Modnation Racers

Post by Fairweather Pure »

At first, I wasn't excited about this at all. Then I watched some videos and changed my mind. Then I read some reviews and my excitment dropped a couple of notches and decided to wait for a sale instead of paying full price day 1. Then, I saw it on sale yesterday and did an impulse buy...

Great game. So much better than what I was expecting. The racing is pretty tight. It adds some improvements over the mario kart system, including drafting and the boost meter. Your boost meter is multifunctional so instead of just going faster, you can also use the energy offensively for ramming other cars or defensively to create a sheild around yourself. The tracks are nice and varied. The level of customization is off the charts for your avatar and kart. There are already tons of user made tracks to play through. The graphics are really nice too. The central "hub" is filled with dozens of other players as everyone scoots around toward what they want to do. You can DL the avatar/kart of anyone you see. It has a "top 3" dispayed for avatars and karts that you can drive up and DL. Top 3 racers were Spiderman, Mario, and Iron Man. All spot on recreations. I don't remeber the top 3 karts, but I know the A-Team van was one of them. I heard people have already recreated the mario kart tracks too. To customize your avatar and kart, you get a basic set of tools but also unlock items and such by completing challanges during races. Think LBP-style of unlocks. Very cool and gives a reason to do certian types of things on tracks. I played for about 4 hours last night. Half that time was customizing my kart and avatar!

The only con is a big one. It's one I've read about but was still in no way prepared for... LOADING TIMES SUCK ASS. Seriously. It's embarrassing. I could start a race and while it loaded I had time to go out into the living room and change a dvd for my kids. I started another race and had time to go take a leak. It's easily the worst I have seen this generation. Word is, a patch should be out shortly to address the issue, but goddamn it's a pretty large blight on an otherwise fantastic game. I fell asleep last night while waiting on a track to load.

I'm very impressed overall. I'm realy glad I didn't pass this one by.

If only the PS3 allowed you to install games on the hard drive... Might not have had to wait on a patch.

The reason it's probably on sale is because not a lot of people bought it when they heard about the loading times. Poor sales, in other words.

I had to try 3 EB Games today before I found a copy.

The AI in this game is fucking insane. There is rubber banding and cheap shots galore. It's absolutely rage inducing.

I heard the same thing about Split/Second. Or Blur. Or maybe both of them. I'm not sure why developers of racing games need to do lame stuff like that. Regardless I'll probably skip all three. I'm not really a big fan of racing games in general.

It's like the AI ignores every other racer on the track. It's not everyone vs everyone else, it's you vs 11 AI opponents. It's a noticable difference! During single player, the offensive capabilities of your boost meter are pretty moot since you basically have to use it exclusively for shielding yourself from attack after attack.

Yeah fair, I know what you mean. It's so fucking frustrating to be kicking everyone's ass for the first two and a half laps just to get hit by 5 missles 1/4 lap from the finish line. I'm all for the weapons and shit, but they need to tone the amount of sheer luck and frustration involved down, it should be mostly your mastery of the driving mechanics that wins you races.

I beat the campaign last night. A few of the races sucked major balls. I got through the first two circuits plus a couple races getting all three objectives, but stopped trying after that. I'll go back and try and do it at some point but some of them are going to be well beyond frustrating.

Welcome to the Mario Kart school of AI and difficulty, where CPU racers actually slow down to fuck with you and make sure you don't ever crawl out of the basement. My wife has been playing this, in between bursts of Red Dead, and its the most profanity I have heard out of her over a game since the last time The Corps wiped to Tunare. She is having fun, though, but its deffinately rage inducing. I think the best tre to life racing AI I ever played has to have been the first Motorstorm.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

I've played very little of the single player.
The online races are so much more fun.

Spent a couple hours making a track last night. I'm almost ready to publish it but there are some glitchy issues with one of the jumps I need to fix. I'm going to require all you bitches to download and rate it so I can get that trophy :)

I can do that. Just let us know the details.

I'm almost finished with my VV themed kart. I'm also designing an Xbox themed car called "Miir's Tears".
