Havn't had much luck finding it on the internet so figured I would see if I could tap the vast intellectual resource known as veeshan vault figuring there would be at least one fish afficiando out there.

Anyone know much about Oranda gold fish? Seen a cool looking one yesterday and impulsivly bought it hehe...was just wondering things like if they are pretty much like any other gold fish if I can keep them in an un-aerated tank whats best stuff to feed them (gold fish flakes and crumbles atm..) and any special info would be much appreciated

I impulsively bought some goldfish crackers the other day. They were cheese flavored too.

Red swedish fish are the yum!!

Green ones are kind of ok too though if you are stuck with the multi-colored.

i majored in marine biology in college, but i dont know jack shit about that fish.

'Fancy' goldfish are essentially inbred carp.

Orandas are a fucking hideous mutation.
Mutated lionheads with thier fleshy alien head growth are inbred with mutated fantails and their deformed spine and grotesque split caudal fin.

In the wild, these mutations wouldn't last about 5 minutes.
The deformed spine and mutated fins make it difficult for these mutant fish to swim. The deformed air sac makes it near impossible for 'fancy' goldfish to maintain proper orientation in the water.

Breeders cull thousands of mutant goldfish to develop a 'pure' strain of these varieties that are pleasing to certain people.

Pretty sick how some people can find deformities appealing.



Anyway, being a carp, goldfish are very dirty and very hardy.
Don't overfeed these gluttons or they will overeat and quickly foul the water. Doesn't matter if the water is aerated, these things ahve a very short life expectancy anyway.




Up until the past few years I kept several tanks of African Cichlids. At one point I made decent money breeding them and selling fry to other breeders and pet stores.


I kept mostly julidochomis..
Pretty interesting fish... aggressive, territorial and carnivorous.

i happen to agree with you on the issue of genetic freaks when applied to dogs for sure.

especially little mop dogs and other variations on the 'yapper' theme.

I'd sooner get a pooch from the pound then a deformed, genetic, inbred, freakshow of a dog.

I have an aquaintence who is a respectable breeder. He breeds only italian greyhounds and whippets. Awesome dogs and they have a very good bloodline. Trying to convince my fiancee into getting a Whippet... I have to take her up to see those puppies sometime.

My old boss' wife got bitten by her pure breed dalmatian, and had to get like 75 stitches and reconstructive surgery on her lip and cheek. The dog just had a mind snap and bit her, it had to be put down after that.

Give me a good cross-breed or a mutt any day.

My pure-bred Lab is the best dog ever. You can play with his ears when he's eating, and he doesn't mind. You can pull his tail, he might yelp, but he doesn't mind. Infact he looks abashed for "speaking out". I have little cousins that come over and play with him (he's like 110 lbs) and he has to be the most child friendly dog in the world. Seriously, the best dog ever. It's funny to see him attack my 2 year old cousin, he just walks up to her, and because she's his height, ofcourse she gets a lick right in the face. Always funny to watch her laugh.

As with any pet I want, I have to wait until we buy a house. Fish are wonderful but they take some dedication to keep the tank clean and such. Then, ofcourse, a small tank just won't do. Must get a tank that is 50 gallons or larger. Then I will make it look like Kedge Keep!

Whippets are great dog, that's what we had growing up. Well, she was half whippet... but she's awesome. High energy and high strung, but smart and well behaved if taught properly.

i used to maintain a couple of saltwater tanks, but i stopped because of the way that the fish are commonly harvested. i think the industry in general does more harm to those animals than anything else, and i was interested in aquaria because i liked the animals....so i just wasnt comfortable supporting that industry.

they are much cooler to look at SCUBA diving anyways

Most of the saltwater fish you see in pet shops are wildcaught.
They are incredibly difficult to breed in captivity.

That's the main reason marine fish are so expen$ive.

yeah and they catch them by using explosives and poisons =).

they also require a lot more high quality equipment to keep alive through the distribution and retail process, which of course also contributes to the cost.

captive breeding of clownfish is pretty established now. they are cool =).

I've got a huge acrylic tank I want to sell, the ones that have the 2 tubes going between 2 tanks. 1 Undergravel filter(Flubi sp) each side...lights/stand/all the fixins.

I cant seem to sell the fucking thing to anyone. Anyone in Cali lookin for a large tank? I can take a Digi of it if interested (CHEAP)

All goldfish need their tanks to be WAY overfiltered. Allow at least 30 gallons per goldfish. Yes, really. Fifty gallons is even better. Putting a nice Eheim canister filter that is sized for an aquarium a couple of sizes bigger than the one you are filtering will go a long ways to keeping one alive. Do lots of extreme water changes, very frequently. Contrary to previous poster's claims, orandas have been known to live as long as 20 years, but they are prone to many defects due to their inbreeding. The most common of these is swim bladder disorder where the fish will lose it's ability to maintain itself in an upright position or to dive, basically they are stuck floating, sometimes upside down. Once this happens it is VERY difficult to cure. To prevent it, never feed them flakes, but rather presoaked pellets. Making sure they get lots of fresh veggies helps as well. I had one that would eat thawed peas from my hand! They do well in temps on the low side, but they can't take the extreme heat like their non-fancy brethren. Make sure the gravel in the tank is larger than its mouth, or it could choke on a piece, since goldfish have a habit of picking up rocks from the bottom.
