I have heard the reference to 420 many times before and understand it's meaning but I don't understand it's origin. Could someone please enlighten me.

Actually, I have heard that that is an urban myth. Someone (here was it?) once posted a link to an article regarding the origin of it. I think it was first coined by some group of high school kids (the group had a nickname that I can't for the life of me remember - thx ganj!) back in the early seventies, and 4:20 was the time when they would meet up after school to burn. The term just spread around and reached the popularity it is at today.
