people going to start linking articles about whats going on in Iraq without offering any comment or opinion to stimulate a discussion?

Seriously, if people want a play-by-play, they can tune into a web broadcast or check cnn/reuters every 10-15 minutes.

It's been a given for the last 12 years that Saddam would set fire to his oil fields if we ever invaded. That's what he did during the original Gulf War, and it is a smart move on his part. He knows we're after his oil supply, and he knows our army will beat his. So why not take the whole country down with himself?

By setting fire to our future oil reserves, he knows that we'll have to spend countless years and billions of dollars just rebuilding the oil wells themselves. By the time we even get to the oil again, we'll have lost more money than the oil is worth.

Creating massive, murky oil fires also blankets the country with a smoke screen. The smoke screen effectively blocks laser guidance systems, fucks with satellite surveillance readings, and makes general reconnaissance a nightmare. It's as good a tactic as there is to help reduce the technological advantage we have over his men.

Depends how you define "smart." No, it's certainly not smart in the humanitarian sense; but then, it's already a given that Hussein couldn't care less about his people. It is, however, "smart" in the strategic sense of the word. It's pretty much the only thing a maniacal dictator about to have his country overrun can do.

Except that burning the wells doesn't accomplish much other than knocking down the derricks and equipment. His are falling apart anyway.

It's damn near impossible to make underground oil burn. Grats Saddam on another symbolic gesture and another ecological nightmare.

TAKEN FROM CNN
Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is "setting fire to his oil wells and it has no tactical advantage," he said. "The modern weapons that we have don't have to see the targets."

Guess it really isnt strategic either

To the contrary, many weapons the United States uses in Iraq DO require accurate visual and sensory guidance. There are newer generation, satellite-guided bombs in our arsenal -- but those are mostly the exception to the rule. The bulk of our weapons are the same as the ones we used back in 1991.

But the bottom line is that burning his oil fields will force us to spend millions to billions on cleanup. Whether we foot the ecological or economic bill on the decimated oil fields, we're going to be the ones spending time and money.

As I said before, it's the last-ditch effort of a madman on his way out of power. And from that perspective, it's strategically oriented.
