notice any particular lag problems or packet loss?

i'm looking to set up a wireless LAN at home, specifically using D-Link stuff.

was wondering if anybody had any positive/negative experiences that would be relevant.

Ive got the setup at home. Im hard wired to the hob/router while my wife is wireless. She doesnt experience any more or less lag than I do, and I actually get dropped more than she does = P.

I cant recall the specific hardware other than the router is Linksys, 4 port hard wired w/ wireless. p/n bsfr_somethingorother

Distance + LOS is a factor though. My daughter has a PC in her room with crap connectivity, that is the same distance as my wife's PC from the router, but the crappy connection is obstructed by a few walls, where the good wireless connection has little in the way of the line of sight.

I was going to ask almost the same question, I've been looking at 802.11g routers. I was less than impressed with D-Link and Linksys in the past, though I've heard they improved quite a bit in the last couple years. I've had really good luck with NetGear, but they don't support the standard yet.

802.11a is too expensive, and 802.11b is too slow for other stuff I do. None of the "name brand" companies seem to support 802.11g yet. I'll likely start working from home soon, and my switch is full :( Wireless seemed a decent option since the prices have come down.

The wireless portion has more to do with the location of the wireless NIC from the WAP, and what obstructions there are between them than anything else. With good connectivity to the base station, there will be zero issues with EQ.

Ideally, you want to get NICs (Network interface cards) and a WAP (wireless access points) that support both 802.11A and 802.11B.

802.11A will cover a shorter distance and be more susceptible to interference from obstructions such as walls etc. It operates in the 5Ghz radio band, uses 8 radio channels and has a maximum link rate of 54Mbps per channel. The maximum user throughput will be approximately half of 54Mbps, and will be shared with all of the users on the same radio channel. The data rate decreases as the distance between the NIC and the WAP increases.

802.11B will cover longer distances and be less susceptible to interference and obstructions at the cost of a slower data rate. It operates in the 2.4 Ghz radio band, uses 3 radio channels and has a maximum link rate of 11Mbps. The maximum throughput will be approximately half of 11Mbps, and will be shared with all the users on the same radio channel. Again, the data rate decreases as the distance between the NIC and the WAP increases.

Having hardware that supports both standards is ideal because it gives you versatility with your client devices. Even if your connection were 802.11B and only giving you 4 Mbps reliably, you would still have more than enough bandwidth to play EQ, email, web browsing, etc. and I doubt you'd ever experience lag due to your wireless products.

Good luck.

I use a linksys here at home and have had no problems with 802.11b. I've wandered around the house playing eq on my laptop to see if I noticed any problems and experienced no issues at all.

I haven't put them into the kids pc's yet but hopefully pretty soon I'll be able to cut all this cat5 that I ran under the house.
