Changing platforms (AMD > Intel)

I had a pleasant surprise this weekend. I had to replace my motherboard, in doing so I went from an Nvidia(?) chipset to Intel, everything auto-installed perfectly when I brought the system back up. Just swapped all the components over to a new Intel branded board. Last time I did something like that it blew up and I had to re-install XP to get it running again.

My question is, what's going to happen in a similar situation, as when going from an AMD CPU to Intel?

AMD to Intel will blow up guaranteed. When Windows is installed, I believe it installs the version of the kernel compiled for the current processor in the machine.

If you swap the processor, Windows will start making CPU calls that the processor doesn't understand and the machine will crash in all sorts of in-elegant ways.

*edit* Waitaminute... You have an intel-branded board with an AMD processor? Normally you can't fit an Intel CPU in a board made for AMD chips and vice-versa. I haven't built a system in a few years but I do remember that factoid quite clearly.

Different system, should've pointed that out :)

It's my wife's XP2500+ that was just fine until we started playing LoTRO. It was even OK with that until we made it to Moria, which buries it on low settings.
