Never been to DC or a gay gig. I was raised in Florida and spent some time in Hawaii, El Paso and Kuwait. The heat doesn't bother me.

but while ur in DC make sure u check out some of the cool stuff =D

ps. also stay out of south east DC

They put pictures in the papers from gay march in St Pete a few weeks ago, probably set them back a few years with the general public. Fat men in sailor suits re-enacting the WWII sailor kissing a girl scene from NYC + other images splashed on the front page aren't doing anything for their community.

I think it's funny to see some of the "wild & crazy" stuff at pride events, and I don't really understand why people get so squeamish out about people letting loose and having a little fun on "their day." That's kind of the point, after all - to unashamedly, perhaps confrontationally, be themselves. That being said, I'd be surprised if the march in D.C. turned into an over the top freak-fest that people more often associate with large metropolitan pride celebrations (the one around here is so tame it could be shown on Nickelodeon or Disney). This is a serious protest event to denounce institutionalized discrimination (DOMA, DADT, adoption rights, immigration rights, etc.), and I would be somewhat surprised if the participants are not more reserved and serious than they might be for a party.

Don't worry, though. As it does with everything else, the media will pick out the most salacious, scandalous bits and fixate on them so that they and their readers/viewers/listeners completely miss the overarching point.

That's what sells ad space, in that particular case they didn't print the weirdest stuff.

After Sueven's explanation a while back I can understand why they're doing it, still don't think they're doing themselves any favors though.

What do gay people say about a gay club when they don't like it? I've hear people say "that's gay" in a derogatory way. Even in a derogatory way, you can't really say "That gay club is gay". Is there a derogatory term for heteros that gay people use?

That shirt makes me think of the Seinfeld episode "Not that there is anything wrong with that."

Heh, I wasn't going to mention it at all, but the first thing I thought of when I saw that t-shirt is actor/comedian Hal Sparks, who goes out of his way to make sure that everyone knows he was merely playing a gay character on Queer As Folk, and is in no way, absolutely not in any fashion, unequivocally, NOT a fan of the penis - oh, and he's not gay either. I'm not saying that's your intent, Spang, but perceptions don't necessarily care about what reality intended.

If you want a message T, maybe a simple HRC logo would do?

I like the shirt. It identifies his perspective and has a catchy logo. People need to realize it isn't just homos that are against all the mistreatment.

granted depending on what genre of gay bar it is you could say other things, such as going to omega (dirty old man gay bar) when you walk out, you would say whoa, that place is creepy/gross.

I was planning to go; unfortunately tending to my sick cat kept me home all weekend. Thanks for going Spang, it's important and I'm glad you made the trip.

I do think that this kind of thing is effective, especially right now. This isn't like the Iraq protests, where people were simply displaying opposition to an already-decided strategy and an uninterested decision-making process. Nobody at an Iraq march was going to vote for, or donate money to, George W. Bush. On the other hand, Obama is supportive of gay rights and received massive support from the gay rights community, and many members of the Democratic Congressional majority are in the same position. They're inclined to take steps on gay rights anyway; this march is a method of putting pressure on them and ensuring that gay rights issues stay on the front burner.

I again have to disagree with Drasta. This isn't a pride march, and I doubt that much of the silliness present at DC pride marches, and the high heels race, and all that other stuff was present here. Also, southeast DC is a perfectly fine portion of the city that I was lucky enough to live in for a year. Amazingly, I was not shot, robbed, threatened or assaulted, despite my penchant for wandering around alone and drunk late at night. It also contains, in Phase 1 and Remingtons, two of the absolute best gay bars in the city.
