Darksiders = Zelda-esque

Bayonetta = Pure action game

It's a very tough choice. However, you only have a PS3, so the answer is obviously Darksiders!

If I had to choose between the 2, I would look at my collection and see what genre I have less of. That would mean that Darksiders wins by default because I have 2 other action games (Ninja Gaiden 2 and DMC4) and nothing comparable to Darksiders. Of course, if you buy them both at Toys R Us, you get a 40$ gift card. So do that! Then again, my answer is always "just get them both", so perhaps I'm the wrong person to be giving advice on game purchases. You should probably ignore Funk too for the same reason

What Fair said. If I was debating, I'd just get them both.

I hadn't really heard much about either one to be honest and was going to ignore them both, but after you guys talking about them I may pick up Darksiders. Bayonetta looks cool and all, but those types of games never kept me interested for that long, too repetitive and not much to them.

Let the queue for 2010 begin.

I have a ton of new games I own I have to get through before I even THINK of getting new stuff.

Loving Brutal Legend which is my current project. I love what Shafer has done here blending styles into something really unique. The humor and the soundtrack are really spectacular too.

I should really do what you said and finish all the games I have before I buy more, but knowing me that probably won't happen :)

P.S. I'm trying to figure out how something could be not only good, but humorous - with Jack Black in it. It's almost as if you are telling me up is down.

A guy I work with picked up Bayonetta and we're swapping when we finish 'em.

I wish I'd bought Bayonetta instead.

Who the fuck would want to play this game with God Of War collection out now and GoW3 coming out in a couple of months.
It's not a terrible game but I have yet to see one single original concept or gameplay element. The lead charaters name is War, for fuck sakes.

I had more fun playing the Bayonetta demo than I did playing this stupid game for 2 hours.

I played both for about an hour each last night and I would have to say Darksiders has it's hooks into me more than Bayonetta. That is actually the opposite order of what I had hyped my brain to want. The cutscenes in Bayonetta make absolutely no sense. The actual gaming portion is top notch though!

From what I have played of Darksiders, I'm impressed. I see why it's gotten so many great reviews. It's a nice world they've created. And yes, there is a patch due out to address the screen tearing. It will vary in severity based on the refresh rate of your TV, so some will see a lot, others may not see any at all.

If you pile al of those games together, the choice gets even harder. Of course, I plan on getting them all!

The little I've seen of Bayonetta didn't interest me. It's like Devil May Cry with stupid weird Japanese Anime type cut scenes that are just weird for the sake of being weird, and make zero sense, which is fucking stupid.

I played Darksiders last night for a couple of hours (decided to get it on the PS3) and I love it. What the fuck is it with you people expecting every movie and game that comes out to be not only totally original, but a new standard... it's really, really obnoxious, to be honest, as well as unrealistic and unfair.

The game is very similar to God of War, and that's a perfectly good thing in my opinion. BUT WAIT, WHATS WITH HIM BEING CALLED WAR, I MEAN THATS TOOOOTALLY A RIP OFF OF GOD OF WAR AND TOTALLY NOT ONE OF THE FUCKING FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCOLYPSE!@!!!@#!

The game play is smooth, the graphics are pretty damn good, and the controls work really well. I am also a fan of them not doing the stupid quicktime events that God of War shoves down your throat every 45 seconds. So far the voice acting has all seemed very good and the voices match up with the characters. I'm really looking forward to opening some more of the moves/weapons up so I can get a little more in depth with the combat system.

I would highly recommend getting this game if you are a fan of God of War type games and don't have a sandy vagina.

Bayonetta makes fun of it's genre.
It also brings a lot of new and fun gameplay elements to the table.

The game is very similar to God of War, and that's a perfectly good thing in my opinion
It looks great, the animations are smooth, the environments look fantastic and the production values are top notch.
But everything about the game is God of War.
When you kill an enemy, you collect orbs.
Some are for health, some are 'currency', some are for 'mana'.
You can spend your currency orbs on upgrades like special attacks, combos, power, etc.
There are also collectibles that can be used to 'buy' other upgrades.
You wear an enemy down and a little flashing button prompt pops up over their head. You push that button and you perform a finishing move.

The first two levels seemed to have mini, GOW style cut scenes every 20 seconds.. you know the ones where the camera pans across, stops then random enemies pop up out of the ground or something falls and blocks your path or some crap (that you can climb) starts growing on a wall.

Also, it feels like they made combos unnecessarily esoteric.
There's no way anyone could possibly memorize even half of those moves or use them effectively... and playing at normal difficulty, there doesn't really seem to be any need to have more than just a couple special moves in your repitoire.

I had pretty low expectations for this game and I can't help but feel let down.
Other than the graphics and high production values, nothing really stands out in this game.

I don't know how this game brings a lot of new gameplay elements to the table.. It just took them from a bigger number of games (bullet witch, dmc, etc.).

As far as the combos, I'm just making sure you aren't listing that as a difference between it and God of War.. because it is exactly the same way with God of War... They do it so that people that want to get more into the game and the harder difficulties have a large arsenal of moves (if you've played the harder difficulties you know you need them) and people that want to play on easy/normal don't have to bother.

I just fail to see how you can say a game is well done, but be disappointed in it because it's like other games in it's genre.. Seems absurd to me.

GOW has a fair number of combos but the button/stick combos aren't nearly as unintuitive as in Darksiders.

Give it a rest, Funk.
Just accept the fact that we disagree.
Neither of us is right or wrong.

I'm just disappointed that this game didn't even try to bring anything new to the genre.
There's a deluge of God Of War type games that have been released recently (or in a few months).. and in my opinion, God of War does God of War a lot better than Darksiders or Dante's Inferno.

I understand we disagree, but you are practically contradicting yourself within the same post so I'm trying to understand here.

BTW, the bolded text is a complete falsehood. I would be willing to bet I have played the God of War games more extensively than everyone else here combined. I've played the first game probably 30+ times through. The combos are almost exactly the same thing, actually Darksiders is a little more intuitive/easy for some (just holding down attack instead of hitting attack three times quick in GoW).

I'll get them all and rank them after I play them. After putting in more time on Bayonetta this morning...goddamn that's a good game!

I think my overall ranking (which will likely change) will be:

1. Darksiders
2. Bayonetta
3. GoW3 and Dante's Inferno - tied!

All 4 are AAA titles IMO and you can't go wrong with any of them.

GoW3 and DI are carbon copies as far as gameplay, so the environments, enemies, and story will determine the winner for me personally. The could very well shoot up to the top by the time I'm done playing them.

And Miir, some of your complaints are a bit strange IMO. The amount of combos in Darksiders pales in comparison to Bayonetta. That's just a warning if that causes you concern. Aslo, you complain that Darksiders is too much like GoW for your liking, when GoW 3 is going to be nothing but the exact same formula as the previous 2 and you seem ok with that! You may just not care for Darksiders and that's fine. I'm not going to champion the game. However, you should realize that you're in the minority on that opinion!
These mechanics have all been used well before GoW was even thought of. You need to play more games if you believe GoW has a lock on any single one of those mechanics, much less all of them!

I've played the GOW3 demo and it's head and shoulders above Darksiders and Dante's Inferno.

The amount of combos in Darksiders pales in comparison to Bayonetta
I don't consider Bayonetta an action/adventure game like GOW.
It is first and foremost a fighting game like Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry.

These mechanics have all been used well before GoW was even thought of.
God of War polished and perfected those gameplay elements which is why it was universally lauded as one of the best games ever.

Who knows, I might start liking Darksiders more as I get further into the game but my first impression was pretty disappointing. I'm still kicking myself for getting it instead of Bayonetta (which I will be picking up later today)

I was mildly disappointed in the God of War 3 demo, to be perfectly honest. The graphics were extremely sub par, and the flying part at the end was one of the dumbest most tedious things I've encountered in a game. I really hope the final product doesn't leave me feeling the same way because I love the first two games..

Have you played the Dante's Inferno Demo? Just curious how you liked that compared to the GoW3 demo. I put them as equal. Both were fantastic IMO, but you gotta admit that the gameplay has all been done before. The 2 games just do more of it all over again with better graphcs.

I've heard this from a couple of different sources and it's my understanding that the demo we played is like, a year old (which makes sense). Many improvements are slated to go into the final product before release. I have a feeling it's going to look better than the demo when everything is said and done.

I got a little frustrated with that demo, to be honest. I got to a point where a wall went up and I kept getting attacked by these ghosts, and they just kept coming. Couldn't figure out how to get past it, got annoyed and shut it off. I think I'll still end up getting it but I am interested to see the reviews.

This isn't Avatar.

It's ok to have a game be almost exactly like another game and still be good.

God of War didn't impress me. ooo, time to hit the little triangle button that popped on the screen! ooo, now it's time to hit the little square button that popped on the screen! Pause for a lame nude scene...ooo time to this the little round button that poopped up on the screen!

Bayonetta and Darksiders did impress me. Both are excellent games. It would be unfortunate for the nitpicking on this thread to cause someone not to buy either one. God of War is the Wal Mart of these games. Bayonetta and Darksiders if for those that can reach beyond the biggest seller and enjoy quality games that aren't necessarily hyped to the moon. (well these two were hyped but not as much as GoW)

I totally agree. Both are excellent games. They both have great Metacritic scores, with the only faults being kind of nit-picky and are on the technical side of things. If the year is starting out this strong, I think gamers are in for one hell of a year in terms of sheer quantity of high quality games. If these had come out a week sooner, they both would've been in many people's GotY for 2009.

My backlog shall continue to runnith over...

Dante's in HELL!

Dante's Inferno looks like the closest to being the same game as God of War. It very well could be better than God of War but the same people that orgasmed over the mere mention of the name, "Playstation 3" when it was released, that were unable to see past the name to get a grip on how bad the PS3 really was, and still is in many ways, won't be able to accept Dante's Inferno over their beloved GoW3 marketing blindness.

Haven't played Dante's or GoW3 so can't comment yet.

If you haven't played them Winnow, let me explain the similarities: Everything.

Dante's Inferno is GoW with what amounts to almost a simple pixel swap. All of thd buttons do the same things in each game, from fighting to opening chests/doors. DI adds in a light/dark chart system, but it doesn't reinvent the wheel.

That's why I'm confused why Miir can fawn all over GoW and say DI went from a day 1 release after playing the demo. It's the same goddamn game, lol! I can't fathom the leap of logic!

Took about 45 minutes for Darksiders to really "click" with me. It only gets better from there IMO. The game really opens up.

Not if you don't live in the US.

There's always gameaccess.ca in Canada however at 17$/mo for 1 game out I find them really expensive.

Well considering one of those people was the originator of this post I thought it relevant to the discussion.

Were they on fire? Near as I could tell you had to use the Beatrice thingie (O button) which put out the fire then you could bonk the charred bodies with the sword or whatever.

Anyway... Having never played a GoW game can't really say I care for this type of game to be honest. It's just button mashing for the most part but you can also do combos. Oooo! Graphics looked nice but I think I'll be skipping DI, GoW3, Bayonetta and whatever else coming out that's basically the same thing.

I think Dante is too dark, Darksiders is too bright and cartoony, Bayonetta is too weird and japanese (jazz and pop-music??), i'll prolly wait for GOW3! :D
