Re: Kinect...
I'm actually talking about how many of each console has sold since the PS3 was released... The total number sold since Dec 2006.
The 360 most definitely outsold the PS3 from Nov 2005 to Nov 2006.
I think the sales figures were like 7 million for the 360 and 0 for the PS3.

Re: Kinect...
But why are ignoring the first year of 360 sales? To show that PS3's have sold faster? Why would you expect 360 to keep up when 7 million potential buyers already have them? It's not like it's toilet paper and people are going to have to keep buying it ad infinitum. There is a finite (growing, but not forever) total number of people that will buy a PS3 or a 360, does ignoring like 8% of the total market share not skew the data, making it kind of worthless?
There are more 360s in the wild, ergo the 360 is more popular.
I guess I don't understand the point of the argument.

Ok so the 360 has outsold the ps3 in total units. That we all agree on. I thought Miir was trying to argue against that fact, turns out he is saying the ps3 has sold faster than the 360, gotcha. But it's still behind the 360 in total units. I can move on now!

Re: Kinect...
It just gets better and better for Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Kinect. Enjoy holding those funny little snow-cone thingies PS3 fans!Kinect update could greatly improve performance, report suggests
What if Kinect could track individual fingers? What if it could see not only the position of your hand, but its rotation as well? According to a report by Eurogamer, more advanced tracking from the Kinect is possible -- but only through a firmware update which its sources say is coming.
The Kinect sensor would be able to transfer up to 35MB/s of data, but is currently locked to about 15MB/s. The artificial limit is imposed by the fact that multiple USB devices may be connected to the console. However, Microsoft engineers are supposedly working on a fix that will allow a greater amount of data to be transferred from the Kinect, upgrading the 320x240 image it currently uses to a 640x480 one -- an effective fourfold increase in pixels.
(This space reserved for yet another great Kinect hack. Note: No placeholder needed for the Move)

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/20/kinec ... cognition/
How's the Move handle Sign Language?
It seems so obvious: Using Kinect to help people learn American Sign Language. That's exactly what researchers at Georgia Tech College of Computing are working on, pairing Microsoft's oft-hacked motion sensing camera with custom software that previously required colored gloves kitted with wrist-mounted, 3-axis accelerometers. On a series of increasingly difficult tests, the software returned results with 100% accuracy, 99.98% accuracy, and 98.8% accuracy.
These promising results mean the team will be working on updates including a larger vocabulary which necessitates the need of "hand shape features." The initial proof-of-concept demo launched with a small vocabulary that excluded them in favor of broader gestural movements with the arms and body. We imagine that reported fourfold increase in Kinect image resolution would have a major benefit here, should Microsoft ever release it.

Winnow, the Move works great for games that people are actually playing now.
Controls are great in Resident Evil 5, MAG, Tiger Woods 11 and Heavy Rain.
There's also some downloadable games that have added Move support like Planet Minigolf, Pain Auditorium HD.
What existing games have added Kinect compatibility?

It does what it's supposed to do and it does it extremely well. Because it uses the camera instead of IR, it's far more accurate, steady and responsive than the Wii.

Re: Kinect...
In a way you have in your previous post. My point was that it''s probably not very complicated to 'retrofit' existing games with a relatively simplistic control mechanism like a Wiimote which has been around for years. Whereas Kinect is a whole new way of doing things so yeah you're not just going to drop it into most games. It will be up to new games to utilize it the way it was meant to be.miir wrote:I don't think anyone has tried to argue that the Move isn't really just an improvement on the Wii's design.Aslanna wrote:The Move works great for games that people have been playing for years. Re: Kinect...
If someone enjoys the Move, more power to them.. The ~$210 for the move, additional controller and two navigation controllers doesn't seem worth it to me to duplicate the Wii on less motion friendly games but whatever.
There's no realistic argument about which system is a better value and has more potential in the near future.
The best thing about the PS3 is that you can have custom themes with boobies. The worst thing may very well be Heavy Rain, so never mention that game again if you want to defend the PS3.

Re: Kinect...
Not sure what your problem is with Heavy Rain.
It's a pretty cool game.
Also not sure how you get $210 for the Move.
The nav controller is only used in a few games and none are splitscreen, so getting 2 is completely unnecessary.
Move games are better and cheaper.
Move is definitely a better value.
The Move offers more fun now, Kinect has more potential in future (not necessarily gaming) applications.

Kinect will definitely outlast this generation of consoles. I can see MS incorporating that type of technology on future consoles.more potential in the near future.

My only other suggestion is Kinect Sports.
Honestly, between Rock Band and Dance Central you'll be hard pressed to fit in more games for a group of people in a party situation. Those games never fail to impress and engage almost everyone at a party throughout the night.
Just be sure you play any new Kinect games yourself first so you are familiar with them before playing with others. It makes things a lot smoother!

Kinect Sports is the most fun. I took my Kinect up to my parents for the holiday and that's primarily what we played. There's ton's of mini games, party games and then there's the six main sports as well.
I'd recommend that for sure.
DO NOT get the Party games or whatever the last game is I reviewed on this thread. It's horrible. Kinect Sports is great all around. Good use of kinect, fun games, big variety of things you can do. fun solo and with up to 4 players.

You sound like a crazy person. I'm talking-"homeless person yelling at trashcans"-crazy. Here is yet another example of your overzealous Sony White Knight syndrome in the works. I have no idea why you shit up every thread you can with it, especially when they have absolutely nothing to do with anything Sony at all. You pretty much ruined the NFS thread with this same shit.
I posted Kinect sales figures within hours of them being announced at CES in the official Kinect thread. Why are you so upset exactly? Why are you so crazy about anything having to do with the Xbox besting the PS3? You seem to flip the fuck out at how the PS3 is losing in overall sales, software, cross platform game performance, and now it's being soundly beaten in waggle tech. Who cares? It's not like the PS3 is a failure. It's just in 3rd place. Why does that bother you so much?
Anyway, back on topic...
Analysts are now saying that the actual sell through could be as high as 7 million. The initial attach rate of this device is amazing, especially when you consider the relative lack of launch games and the fact that it's a 150$ peripheral. I'm interested to see developers put some real effort into the device now that it is an unabashed success. I want core and hybrid games using the tech.

I went into Best Buy yesterday to get a new wireless USB adapter... Walked out with Kinect, Kinect Sports, Dance Central and Def Jam Rap Star. I'm not even sure how it happened, it's all kind of a blur
Anyhow, got it set up but haven't really had the chance to use it. I just moved and don't have things arranged in a way that will allow me to play kinect games yet. I'll get around to it this weekend.
Initial thoughts: Voice activation is cool, needs more options. Shouldn't be a separate dashboard for kinect, they should already have it integrated into every piece of the dashboard/xbox live infrastructure.

Grats Canada!Largest gathering of people dressed as garden gnomes
Monday 21 February marked the Family Day holiday in Canada, the perfect day for parents and children to get together to see a movie, and in this case, break a world record at the same time!
At a Family Day screening of the film “Gnomeo & Juliet” in Toronto, Ontario, eOne Films asked attendees for a different kind of admission price: a full garden gnome costume! If 250 fully dressed gnome-decked movie fans showed up, they would set a new Guinness World Records mark for the largest-ever gathering of people dressed as garden gnomes.
Like any world record, this one was no easy feat, even as a first attempt. In order to count towards the final total, participants had to be wearing the entire costume. For male gnomes, this meant such elements as a beard, tunic and belt, while ladies needed skirts with aprons and suspenders, and everyone was given specially made gnome hats by organisers as they entered the theatre.
Parents, kids and even theatre staff got into the fun as participants gathered in the hour leading up to the screening for games and pictures. As the time for the movie approached, everyone picked up their snacks (never has there been such a crowd of gnomes in search of popcorn!) and headed into the theatre to be counted. In all, 266 enthusiastic gnomes turned out for the event!
In order to qualify for a “largest gathering” record, though, their work was not yet done. Everyone had to stay in the room for a full 10 minutes. This was hardly a problem – guests had a ball dancing to the movie’s soundtrack as the minutes ticked by! Congratulations to all of the new record breakers on their achievement!

I suspect that a decent percentage of the purchases were made by those who have used it only for use on PC projects and might not even own a 360. Plus, that percentage is only going to rise now that Microsoft is actually supporting such things.

Though the name and concept behind Kinect Fun Lab leaked before its keynote, Microsoft showed off three very cool features available in Kinect Fun Labs when it launches for all Xbox 360 users later today.
The first was Xbox Live avatar creation demo called Kinect Me, which lets you snap pictures of your face and clothing with Kinect, and it's rendered as an Xbox Live avatar. It's actually exactly the same thing that Nintendo did with the Mii Maker for 3DS, but the results look a lot more sophisticated, and the clothing-scanning feature adds a bit more depth.
Finger tracking, a feature which MIT hackers showed off on Kinect about six months ago was the second feature shown off on Monday. One of the demonstrations of finger tracking let the user draw in 3D space with his fingertip. The result from the demonstration looked a lot like long-exposure light pen photos. Once completed, images can be uploaded to Kinectshare.com
Finally, Microsoft showed off 3D object scanning, which was pretty much an extension of the avatar creator. With this, the user can hold up an object, and take several pictures of the object's different sides, and a three-dimensional rendering of the object stitches together the images into a 3D model. Microsoft says this can be used to put real-world objects into games.
Some of the demos not shown in the keynote today include: Virtual Conductor, a very Wii Music-esque finger tracking demo, Keyboard anywhere, an invisible musical keyboard demo that was shown off as a hack on the open source Kinect driver several months ago, the rather self-explanatory "Hand Puppets" demo, and a 3D music visualizer.
Kinect is great for playing around with to this is perfect for that.It seems to be like a cross between a game and a dev. kit for the Kinect than anything, giving players a chance to see how Kinect can and will be used in the future, and allowing them to tinker about with, and indeed use, the features and tools via Fun Labs.

Re: Kinect...
My wife took my girls to an out of state wedding last weekend and I had a a large amount of friends from around the country converge at my home for a guys weekend sort of thing. Kinect was played for an entire evening. Every Kinect game I owned was cycled throughout the night. Later, so was my PS Move. Both went over very well.miir wrote:So is anyone still using their Kinect?
I saw a really good deal on one but want to know if people are still use it after the novelty wears off.
I do not play Kinect alone. It's a party game to me, same with Move. A such, I play it every month or so. My girls play Kinect several times a week though. After playing Kinect, my girls get too frustrated having to calibrate and use the Move controller. So, get Kinect if you have people over, or if your significant other or children plays games with you.
Rock band was still king though (by a long shot). You just can't beat 4 people being able to play a game at once in a party setting.
