I have this internship as of a week ago, and it's AWESOME. Paid, difficult... etc. My resume is twice as good from one week of exposure.

I'm pursuing my CCNA (computer networking), and working with some of the best minds in the area.

So on Friday, I was there late, probably until 8 pm. I still have a thick stack of new hire papers (etc), and at this point in the night it's only me and one other guy, one of the senior network engineers I work with. While we're still talking about routing pipes through the cloud, I ask him where to get a folder for my papers, he says on the fourth floor on the cabinet to the right, and resumes what he was talking about.

So a few minutes later I finally gather my things to leave, take a quick trip up to the fourth (executive) floor, swipe my key card to get through the door, jiggle the (locked) cabinet door, and then leave with my papers in hand. No biggie.

I get a call 15 minutes later from my boss, saying I tripped the alarm and that he was now at the building with the security team, looking at my picture on the cameras that starting recording as soon as I opened the fourth floor door. He also mentioned I interrupted dinner with his wife. I was extremely apologetic and told him I had no clue that the security system had gone off.

Am I going to get fired? He told me we'd talk about what happened the next work day (Monday).

Here's my assessment.

If you were never informed about the alarm or that you were not allowed into said area, than it is in no way your fault. It's someone else's for not training you properly. If your boss chooses to make a stink about it, then he is merely using it as an excuse to puff his chest and throw his weight around. The fact that your security card allowed you into the executive area at all shows that you weren't anywhere you were not supposed to be.

Also, your boss left dinner with his wife and was looking at security footage within 15 minutes of it happening? Does he live in the building or something?

He probably wants to talk to you and try to pinpoint the blame. Either your security access is set up incorrectly or someone didn't train you properly. Of course, he could just want to flex his penis a little and let you know he's the boss. I think it will be one of those!

Step 1. Blow off steam
Step 2. Realise you're being a twat and say you'll discuss it Monday. Two benefits here, 1. you cool down and don't say anything actionable to the employee, 2. you ruin their weekend
Step 3. Chew them out again Monday in a half hearted attempt to make the problem look as serious as it was when you had your toy taken away Friday.

Really doubt it will be an issue, and rather than look to push blame around I'd just apologise that his dinner was ruined (noting to myself and the later judge in the lawsuit that I didn't apologise for setting off an alarm I was not informed of) and make it a nice short meeting.

Fess up to being a corporate spy and that you are willing to work for him if he can pay you more.

I hope you at least grabbed a stack of Post-Its or something from cabinet for your trouble!

Did you tell him that you almost had a family to support and need your job?

You should have questioned their ability to secure their networks if they cannot secure one door from an inquisitive intern
