Undead to lurch through Benson during 3rd annual Zombie Walk
By Josefina Loza
World-Herald Staff Writer
A protruding syringe here, a decapitated head there, dangling eyeballs … whoops, there rolled one.
All will be common sights when the undead take to Benson area streets Saturday for the third annual Zombie Walk.
Headless zombie brides, zombie moms, zombie college graduates and the like should meet between 4 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. at the Waiting Room, 6212 Maple St. At 6 p.m., the walk will begin through the streets of Benson’s business district.
A Zombie Hop will be held from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Waiting Room. A Dr. San Guinary Zombikini beauty pageant and a costume contest will be held at the dance.
The walk is free. The hop is $7 and benefits the Siena-Francis House and Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Last year, 386 zombies participated. Organizers are hoping for more this year.
If you plan to participate, some things to remember: The undead groan, shuffle and lurch. There’s no talking. The only word zombies will say is “Brains!” If you’re attacked — a victim is a willing participant marked with a large X — make sure you carry a pouch of fake blood to splatter across your face and clothes.
Zombie essentials: Cadaver-gray base makeup, even on your lips; brown and gray contouring powder; green and purple bruise accents; blood and “dirt” on your knuckles from crawling out of the grave.
The ickier the costume, the better. Some people spend hours putting on ooey-gooey prosthetics and movie makeup. Others wear temporary tattoos, colored contacts and facial hair.
If you can’t wait until Saturday to get your zombie groan on, head to the Hideout, 320 S. 72nd St., for the Zombie Walk Pre-Party on Friday. The 9 p.m. dance party features live bands, costume contests and prizes. The cover is $5. Information: http://www.myspace.com/zombiewalkomaha.
