Top 40 Singles July 2010

Post by Winnow »

I download and "tried" to listen to these songs. What a collection of crap! No wonder I haven't listened to the radio in many years. It's a combination of half auto-tunes and half mixes that include actual quality songs from the 80's and 90's that no talent ass clowns try to capitalize on.

I knew the current "top 40" songs were bad but didn't realize just how much of a heaping pile of shit they actually are.

I agree. Far too many of those songs have auto tuner all throughout them.

We need another evolution in music. We're over due by my estimation.

For comparison, lets take a look 25 years back 1985:
40) Don Henley - Sunset Grill
39) Heart - What About Love
38) Night Ranger - 4 in the Morning
37) Laura Branigan - Spanish Eddie
36) Hall and Oates w/ Eddie Kendricks & David Ruffin - The Way you do the things you do
35) UB40 w/ Chrissy Hynde - I Got You Babe
34) Katrina and the Waves - Do You Want Crying
33) Bruce Springsteen - I'm Goin Down
32) Loverboy - Lovin Every Minute of it
31) Stevie Wonder - Part Time Lover
30) Tears for Fears - Shout
29) Michael McDonald - I can't hold on
28) Corey Hart - Never Surrender
27) Howard Jones - Life in One Day
26) John Waite - Every Step of the Way
25) Eurythmics - There Must be an Angel
24) The Motels - Shame
23) John Caferty and the Beaver Brown Band - C-I-T-Y
22) Sting - Fortress Around Your Heart
21) Godley & Creme - Cry
20) Jagger & Bowie - Dancing in the Streets
19) Whitney Houston - Saving All my Love For You
18) Motley Crue - Smokin in the Boys Room
17) Aretha Franklin - Freeway of Love
16) Ready for the World - Oh Sheila
15) Billy Joel - You're Only Human
14) John Cougar Mellencamp - Lonely Ol Night
13) Pointer Sisters - Dare Me
12) Bryan Adams - Summer of 69
11) A-Ha - Take on Me
10) Pat Benatar - Invincible
9) Madonna - Dress You Up
8 ) Huey Lewis - The Power of Love
7) Wham! - Freedom
6) Prince - Pop Life
5) Kool and the Gang - Cherish
4) Tina Turner - We DOn't Need Another Hero
3) Phil Collins - Don't Lose My Number
2) Dire Straits - Money for Nothing
1) John Parr - St. Elmos Fire

Keep in mind, this is the "pop" Top 40 but the quality is much much better. Zero Autotunes and very few remakes/remixes. (UB 40 I Got You Babe) is one.

The 80s top 40 was as big a musical shithole as it is today.

I actually like most of the new Eminem cd, it packs a healthy dose of misogyny, and several songs are on that list.

I dislike autotune as much as the next person, but it always cracks me up when people bitch about sampling in music, it really makes your musical ignorance shine through.

Sampling isn't just done because people are too lazy or lack the creativity to come up with their own tune - It still takes plenty of talent to mix and master a song. It's also a way artists pay homage to the artist that they are sampling. This is something that's always been extremely significant in raggae music, and hip hop culture has assimilated a lot of this (along with lots of other pieces of Jamaican culture) over the years.

Now, I have no issue with someone saying they don't like hip hop (or any genre of music), or sampled songs. But claiming that makes it uninspired/bad music is absolutely inocorrect.

As a side note, damn near anything made in the 80's (music, movies, clothes) is complete garbage in my opinion. I seem to be about the only person born in that decade that feels that way, but I do all the same.

Sorry, you were born too late. You had to be born in the 70s to appreciate the 80s and to experience their sheer awesomeness.

There wasn't really anything good about 80's music. Age seems to make anything better I guess.
That list of songs Winnow put up is exactly what was wrong about the time, a lot of artists who had much better music early in their career still hanging on selling because of their name. Those songs are largely the crap of those artists' careers. That's not so say that I listen to any of the dogshit that comes out of the marketing chains these days. Add that to not having the time to search for new music that's independent and you could say I've hit my cap in my lifetime for music I will care about

What have you been smoking? I don't see a lot on there from (at the time) has-been artists who had "much better music early in their career who are still hanging on because of their name."

Since apparently it's "a lot of artists" you feel are contained in that list you wont have a problem listing 10 or more. I can see two or three maybe. Four at most. I think there's more of the opposite of what you said contained in the list with what would be considered the best work of some of those artists.

Wow, sorry to rub you the wrong way but I will list them for the hell of it

Don Henley, Heart, Hall and Oates, Stevie Wonder, Michael McDonald, , John Cafferty, Jagger and Bowie, Phil Collins, and Billy Joel. Not exactly the Best of Bruce Springsteen either. might have been his biggest album, but certainly not song
I wouldn't listen to nearly everything on that list if it came on the radio.

Only thing on that list that I would consider decent is Prince.
Some of the songs have a certain novelty to them but I would probably turn them off after 20-30 seconds.
80s pop music was just as bad as the pop music today.

You auto tune faggots! I can't stand that shit.

This is coming form someone who's favorite groups are Rush, Led Zeppelin and The Kinks, with respect to the Doors, Pink Floyd and Queen. (zero of my top three being American)

That top 40 list from the 80's is untouchable by the crap I posted from present day. I'm talking top 40 to top 40 comparison, not your favorite little emo band or whatever makes you feel like a man or woman.

Focus: Top 40 to Top 40....the 80's list absolutely destroys that auto tuned crap from 2010. I'd rather bust out my eardrums that have to listen to that 2010 Top 40 while I could easily listen to the 80's top 40 and easily recognize it's quality considering it's Top 40 material. Enjoy your Justin Beiber and feat this , feat that, you fruit cakes. So fucking bad.

Nothing there mentions listening to the same music for 20 years and nothing is saying more than the 80's top 40 is much much better than the 2010 "feat" top 40 list. As amazing as it may seem to you, people happen to hear the same song more than once. "could listen" does not mean "always listen" you dolt.

Sorry dude, you're just a dipshit when it comes to music.

That you think garbage like Katrina and the Waves, Loverboy, Night Ranger or Laura Branigan 'destroys' anything is fucking laughable.

I can appreciate how a simpleton like you prefers classic, 4 chord, guitar/bass/drums rock music but thankfully music is progressive and there are artists out there who want to go beyond making music for antisocial shut-ins who sit in thier bedrooms playing air guitar/bass/drums to Rush and Led Zeppelin.

Pop music is marketed to teens.
Anyone who thinks that the vast majority of pop isn't complete shit does not appreciate good music.

Arguing the quality of pop music from decade to decade is as pointless as having a reasonalbe discussion with you about video game consoles or apple products.

My point remains valid. 80's top 40 list is much better than 2010's top 40 feat auto tunes. You can weed out the worst ones and post them if you want but the overall 80's random weekly list dominates today's offerings.

I could care less about your knowledge of emo bands. Posting that craptastic remake video of a bad song made worse by remixing it and adding some random drama scenes shows you're inability to evaluate talent. You also posted some song with a beat ripped off from Blonde Redhead. (23)

It's not valid at all.

80s pop was just as bad as pop music from any decade.
There's so much shit in that 80s list, most of it is poorly written with terrible lyrics and simplistic chord progressions. Not to mention the terrible production values.
I could care less about your knowledge of emo bands.
Who the fuck is even talking about emo bands besides you?

Posting that craptastic remake video of a bad song made worse by remixing it and adding some random drama scenes shows you're inability to evaluate talent.
That progressive music. Rebuilding, remixing and reshaping a upbeat, happy pop song into a dark, tense underground dubstep track.
It's nothing that you have the slightest clue about.

You also posted some song with a beat ripped off from Blonde Redhead
What song would that be?

Music ranked by decade:

1970's Arena, Disco, Metal, Southern, British 71.93
1960's Rock, Hippie, Acid, Retro, SF, British 61.60
1980's Punk, Techno, Metal, Hard rock, Retro, Arena, Glam 49.84
1990's Grunge, Metal 46.10
1950's Sun-sound, Junk blues, Rock-n-roll 30.73
2000's Alternative Rock, Modern Rock 25.55

80's is very respectable and diverse while 2000's blow ass along with the thought that taking a bad song and making it worse is a good thing. If the 80's were so bad, why do half the 2000 song's steal parts of them and then warp them beyond belief Puff Daddy style, making them worse? It's you that knows shit about music. 1980's is where it's at unless you're into the emo/grunge bands. There was some good stuff in the 90's.

Dude, who the fuck are you arguing with.
Nobody thinks that 2000s pop music is any good. It's just as shitty as any other decade... maybe even worse.

You're just making yourself look like a fucking moron trying to argue that 80s pop music actually had any merit.

unless you're into the emo/grunge bands
Again bringing up emo... are you a closet fan of that music or something? You're the only person talking about it.

Pop is pop-pop-popular. Usually written to appeal to the largest number of people. Now and again there will be something solid, but mostly it is what is cool a the time. Since I am not a hip hop or whatnot fan, I don't have an opinion of that side of things, but I can say that the "rock" or "metal" acts out there are definitely ass.

There ya go.

For fuck's sake. Boy George would wipe the floor with any pop star past 2000. Can't you get that through your head?

mmmmm pop, pop, pop music

My point still stands...pop vs pop (I don't care if that's not what you listen to), 80's pop is better and more original than 2010's Auto-tuned garbage.

While I admit I don't check the consistency of my poos (often), I'd assume most are the creamy. Steamy too in weather like we've had lately.

Winnow:

Don't you think it's a little strange to list the prominent musical genres of each decade, and to pass by the 1990's and 2000's without even a mention of rap or hip-hop?

Do you think that your disdain for an entire era-defining genre of music might have something to do with your disdain for just about anything made since the 80s?

Wouldn't it be silly to define the quality of the music of the 60s and 70s solely by the quality of the Big Band albums released during that time? I mean it's just weird to say that the music of the 00s is "alternative rock" and "modern rock." Have you been around these past ten years?

And as for the (shockingly heated) pop music debate: I like the modern list better than the 80's list. That's probably because I sometimes like to go out dancing in shitty drunken clubs, and that's the music they play, and it's fun to dance to. I wasn't going out in the 80's, but if I had, I'm sure I would have liked 80's pop just fine too.

I also found it funny that the 'list' for the 80s included:

Techno which really didn't start growing until the 90s.
Hard Rock which has been around since the early 70s
Glam which was most definitely 70s thing
And ummm... retro? It wasn't called retro in the 80s, it was called pop.

The 80s to me is hair/glam metal, new wave, AOR and shitty pop music.

Yep.

And a big yep to what sueven said. Passing your very narrow, and quite honestly poor taste in music off as some kind of standard is ridiculous, winnow. That being said, it's winnow. He's doing it to be obnoxious. Apparently this is entertaining for him, which makes him a sad, sad man. I guess it's even entertaining for other people at times, which I just plain don't get. Either way, if people would stop responding to his absurd bullshit he might at least cut back on it and stop ruining nearly every active thread on this fucking website.

That's actually a pretty decent top 40.

Some quality artists like Pink, Bruno Mars, Cee Lo, Dre/Eminem, Avril Lavigne and Lady Gaga...

Wow, I cant believe that Avril Lavigne, Eminem and Pink have been around for 10 years.
Lady Gaga looks like she'll have Madonna-like longevity.
Enrique Iglesias has been pumping out hits for 15+ years.
Bruno Mars and Cee Lo Green are both incredibly talented songwriters, singers and performers.

Yeah.. Winnow is just a cranky old bitch.

Eminem is good, at least his much older stuff and his new cd. I actually really like Rihanna, she has a good voice, a unique sound, and she's ultra sexy. Cee Lo is definitely great, he was good in Goodie Mob back in the day, and his solo stuff is really good. His first solo cd (Cee Lo Green and his perfect imperfections) is one of my favorite cds. Dr. Dre's cd finally coming out is awesome, he's always been great.

That's about it for me on that list. Wacka Flocka Fag is most likely the worst rapper of all time. I bet a dollar you can't even get yourself to listen to a entire song of his.
