Gout

Post by Avestan »

Sucks. WTF - I am getting old.

3 days ago I had no idea what this was - went to work out and by 1am I could not stand up. I can still barely walk and I am on a ton of ultradrugs.

wtf. This sucks.

Sorry man, wish you the best of luck with this. I don't know much about it, but I know it is supposed to be painful. Get well!
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. Gout sucks a bunch of ass.

I have an extremely high pain threshold, but when gout flares up on me the weight of a bed sheet to much for my foot.

Nice to see you are still lurking about Varia. :)

I can only hope I don't get that, but I am getting older.

Yeah, i got the pleasure of gout too (thanks mom, inherited, at least according to my doctor), and its not fun.

But to be honest, when you know you got it, and just dont eat the foods that trigger it, its no biggie....i had one attack in two years, and that was because i ate a premade sauce with cranberries that appearantly triggered it bigtime...not sure why, no clue on cranberries, but im never eating those ever again, just to be on the safe side.

Basically, dont eat too much red meat, no innards at all (no issue for me), aviod too many shrooms and peas, dont eat a milk based breakfast like yougurt too often :).

Sorry to hear, but don't put too much into the "getting old" thing, it has nothing to do with age. I had my first attack at the age of 26 so take from that what you will. What I can do is share my experience in dealing with it.

I recommend that you make sure it's gout. There are some other issues that may present themselves as gout, but may not be exactly gout. The sure fire way is when you have an attack and the joint is swollen that they test it (ie. stick a needle, drain the fluid, and test it to confirm gout). If it is gout, read up on the current research, a lot has changed. Definitely go see a specialist, ie. a Rheumatologist so they can confirm and do additional tests like a 24 hour urine collection to get a better reading of your uric levels. General doctors just suck when it comes to things like this. All they'll do is prescribe whatever new med is on the market like Uloric and Colcrys. Take it serious and do what you can to avoid an actual attack.

We've actually been screwed in regards to medications during an attack because the FDA had generic Colchicine (which has been around forever) pulled from the market and they gave one company (URL Pharma) exclusive rights to market a brand name reformulation called Colcrys which can cost up to $5 PER pill. Thankfully it was only for like 3 years, so expect generics back on the market probably in 2012-2013.

As for the food, no matter what someone tells you at the end of the day a lot of it is going to be up to your body and how it deals with it as well as what combinations of foods you eat. While research has shown that certain foods do cause a direct increase of uric acid (meats, shellfish), other foods don't really have proof positive either way. And some older research which said foods like milk and coffee are bad, other recent research say the opposite. I think ultimately it goes back to that saying, too much of anything is bad for you. My personal experience is that some foods like milk and cherries help keep things at bay. And of course make sure you drink plenty of water. Daily recommendations are a lot higher than what you think and what most people actually drink. Besides the types of food I eat, which include red meat, chicken, ham, bacon, turkey, shrimp, lobster, crabs, etc... all the bad shit hehe, I try to keep it balanced so I've limited myself to not over eat any one food. What has definitely had a direct help is taking my Allopurinol daily like clock work every night around the same time. Ever since I've been doing it and sticking with it, I've been able to keep my uric levels low. I even have my pharmacy set to automatic refills and get an automated call when it's ready as well as have a reminder on my phone.
When the world is mine, your death shall be quick and painless.
