Routing Issue. Help!

Pretty sure that one of you works in networking, and I'm at my wits' end, so I figure it can't hurt to try here. Having a problem connecting to my Dreamhost server via my Comcast network. It's not a DNS issue, it resolves ok; I think it has to be routing, as a traceroute always times out after like 15 hops.
I know that the server is up. If I VPN into my work network, I can reach it just fine. If I shut off wifi on my iPhone, I can hit it just fine from the cellular network. It's got to be something specifically between Comcast's network and Dreamhost, right?
I've called Comcast numerous times now and their tech support is the worst in the world. In my most recent foray, they transferred me to the "elite" xfinity support, who told me that they'd be happy to have a technician help me out for $79, and he'd RDP into my machine or something. To which I told them to pound sand, since it's a problem on their fucking end and there's no way I'm paying money for that bullshit. If there were a better alternative to Comcast in my area, I'd switch in a heartbeat.
Is there anything I can do on my end?

If you look at your traceroute, do you have 2 ip addresses that constantly repeat? Can you post the trace by chance?

Traceroute doesn't really tell you what you think it does..
It uses UDP packets by default (on linux, and I think windows)
My UDP trace stopped at the same place the first time I tried, however now it's getting a little further (I think dreamhost had a hosed router)
Code: Select all
11 xe-0-1-0.mpr1.lax7.us.above.net (64.125.30.5) 220.449 ms 219.645 ms 220.437 ms
12 (64.124.196.90) 197.231 ms 195.971 ms 194.776 ms
13 ip-208-113-190-1.dreamhost.com (208.113.190.1) 195.469 ms 195.580 ms 199.145 ms
14 router-0.hq.newdream.net (66.33.201.1) 243.791 ms * router-0.hq.newdream.net (66.33.201.1) 270.403 ms
15 * * *
16 * * *
If you use a ICMP traceroute you can get all the way to the host:
Code: Select all
11 xe-0-1-0.mpr1.lax7.us.above.net (64.125.30.5) 229.536 ms 227.877 ms 226.546 ms
12 (64.124.196.90) 197.138 ms 197.862 ms 200.140 ms
13 ip-208-113-190-1.dreamhost.com (208.113.190.1) 246.824 ms * *
14 router-0.hq.newdream.net (66.33.201.1) 354.192 ms * *
15 force.dreamhost.com (69.163.182.25) 220.148 ms 198.200 ms 198.167 ms
I suspect your problem is solved now though.

BTW, unless you forged the first couple of hops, you divulged a lot of information about your personal connection on a forum that's indexed by google..
99% of the time you can drop the first 50% of the traceroute hops and it doesn't make a difference from a networking diagnosis perspective, and I'd go back and edit out at least lines 1 and 2 from your posts...
Oh, and if it's not solved, it's probably dreamhost firewalling your IP because they think you're a dirty hacker, or their router doesn't know how to find your IP/Comcast. Either way I'd hassle dreamhost first, it's more likely to be their problem since it occurs at the last hop.

Thx info, I was seeing red after my call with comcast and didn't think to obfuscate the first few hops.
I'd originally opened tickets with Dreamhost when I first noticed this, and the guy was so helpful and (seemingly) knowledgeable that I assumed his blame of Comcast was correct. I'll re-open.

I tend to agree with Zelath I was able to see through right to your host without any issue through a completely path and it went through just fine.
