Interesting error on my new scanner

Just got my new scanner today, and its going right back to get a replacement...but do anyone have any clue how this error can happen? It looked like this out of the box:

Looks like some sort of water damage to me. At first it just looked like a bunch of ink smeared all over it. Either way, I don't think you'll have problems getting an exchange!

Not sure what it is, but the scanner were packed in the original packaging, inside airtight plastic, when it arrived, thats why im wondering
