I don't understand how shitty it could have been to not be worth boxing and marketing like it was gold to at least recoup something.

I'm amazed they hadn't cut their losses on Sovereign years ago. The project had been in development as early on as EQ Beta. It continued throughout the years, collecting dust while EQ was Verant/Sony's number one priority. Meanwhile, countless dollars and man-hours were being wasted on the Sovereign project -- and by all accounts, the game wasn't even very good.

I played it at E3 and thought it was a blast. I'm a nut for strategy games though.
The reason it lasted so long was because it was Smedley's pet project.

Brad McQuaid touted this game at Gencon in 1998. It looked like it had some potential and I had more chance of playing it than Planetside. Why pay for a FPS when there are so many free ones out there like unreal, quake, etc.

I think one of the main draws of any game that involves persistence is the persona you are able to develop around that character. In CS or Unreal you can gain a reputation for being a good player, however, there are not symbols or advancements to show your achievements. In any of the free fps games you never really develop friendships or in game reputations the way you do in Everquest or in any persistent environment. While this may not be for everyone especially if you just into having a few games of capture the flag or trying to get the best kill/death ratio, I think that it would be a major draw for a lot of people. There are other persistent RTS games in development, but most don't look all that promising. Sovereign sounded cool, but they just never had the right ideas on how to implement it correctly. In the end they would have ended up with a weak version of C&C that probably would have sold a few thousand copies, but would have severely hurt the company's reputation even more than the last few EQ expansions have.
