Face On (Virtual Technology)

Post by Winnow »

I find the topic interesting enough to make a thread where I can post crap about it. I remember years ago reading an article about how in the future we'd be able to digitally impose any face we wanted, including our own, onto the characters in movies. We're getting closer to that.

I posted this Titan tech demo on another thread:

Shows how detailed and smooth facial expressions and movement has become

This video is amazing:

Using a mini kinect type device, watch how accurate the facial expressions are without the need for any markers on the face itself and in real time. Imagine using that in an MMO. You wouldn't necessarily need to use your own face but your facial expressions would be spot on for your character. The stuff after the 3:20 mark is impressive and that kinda of expression would be light years ahead of the dead pan faces seen in games like Oblivion.

The new Kinect (reportedly until next Tuesday's announcement) has a resolution of 1920x1080 so it will be able to scan much higher detail than the original kinect.

Finally,

For $99.00 Disney will scan your head and make a Stormtrooper with your head on it.

It'll cost you $99.95 and about 10 minutes of your time to get your face 3D scanned, but it would be totally worth it. A 7.5-inch model Stormtrooper is then generated by 3D printer, which will be delivered to your home about 7 to 8 weeks later.
