chicago stampede

CHICAGO - Hundreds of screaming guests rushed the exit of a crowded nightclub after someone set off a chemical spray, and at least 21 people were crushed to death in the panic, fire officials said.

There were more than 1,500 people in the two-story Epitome Night Club on the city's South Side when someone released pepper spray or Mace into the air sometime after 2 a.m., Fire Commander Will Knight said.

"Everybody smashed; people crying, couldn't breathe," said clubgoer Reggie Clark. "Two ladies next to me died. A guy under me passed out."

Twenty-one people were confirmed dead, Chicago Police spokesman Pat Camden said.

"It appears a disturbance from within led to a mass chaos where people headed for the door. Most of the fatalities appear to have been crushed or had injuries due to suffocation," said police Officer Ozzie Rodriguez.

Cory Thomas, 33, went to the club to pick up two friends. As he waited outside, he saw people inside the club start to back up against the glass front door.

"You could see a mound of people. People were stacking on top of each other, screaming and gagging, I guess from the pepper spray. The door got blocked because there were too many people stacked up against it," he said.

"I saw them taking out a pregnant woman," Thomas said. "She was in bad shape. I saw at least 10 lifeless bodies."

Kristy Mitchell, 22, was one of the people trampled on the stairway.

"People were stomping my legs," she said. "When they pulled me up, I was dizzy and I couldn't breathe."

Knight said the total number of injuries was unclear because many of those with minor injuries were being taken to hospitals by family and friends.

Amishoov Blackwell, 30, was checking his coat on the second floor when people started rushing past him. The flow of the crowd pushed him back down the stairs and he fell on top of several people, he said. He was trapped on top of the others until firefighters rescued him about 30 minutes later.

"It wasn't nothing but two girls fighting," Blackwell said. "Why'd they have to spray Mace?"

The Rev. Jesse Jackson (news - web sites) arrived at the scene early Monday and urged community members to help each other.

"We are asking area ministers to go to hospitals," Jackson said. "My people are overwhelmed with the suddenness of this. At a time like this, you have to lean on your faith."

The melee marks one of the nation's deadliest stampedes.

In December 1991, nine young people were crushed to death in a gymnasium stairwell while awaiting a celebrity basketball game in New York.

In December 1979, 11 people were killed in Cincinnati in a crush to get into a concert by The Who.
that is sad :(

it's been a while since I've been to a night club but 1500 people seems awefully high
when I heard about this on the radio this morning they said firefighters had to cut through the side of the club when it became apparent that the front door was the ONLY exit!
Hope someone will look more closely at the clubs around here and the safety of people inside.

what a shitty way to die :(

The asshat club owners had the back/side door chained shut so nobody could sneak in (Or that's what I heard).

They should be charged accordingly if that's true.

You know if I was in such a place and noticed everyone running like mad at the door, wouldn't your first response be to move to the opposite end of the bar and wait for the crowd to flush out.

Why press yourself into the mass knowing that you're in for a crush?

more details are coming up with time

refresh of that link I posted now also says that there was an additional exit in the back but it was not open and security people were directing everyone to the front door with a steep stairway

what a fuck up :(

When it comes to getting media coverage, this guy is Johnny on the fuckin spot. I'm pretty much a liberal, but man do I hate Jesse Jackson.

Mass paranoia and panic probably ensued when the patrons suspected it might be a terrorist bio/chem attack.......

The owners of this club are screwed. They had all other doors except for the front one chained shut and there was only one small stairwell between the first and second floor. Not to mention the idots that sprayed the pepper spray. You got to be a real moron to think that wouldn't cause a panic. Anyone who has ever been near that stuff knows you can feel the shit in a very wide area. Add a little alcohol and people who are already confused are going to go crazy.

Disgusting.

First of all, yea, the owners are going to get sued off their asses. And rightfully so, at that. Second, for the person asking why everyone would pile on into a huge jam like that, some people didn't have a choice/chance. When a throng of terrified people come bearing down on you, and nowhere else to go, you either let yourself get pushed along, or you get pushed down and trampled. Read some of the accounts of the people that were there. Frightening...

Saw on the news this morning the pepper spray that started it was because a security person sprayed to women fighting on the dance floor.
Also the City is saying the club had a court order to not be open and the owner opened anyway.

Well I hope you all enjoy reading more and more about stampedes that kill dozens of people every time someone drops a jar of dill pickles in the grocery store, the more your government scares you into believing there's terrorists working for saddam hussein lurking behind you at every waking moment.

Actually they did ... from CNN
People shouted 'poison gas'
Witnesses said hundreds of panicky club patrons rushed for the door about 3 a.m. (4 a.m. EST) Monday.

Witnesses could hear shouts that the incident was a terrorist attack. Some of them told CNN that people shouted "poison gas." Lakeshia Blackwell, 20, heard someone say, "I'll bet it's bin Laden."

When some patrons began to vomit or pass out -- apparently from chemical fumes -- the crowd scrambled to get down the club's single open staircase leading outside.

Having been to some really out of control concerts where the people werent even stampeding, just pushing, crushing and trying to move, its not hard to see how things could disintegrate fast in a perceived panic.
Had my thumb nail ripped off at one, and at one it was so packed that my feet werent even touching the ground, which was good cos the guy next to me was peeing there
