Should the games go on?

There has been a lot of discussion wether or not NCAA tournament should go on. Personally, I strongly feel that the games should go on. The soldiers in the gulf use sports as a distraction, when you hear them talk they WANT the games to go on and want to know who are playing/winning etc.

Another very strong argument for me: If you change your lifestyle too much due to terrorism/war the terrorists have won.

By letting the games go on you do NOT show disrespect to the soldiers or what they are fighting for. Locking yourself away in your home will NOT help any matter whatsoever.

Please, let the games go on. Do not stop living.

i think our economy has taken enough hits the last 2 years. cancelling revenue generating events doesnt really help anybody.

i'm fairly sure many of the troops in the middle east will be interested to catch a game or two should they have some down time.

CBS would certainly be up for the Darwin award if they pissed away that $1 billion contract they have for the NCAA tourney just to show the war.

Don't worry, I don't think ESPN 2 will cover the war.

Report was that some of the games were going to be broadcast on ESPN instead of TNN (at least I think it was TNN) if the war had started so they could cover it. I didn't catch the whole bit and am fuzzy about which station it was that was going to give up games on their network, but its broadcasters would still be doing the games....just showing them on ESPN instead. That is big dollars being given away and would actually be the right thing to do.

It would be stupid to not show the games. There's enough channels that can cover the war.

More would watch the war than the games. That is the issue that every sports showing channel save ESPN now faces.

but here is the deal:

Disney already has plenty of channels to show news on (ABC affiliates). They can have the whole spectrum of viewers if they have the games on ESPN.

The flipside is that Viacom needs to run their news on their flagship network, CBS. So they either have to put the sports on TNN (most people will be like wtf is that) or MTV (not regularly identified with sports).

If ESPN does pickup the games, they will still be produced by CBS Sports. The graphics and everything will still be CBS'. I'm not sure what sort of deal they are going to make on advertising, but i wouldnt be surprised if ESPN didnt really care if they got a dollar, as long as they got a little bit of time to promote their shows from the time that CBS had slated to promote CBS shows.

The ESPN family is gonna get huge ratings if the networks pre-empt their games for war coverage. I don't see many sports fans not watching the tourney, especially if they have money on it. Bling-bling!

MTV will probably switch to coverage of the war as well.

I think college atheletes should be given a rifle and a gas mask and sent to the front lines along with anyone in Bush and Rumsfeld's family between the age of 17 and 40. Then we'll see how popular stupid wars without justification really are.
