Gaming Mouse suggestions

Post by Funkmasterr »

I want to get a new mouse, particularly for WoW. I have known for a long time that clicking everything is absurd and I need to start using more keyboard macros or mouse buttons. I have been looking into the different options and I'm unsure of which I should go for.

I looked at a few of the Logitech options, including the G9, but I don't believe it's got enough buttons for what I'm looking for. I think I want a minimum of 5 buttons on the mouse, not including the two standard buttons.

This lead me to Razer mice, and they look and sound pretty nice, but I'm unsure of which of their models would be best. Basically does anyone use these or know of another mouse that may be better that's similar?

I'm using a G5000 atm. It has 3 side button, plus scroll wheel button with left/right clicking. It's really nice mouse, very pleased with it, but it may not have enough buttons for you. There's always the Razer Naga with it's 27 buttons or whatever.

I'm not sure, I wish I could kinda experiment with them before I drop the money.. Cause it seems like it would help to be able to, at the very least, have my top 5 used abilities in combat be mapped to a button. Then again, maybe not. Maybe just a few would be more useful and set up macros for the rest. Having a tough time deciding on this one.

I also have a G15 keyboard and love it. I will not buy another item from Steelseries ever again. I bought their "WoW" mouse and it sucks. Their support is horribad.

There's only one real option, and it was suggested above. Tis why I played such a nasty good warrior in pvp.

The Naga.

If you don't get the Naga, you're wrong. It can even be thrown around after a rage fueled, hard fought loss and still maintain its livelihood. The button layout promotes efficient use of macros. The thing was made for WoW. The included software is top-notch. Enjoy!

Yeah I thought that one might win out when I was comparing them all. The only thing I was concerned about is buttons getting hit when you're just resting your thumb.

The button response is exactly what it should be. Still, I made sure to program the most harmless buttons under where my thumb rests.

2 hander / 1 hander+shield switchers.

And a clothing removal + dance macro.

That mouse looks fucking terrible.

Image

edit: forgot to mention, it's a logitech g3

That's what I use. And have been using for about 5 years. And prior to that one, I used the first generation version.

It's essentially an ambidextrous mouse, the button you see on the left there is also on the right. I like it because I don't like for all of my shit to be on the left hand side, which is how most mice are designed. I also like that the scroll wheel doesn't have the left / right functionality that a lot of mice seem to have.

I probably use my mouse more than your average WoW player (I mouse-over heal with Grid / cli.que, which is how any not-terrible healer should, by the way) and so having a mouse that fits me is essential. I simply haven't found one better than the g3.

It's also pretty god damn cheap.

One could say that it has too few buttons... it has enough for me because with Cli.que bindings I use shift / ctrl modifiers. But outside of mouse-over healing, why the fuck do you need like 12 buttons on your mouse, seriously?

edit again: the fnord thing is still there? really?

Well, here's my logic:

Playing a feral druid, I have a pretty shitty rotation, and it requires my attention pretty much constantly. Up until this point, I have been mouse clicking my action bars, so it's a miracle I'm the unstoppable badass in dps that I am, or at least so I hear.

Using the numpad isn't a option for me, as I use my mouse to turn, etc and always need a hand on it. Using the number keys on the top of the keyboard also isn't a option as I need to have my fingers on wasd all the time for movement as well.

This basically leaves the mouse. I need at least half a dozen buttons for my rotation stuff (the rest I can click), hence why I'm looking at that mouse. I'm pretty sure I'll get the one leonaerd posted above, but I'll probably wait as my desire to play WoW has been dwindling after 4 months of wipes in the plague wing. Once I get that drive to play more again I'll pick that mouse up.

This wouldn't replace your mouse, but an iPad could be programed as a wicked/hella (your choice) cool launch pad with all of your MMORPG command/macro needs. I already used the iPhone as a supplement to Photoshop for selecting various tools, etc...with the larger iPad, it would be perfect for gaming secondary screen for touch commands.

Pvp. Honestly, it would be nice if there were 16 or 20 buttons. I could go into specifics if you're (bike)curious.

You should just quit now, save your monthly fee and the pain endured in a dying game, and milk Red Dead Redemption until The Old Republic comes out. :D

This is what I am still using and it is the Holy Grail of mice. It is a 10 button programmable cordless for the ultimate in gaming and porn satisfaction. I had that paired up with my G15 for EQ2 until I realized it was overkill and went with the MX1000 and a Saitek. Moved the G15 to my boxed warden for all the macro healing goodness.

My newest addition has been adding an Xbox controller to my PC for 1st person shooter type games. So much easier for me and still get the option to use the keyboard/mouse if needed.

That's nice but it's only 800dpi and I had issues with the thumb rest while gaming.

This is the holy grail, hard to find (if still exists) 2000dpi wireless G7!

Image

Sleek, wireless with high DPI ...and the fucking mouse feet...oh my lord do they rock, like girls in tube socks!

Image

smoothest mouse feet....EVAH! Combined with a nice mousepad, the G7 glides like some frictionless miracle straight out of a Sci Fi novel.

I liked that mouse a lot.
I had 2 of them!
My only complaint is that the battery life is poor.

Really? I have had mine since I think 2004 and the battery has been good. I do keep it on the charging stand religiously, but it will definitely last 10+ hours without a charge. Have the models since that one been better in your experience with battery life?

The DPI on it has never been an issue for the gaming that I do on the PC. If anything, it has spoiled me a bit with the buttons. I could get by with a well laid out 8 button mouse as there are 2 buttons I rarely used on this setup, but I don't think I would buy one to replace it with less than that. It has been the most comfy mouse I have ever used by far.

I added this to my order for a DS for my kid. Get my total over the $250 mark to get the 6 mo interest free. It should be arriving today. I'm looking forward to playing with it tonight.

I have a similar experience. I am still using the MX1000 I bought many years and it still holds a charge for at least 5 days and I use it a lot. I wish they still made them because I would buy another. I found a few at different online retailers but as they haven't been made for a few years the battery probably isn't in great shape.

I bought them at the same time so I must have got them from the same batch of poor batteries.

I destroyed my MX1000 in a fiery rage during a particularly bad round of Battlefield 2. But it was a great mouse up until then. It's difficult to find mice that are large enough for my big hands and heavy enough for easy, precise movements (a la sniping).

And Winnow's right about the feet on that other mouse. Naired balls and vaseline soaked strippers don't have shit on that smooth, buttery glide.

Over a year later my MX1000 is still holding on. The battery, if I actually let it fully charge, gives me a good 4-5 days of use. I wish they still made these! It will be a sad day when it finally dies and I have to buy a new mouse.

Loving the G700 (sorry for the huge picture)

It's funky looking for sure but:

-feels great

-uber high, on the fly, adjustable wireless dpi up to 5700 dpi

-monster mouse feet which I've always raved about as being important for a smooth ride

-best ever 7 buttons, 4 on side and three on top, ergonomically shaped for easy twitch feel control (unlike that 12 button side mouse monstrosity)

-click or freewheel scrolling, on the fly adjustable. Both modes have their uses.

-wireless dedicated usb thingy, not unified for better wireless performance (had absolutely ZERO issues with wireless and performance)

-rechargeable, no battery switching. USB cord goes into front of mouse so it acts like a wire mouse in an emergency where you forgot to charge over the past few days and recharging is fast.

Logitech has their shit together with this mouse. The only issue...and persistent issue, I've had with logitech mice is the eventual double clicking issue as the delicate click mechanical device wears out on them. I think they've finally improved that as my last G7 mouse held out a long time. (several years of daily intense use by me)

Those funny looking buttons you see are highly useful in games. As a tank, I used them for targeting, marking, snaring, switching on mobs, all very effectively. You have to try out the feel of the mouse yourself to see how well thought out the side buttons are. Your thumb can rest below them comfortably and when in use, you place your thumb in between the four buttons and can feel them all and can kind of just roll your thumb back and forth or up and down to easily trigger them, but they have solid feedback at the same time and don't misfire easily. Same with the top three buttons. You can rest finger comfortable inside the buttons. When using the top three buttons, the unique feel of the curved buttons makes it easy to feel which one you're pressing.

The software that comes with it is easy to configure and you had have 5 presets stored in the mouse for various games and other uses.

The mouse gets my triple snaps bad-ass banana award. I've bought them for others. Love the feel of it. (perfect middle ground between G7 and MX1000) I use the Mx Performance mouse and G700 side by side as my iMac uses the MX Performance and the button placement feels so off on the MX and thumb groove too deep once you've used the G700.

a "ratpad" was the greatest addition I made for my gaming mouse. Using a G9x with it now.

http://www.ratpadz.com/

I'm sure there's a forum or two out there with a discount code or something, but it was the best 15 or 20 bucks I ever spent. I think i have had this for 5 years now, still looks the same, maybe a little wear on the surface. I have NEVER seen/felt anything come close to the "slickness" between this and a mouse. Was just as awesome with my MX1000, till it died :(
