Friend got this threatening email sent to him from a newly created random hotmail account. Is there anyway to trace who sent it, like a program or something? It was sent from someone on our campus, so shouldn't be too hard to find.

nothing you can do but if it was actual physical threats you can contact microsoft and they will dig it up and give it to the police.

A friend of mine got the same thing about a year ago from her psycho ex. She went to the network administator and they they traced the computer it was sent from through the IP address, then found out who was logged onto that computer through their user information.
Most universities in Texas require you to log on through your SSN or other info. If they have something like that you may want to try it.

The persons IP address is listed in the header or the footer of every Hotmail message, its pretty easy to look up anon trolls. If using Outlook Express open the email message, click on file..properties and go to the details tab, the IP address is listed there.

It's probably a joke, unless he really pissed someone off bad....and then he should know who it is...unless he pisses everyone off bad..and then we are better off without him.
