Obama's speech to students

Post by Lalanae »

I am simply amazed at how many "parents" (and I use that term oh-so-loosely) are all worked up over Obama giving a speech to students about personal responsibility in school. At least at our neighbor's kid's school, a PERMISSION SLIP is required for the kids to see the speech.

WTF? I remember presidential speeches in school. The speech is about education and student responsibility, nothing political, but some people are actually accusing Obama of trying to indoctrinate their children with socialized ideologies (not that these rednecks used those exact words...)

The Facebook updates from some aquaintances and relatives have me nauseus, especially considering I don't hold shit back when people start talking nonsense. Oh well, I didn't have much use for those people anyway :P

I remember being at school and having the teacher tune in the radio to listen to the President on several occassions.

I'm in the same situation with Facebook. Also, people are flipping out over the Gardasil vaccine at the momment. It's hard to stay silent! I don't really need to know how many of my friends are just plain ignorant.

Our school is sending home permission slips. I went berserk at the teacher meeting this afternoon. I teach in southern Illinois, and I'm pretty sure I'm the only one teaching there who voted for Obama. Despite that fact, debate was split halfway down the center. The unfortunate thing is, we are doing state testing next week, so most teachers used that as their excuse for not running the feed.
Permission slips to hear the fucking president give an address on education. Why the fuck would he politicize it? It's addressed to KIDS. They can't fucking vote. How the hell is he going to indoctrinate little Timmy when he has 30 minutes to do it, over a television?
I love where I live in Illinois, and I love the people who live here, but fuck me if they aren't stupid sometimes.

This whole thing sounds retarded. I lament the state of politics up here (it's looking more and more likely like we're having another election this fall), however this is nothing on the retard scale like the shitstorm the GOP is causing over this.

Have people forgotten what it is to be a kid nowadays? Most of them will probably be doodling, texting, picking their noses or sleeping through this anyways.

Trying to brainwash kids early. Republicans get equal time with kids if Obama gets to speak to them for deprogramming!

Oh sort of like when Bush 1 did it all those years ago and none of the Republicans complained at all?

Talk about missing the point, of literally everything.

Why would republicans complain if Bush talked to kids?

George W. Bush shouldn't even be allowed to speak to adults, let alone schoolchildren.

Weren't preschoolers reading to him in Fla. when 9/11 happened? I thought I remembered he couldn't respond until they finished their story...

Here's a long 10 minute clip of Bush with the school kids

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IedVRYUNWUU

The teacher seems kinda bitchy. I wouldn't want her as my teacher.

Bush wasn't pushing a political agenda like Obama. Even before he was told about the attack, he sat patiently through a really boring spelling/verbal/reading lesson.

So Winnow, Obama did some major agenda pushing today.

"Study hard" was obviously a reference to the need for socialized health care.

“The future of America depends on you’’ = gun control now and forever.

“At the end of the day, the circumstances of your life – what you look like, where you come from, how much money you have, what you’ve got going on at home – none of that is an excuse for neglecting your homework or having a bad attitude,’’ the president said. “That’s no excuse for talking back to your teacher, or cutting class, or dropping out of school. There is no excuse for not trying.’’ = abortions for most, welfare for the rest

------

So thinking about this whole situation makes me very frustrated. I can't help but think that this misguided, misplaced anger and suspicion towards Obama is working. Everyone should really stop watching 24-hour news networks. But things like this and all the health care BS have really gotten to me. It makes me mad that a large segment of the population either cannot or refuses to wade through the bull shit. they believe everything they hear as long as it is anti-Obama. I know a lot of people don't want help from the government in any fashion, but this is really leading to the dumbing down of America.

The second thought that comes to mind is why didn't Democrats do this. I am almost envious of how the Republicans have been able to dominate the debate, and in effect nearly set the agenda for this democrat dominated government. With the large majorities in place I feel like legislation I could get behind should be flying through both houses and Obama's pen should be running dry signing progressive bills.

Another thing: Why didn't democrats pounce on the word fascism like republicans pounced on socialism. There were/are definite tinges of bolth in each administration. Bush gave Dems so much ammo, and they for the most part shot blanks.

Today it seems like all you have to do is say something wacky, throw in a few buzz words (socialist, communist, terrorist) and finish with "it's un-American!" and bam you get marquee press coverage. And this is applied to pretty much every thing Obama touches. to me this school speech is the worst so far, because it is so benign, so unimportant. yet still, it gave the media hordes a chance to put ma and pa trailer trash on the tv sets and in the newspapers of pretty much every market across the U.S. accusing Obama of attempting to hypnotize their borderline retarded son into becoming a socialist.

i just want to shake the shit out of them and tell them to grow up. sheesh

If it weren't so disturbing, it would be fucking hillarious.

I mean from an outside persepctive I find it sad that so many Americans can be so easily obfuscated by pundits on the right that they actually believe that their elected president is their biggest enemy. It's just depressing that so many people are so fucking stupid that they believe every idiotic talking point that is shoved into their tiny brainless head.

Even that is misleading. Fox News won the ratings table by three times the margin to MSNBC. No one even watches CNN anymore. Newspapers are dying, and the two big online giants (Huff, Drudge) are split down the middle. The 'left leaning' media doesn't exist.

On a slightly similiar note - It's embarrassing as a vaguely intelligent person to watch the Republicans reaction to this particular speech - http://www.politico.com/blogs/glennthru ... u_lie.html

It's just embarrassing for anyone who considers themselves to be a right leaning fiscal and social conservative to watch these clowns act like shills for the insurance companies they so evidently represent (well...that or they are just contrary for reasons little other than to be "alternative") It's also funny how fucking uniformly visibly predictable these cunts are. Right wing white haired suited shills each and every one of them. Suck Satans cock! HUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH GIVE IT TO ME SATAN GIVE IT TO ME HARDDDDDDD DDEATH PANELSSSSS RIGHT INSIDE MEEEEE HURT ME EVIL LORD

Pathetic.

I was listening to Ron and Fez (an XM radio show) and the host Ron made some great points. Obama has failed miserably in selling this to the American people. He has been outdone by the Republicans when they are their weakest and if I had any real criticism of Obama that would be it. He has failed to "rally the troops" and use his majority power.

Ron's point was that Obama should have taken a different tact with selling this concept. Everyone is fine with the government subsidizing Police and Fire services. The main reason for this is prevention. We want firemen to prevent a fire from destroying other houses. Our houses. The one on fire is lost, but their job is prevention of other losses. Same with police. We want them to find the criminals and prevent them from doing it again.

Obama should have pointed out that this insurance plan was similar in scope. If there is a potential for a global pandemic, or even a US outbreak of a deadly disease, it will most likely affect those without insurance first. If it is allowed to grow because those people do not have access to medical services, it may reach a point where it won't matter if the people insured get help, the disease will have spread too severely. Obviously this is a simplified version of what he explained, but it is a great concept.
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. For the people who even bother to go through that, most assholes just accept what it is anyway and get on with it." - John Lennon
