Boog,

The wife and I have our USMNT T-shirts, ready to go watch some of the games at the bar. She loves the game after watching my team develop the past few years. I don't post a ton, but will definitely be watching the World Cup.

World Cup is fun, but I actually just prefer premiere league. I'll watch the matches, and pray the US pulls some amazing play out of their rears.

Here is a link to the televised games with channel and time for each:

Just guessing, but I wouldn't be shocked to see most of the games available on ESPN3.com as well

Not World Cup news, but it is soccer related and I am proud of the ladies I coach. We were one of 32 teams approved to play in one of the largest showcases in California. A lot of teams applied and we were chosen. Another road trip in July!

Great to see Robben get a brace and help stop Spain from getting any points in their first match. The timing on van Persie's header was just friggin' perfect.

Agreed, that was possibly goal of the World Cup. Spain looked awful in the second half.

Also sad to see such poor ref performances so early in the tournament.

Well, Greece forgot where they parked the bus, and Costa Rica tore up Uruguay. Nice start to Saturday, and I'm wishing I could be home to watch the England v Italy game.

Amen to this. Just find a good way to make it happen.

FIFA considering review system to improve officiating at World Cup

RIO DE JANEIRO – Perhaps this is the worst of it, and World Cup refereeing will never ever be this bad again.

At least entertain that thought – in between roars of laughter – as a snippet of evidence indicates better days are ahead for the most reviled officials in the world.

FIFA chief Sepp Blatter suggested this week that managers should be allowed to challenge referee's decisions – much like in the NFL – and at a press conference here Saturday, another FIFA official chimed in without holding up a stop sign.

When asked about Blatter's remarks, Gerard Houllier of FIFA's Technical Study Group said, "It shows FIFA has an open mind about everything and anything."

Even if these are empty words, this is a notable change in an organization that has made Bud Selig and Major League Baseball seem radically progressive. After a long spell of resistance, the goal-line cameras are in use in this tournament, and Blatter seemed convinced that managers should have the right to challenge referees.

"Why don't we give team managers the possibility of two challenges for refereeing during the match?" Blatter told delegates at the FIFA Conference in Sao Paolo. "If the manager disagrees with a decision, why should he not ask for an immediate TV review?"

That makes an astounding amount of sense, especially in light of the controversial penalty call on Croatia after Fred's blatant dive in Brazil's opening 3-1 victory on Thursday. It's not at all clear what would be under the challenge umbrella – red cards? Yellow cards? Non-calls? – but that was a decision that clearly changed the momentum and perhaps the outcome of a huge game. And it was pretty obvious on replay.

...

My U16 girls just won a U19 tournament this weekend, beating a U19 State Cup champion in the final.

Missed most of the games this weekend, but ready for a week of games ahead. I am amazed how many of the team have come back this year. Second half collapses all over.

It's been a great WC so far. Thus far it is the highest scoring WC since 1958!

Was excited to see Costa Rica upset Uruguay. One of the few places I've been outside the USA(amazing country and people) and It's great to see CONCACAF teams do well.

The Netherlands game was amazing, they look like ones to beat thus far. Not sure what happened to Spain, except not having Puyol and having Xavi and others getting up there in age. More though I think that other nations have figured out how to counter their system and they need to evolve QUICK.

Extremely excited for the USA game in less than 9 hours time! Ghana knocked us out in the last two WCs and in all likely-hood it is a must win if we are to have any chance at escaping our group.

It is going to be a struggle to decide whether to record the Germany/Portugal and US/Ghana games since I will be stuck in the office, or I can just find a gametracker to throw on my second monitor to play "spoiler." :(

Still, some good games!

U.S.A. Win!

It wasn't a very good game overall but thankfully the U.S.A has a solid defense.

Germany looked great.

Pepe is always an idiot, and it was nice to see him finally go over the edge and get the red card after all that he got away with against FC Bayern in the Champion's League. There wasn't even going to be a call on his tackle until he had to go back to Mueller and butt heads with him.

Ultimately - Because soccer doesn't want to eliminate the potential for referee corruption by implementing a challenge + replay system.

U.S.A's win over Ghana looks more impressive now that German played Ghana to a tie. Hoping U.S.A. comes through against Portugal to lock things up to advance.

They better come through against Portugal...with the form they've been "playing" in, Portugal looks READY to go home

At least Miroslav Klose got into the match, and he was able to tie Ronaldo's World Cup Scoring record. Hoping he gets more time, and goals, this time around!

If U.S.A and Ghana end up 1-1-1, is head to head considered first or goal differential?

Would kind of suck for two teams to have equal records and the team that won head to head not move on. I'm guessing it's goal differential though.

Germany should let U.S.A. win since they have lots of goals scored vs Portugal and would advance anyway. We were very nice to the Germans after WWII! :D

It would go down to GD first, and a Germany loss to the US "could" send them home too.

If the result was to be blamed on anyone, it would have to be Geoff Cameron. To sum it up:
Over the entire match, Cameron was solid for the most part, but the nightmarish first eight minutes and his failure to mark Varela on the goal can't be ignored. He simply had to do better in both situations.
He let the first ball through to Nani for the first goal, and then he didn't have the man marked that scored the second goal. One might have been an accident, but the second was piss-poor defending.

I still blame Bradley. In the decisive last 2 mins, he gave away the ball. The last one was on the final drive that Portugal scored but he screwed up a minute or so before that as well. Perhaps he was exhausted but otherwise can't believe how careless he was.

That was so disapointing after waiting an entire half for US's shots to start hitting. Oh well, not like they are done yet! Germany looked very human against Ghana. If US pushes pace like 2nd half tonight, they may pull out another tie.

Updated Soccer Power Index odds to advance:

- Germany: 99.7 percent
- United States: 76 percent
- Ghana: 19 percent
- Portugal: 5 percent

Simplest Scenarios

- Germany: Advance with win/draw vs. USA
- United States: Advance with win/draw vs. GER
- Portugal: Advance with win vs. GHA AND GER/USA do not tie, IF POR wins tiebreak with loser (see below)
- Ghana: Advance with win vs. POR AND GER/USA do not tie, IF GHA wins tiebreak with loser (see below)

U.S. Scenarios

- Win/draw vs. Germany
- Loss and Portugal-Ghana draw
- Loss and win tiebreaker vs. Portugal-Ghana winner

Tiebreakers

If the United States loses, Ghana would qualify instead if either game is decided by a margin of two goals or more. If the U.S. loses by one goal, Ghana would need to win by two goals or be involved in a higher-scoring one-goal win. For instance, a 1-0 scoreline in both games would put the United States through on head-to-head. So, if the U.S. loses 1-0, then Ghana must win 2-1 to qualify on goals scored.

To surpass the U.S., Portugal will need a goal-difference swing of five (head-to-head is level). So for instance, Portugal would need to win 3-0 and U.S. lose 2-0, among other equivalent scorelines. The teams will draw lots if goal difference is identical (this would happen with a 3-0 U.S. defeat and a 2-0 Portugal win, for example).
I guess a tie would work to get both teams into the second round.

Still a good chance U.S.A moves on even with a loss. (unless they get blown out by Germany and Ghana wins)

Which is possible on both counts. Portugal looks lost. US dominated the game. Ghana actually outplayed the US most of their match and Germany is capable of dropping 4-5 goals on the US. I hope they win or tie, but they are still in danger. Great to see Concacaf teams doing so well. I had my Costa Rica jersey on at practice for my brother before the last match, most of the girls I coach love Mexico and one of the girls has been on the U17 Mexico development team for 2 year and my goalie was last cut on the U20 (she was a week too old for the U17) behind 2 college goalies so excited for that as well. Now we just need the US to pull through. Unfortunately for my team trainer, his Honduran countrymen are not doing as well.

A draw in Germany/USA makes sense for both teams. I know the USA wants to finish atop the group, but do they want to risk injury or a bad loss when all we need is a tie? Same goes for Germany. I think both teams will play seriously, but conservatively, especially after/if the first goal is scored. Also Argentina has not performed that well and the dark horses in their group look unpredictable and dangerous. With the upsets so far in this WC I'm not sure you are better off playing against a #1 or #2 seeded team in the next round.

Also, Mexico's coach is hilarious to watch on the sideline, so I'm glad they made it through. This is the greatest thing I've ever seen:
