The Iced Tea vs. Sweet Tea comments in the Texas thread reminded me that I'd never even heard of Sweet Tea until a few months ago.

I'm assuming it's geographical - but just plain odd if you ask me.

You want sugar, drink Kool-Aid!

Down here in 'Bama, we call it Sweet Tea.

On a related topic...

We call every carbonated drink Coke. You want a Mountain Dew, Dr Pepper, RC Cola, or even Pepsi. Its still a Coke.

For those that may not comprehend how this works.

Guy 1 -Hey you want something to drink?

Guy 2 -What do you got?

Guy 1 -Water, SWEET Tea, or Coke.

Guy 2 - Cool gimme a Mountain Dew.

Well where I am from (Oregon) if someone wants their Iced Tea a little sweeter - they add sugar and get one of those long handled spoons. I prefer it with lemon

I just generally call it iced tea. On that rare occasion that I ask for tea, I always ask if it's sweetened. In your mainstream restaurants it usually isn't, but if you go to the more local ones you can pretty much assume that it comes already sweetened.

I said Iced Tea because everything up here is Iced.

Iced Tea with 5 or 6 of those little sugar packets.

And its called Iced Tea. We just sweeten it before-hand. Sweet Tea to me, and some of my friends, has another meaning...its what we call our Long Island Iced Teas.

I explained in the Texas thread why putting sugar in cold liquid cannot make sweet tea. It has to be sweetened while it is being brewed or it doesnt taste as good.

many places oversweeten though, which is why when i order at fast food type places i get half sweet half unsweet.

no it isnt the same as adding sugar packets, you do the NMR if you want to proove it.

There isn't much sweet tea to be found south and east of Lake Okeechobee. I miss it vary much.

On a side note, most of my family from AL calls it soda-pop or pop

I moved to Alabama from Nebraska in the early 80's and I've never been able to adjust to sweet tea. There's a local burger chain that is extremely popular for their hyper-sweetened tea-like product. It contains lots of molasses and, I suspect, very little actual tea. It makes me cringe to think of the crap.

Iced greeen tea is pretty good stuff, still needs sugar

Tea should be drunk hot, strong, with milk and sugar and from a teapot which can be optionally decorated with a 'cosy' (think bobble hat). An accompaniment of biscuits or a small cream cake in the after noon is just the ticket.

I remember going to Chicago and asking for sweet tea, first they looked at me like I was crazy, then I looked at them like they were.

I'm more of a fan of hot teas myself, there are so many varieties of a good tea, makes you shudder anytime you end up going back to Lipton. Iced tea wise, I tend to enjoy unsweeted green tea, anytime I go to restaurants and they serve sweetened tea it's usually too sweet for me and I end up drinking *gasp* water

Dunno about the froofy pot & accesories, but Red Label with cream and sugar is great stuff. It's only found in arabic food stores around here.

I like the little non-disolved sugar granules that accumulate at the bottom of the glass if I add sugar to my iced tea (which I rarely do!)

Hmm, Iced Tea and Sweet Tea are two similar things, but not the same. I call Iced Tea and Sweet Tea by what they are...

Prefer iced tea or green tea, just because sweet tea is soooo sweet. I really have to be in the mood to drink it.

Its Iced Tea and it comes in 2 forms sweetnd and non sweetnd.

Theres also only one way to make it.

Get a nice clear gallon size Jar put the tea and water in it (sugar also if you want the sweetnd version) and set that shit out in the sun for the day.

I normally make both kind incase I have guest who like non sweet Iced Tea.

Voro I think what you mean by oversweetnd is called super saturated since your on this science kick.

We call that "Sun Tea"

Just stick to Green Tea and all is well.

My theory is, the redder the neck, the more likely you'll hear sweet tea.

There is no other way of making tea imo so I don't call it sun tea. Its iced tea and its either sweet or not.

I've got a 5 gallon water jug I take fishing during the summer, it comes home empty. You lose more water than you take in when drinking beer.

When was the last time GB had weather like that? I figured it was just a cold seattle.

It's called iced tea, it even says so on the label.

I just want to go on record to say that I have never liked <tea served cold> in any form, so I do not drink it. Now, Ice Coffee, that is another matter.

My favorite sort of tea is that served in traditional Chinese restaraunts - good stuff! I will, on occassion, enjoy a nice cup of properly steeped tea, but that is more for the benefit of my wife who loves that stuff.

As for the name of <carbonated beverages>, I have always called it "soda", and though I understand why other areas call things different names, I never quite understood calling all <carbonated beverages> "coke" - I always thought Coke was a trademarked name of cola made by the Coka Cola corporation, so to me, it is like calling all vegatables "carrots". /shrug Of course, I could be wrong on the trademark thing .... I've been wrong before.

One last thought: when my mom and dad first got married, my mom, who is quite a baker, asked my dad to go shopping at the food market for all sorts of stuff. On the list was "soda", and when my dad got home with the bags of groceries, my mom asked him where the soda was. He held up the bottles of root beer, ginger ale, cola, etc, and said "you didnt say what kind you wanted so I got a variety". It seems my mom wanted "baking soda". Where she comes from in Massachusetts, they always called <carbonated beverages> "tonic".
