#Scifund Challenge (crowdsourcing basic scientific research)

Post by Animale »

Hi everybody,

Thought I'd drop a line on something I'm participating in that I think is fairly interesting. It's called #Scifund challenge, and here's a little blurb about it.

The #SciFund Challenge is a grand experiment in science funding.

Can scientists raise money for their research by convincing the general public to open their wallets for small-amount donations? In more and more fields – from music to dance to journalism – people are raising lots of money for projects in precisely this way. The process is called crowdfunding. You can think of it as the model charities have always used (bundling lots of donations to do good works), with an internet/social media twist. Can this model work for funding scientific research? Let’s find out!

It's on rockethub http://www.rockethub.com/projects/scifund, and the concept relies upon small donations (kickstarter is another example of this).

Anyway, please go have a browse. My project is http://www.rockethub.com/projects/3705- ... is-at-ncsu. Any amount helps me out (even 10 cents!) and hopefully this can become a way for scientists to connect with the public and communicate what is going on at the cutting edge. For me, the number of donations is more important than the total amount funded (although that's not the case for all of the projects).

Thanks in advance and hopefully I'll be able to send you one of the "rewards"!

Sorry to derail, but what's with putting a pound sign before shit lately, is it some kind of twitter reference? I see people do it all the time on Facebook and for some reason it annoys the piss out of me.

Good luck!

actually, I had a 6 digit ICQ number and I sold it on ebay back when people cared about ICQ, because by that time the numbers were like 10 digits.

Same. 661###. I haven't logged in in over 5 years probably though. Not even sure I'd know my login info or what email account I used. I basically stopped using it when they started putting ads in and AOL bought it or whoever that was. I just know they kept updating the client to be more and more crappy.

In only two weeks I've surpassed my funding goal! Wow - thanks to anybody who donated from here and just a note - I still would love donations of any amount - as mentioned above the total number of contributors is important for me as I "sell" this result to my school and to external funding agencies.

Here's the link again.

Thanks again.

My 6 digit ICQ # starts with 172###.. I win. :) I actually log it in too. Course ICQ is the absolute spammiest chat client I know of. All hail Trillian.
