I recently started to put together an Eldar army and was wondering if anyone else played and had pictures of their painted armies to show off.
(Also I didn't see another section to post this under so yeah General it is.)

Brittney has 4 armies (Templar being his favorite) and some of the guys at work play too. He's been trying to get me into it, but it's just too damn expensive for me ><.

I'll bug him for pics, or point him to this thread to post them himself.

I own:

-Every White Dwarf from 100-current (I am thinking about getting rid of them though, take up too much space)

-I've had and read every novel the Black Library has put out concerning 40k, until about 2 years ago. I have since sold the majority of the collection on Ebay.

-Every codex from every addition since Rogue Trader

-at least 5,000 point armies for Space Marines and Elder, with about 1000pt in Tyranids

-Necromunda w/ every gang

-Space Hulk (2nd edition with Genestealer and Deathwing) w/30+ metal terminators and over 100 stealers

-Blood Bowl (2nd Edition) w/ every team, as well as Star players and Campanion books

- Easily over 1,000 minis from every generation starting around 1988, with my last boxed set being the new eldar walkers and a squad of striking scorpions

I have played 40k once. To me, Necromunda and Space Hulk were far superior. I am much more interested in the painting and collection of armies. I regret never getting Gorka Morka and also for not getting into Mordenheim for Warhammer.

I don't collect or paint anymore. I have boxes and boxes of minis still on sprues, with some that have only been primed. I have too much stuff that needs to be assembled and painted. It's too fucking expensive. When I see an army now, I cannot help but instantly do a price calculation in my head.

Now, about painting...

I was really good back in the day, easily averaging in the 8/10 category. I would've put my stuff up against anything in White Dwarf, which was the standard at the time. However, nowadays I am waaaaay the fuck out of my league. I stopped painting, and the hobby has advanceed to some pretty incredible levels. Things like non metal metalics (NMM), Light Effects, and insane freehand would take me ages to incorporate into my old paint style. I appreciate the challange, but I have other hobbies that are easier to start and stop than painting right now.

The hobby still facinates me, but I observe from a safe distance now. If I ever wanted to pick up the brush again, I have hundreds and hundreds of minis I can do right here at my house.

For minis, I haven't found a site better than Cool Mini Or Not (CMON). I visit it daily and see what people are doing to 1-up the hobby. If you want to look at entire armies, just type it in the search engine.

I always choose to browse gallery from the right menu and look at the stuff as it is added. I like to do this because I can see how normal people paint. If everything was a masterpiece, it would just be frustrating to browse For anyone interested in what it's all about, click the Top 10 list and you can see some unbelievable skill.

!!! Too bad you don't live in so cal sucka, we would already be busting caps! I have about 8000 points of Black Templar, 3000 points of Necrons and 2500 points of Daemon Hunters. The Black Templar are my favorite, I've assembled and painted about 80% of my army but I bought some professionally painted so I could jump into the game quicker. My Necrons I bought fully assembled and painted because they were a sick paint scheme and they were a crazy deal. The Daemon Hunters are my newest army, I've assembled them all myself and I'm about to start painting them soon. I play with a about 4 homies at the moment, 2 guys play Orks, one guy plays Chaos space marines and another plays Eldar. I'll upload some of the pics of my guys so you can check em out man.

I have never had anyone around me that shared the hobby. If I did, I would likely still be painting just for the social aspect. Good looking Templars! I don't recall seeing too may 8k armies without some dreads and other vehicles!

Due to this thread, I actualy broke out some of my stuff yesterday and am debating painting a figure or 2 for old times sake and to see if this old dog can learn some new tricks.

I'm currently painting my Eldar army and it's not looking so good. I think by my 4th or 5th squad I'll have figured out most of the tricks.
Eldar eyes currently are my bane. I think I've painted over the same faces on my Dire Avengers like five times so far.
I'll post some pics when they are completed. I find it funny that you also have Black Templars since that and Dark Angels were gonna be my next army!

Actually I do have a bit of armor, I just don’t have pics of that part of my army at the moment heh. I have 1 land raider crusader, 4 dreadnaughts, 2 predator tanks, 2 vindicators tanks and 4 rhinos.

For painting, some people like to base in white but i say always base in black, even if your color scheme will be lite in the end, black base coat is always best. Also, always remember to THIN your paints! Paint that is too thick will always make a model look like crap, its better to use 4-5 coats of paint to get the depth and color you want than it is to just use one thicker coat. Thin your paints lots! heh

I got pissed off when Squats were removed from the official rules and stopped playing. I haven't touched the game in probably 15 years. I had put too much time, energy and money into my Squats, and most of the local groups that I played with used only current, official rules. I also had a bunch of Imerial Guard. I liked to play these two armies because everyone and their grandmother had Eldar, Tyranid and Space Marines. I sold off all of my figs and rules years ago.

I agree. I made extra money years ago painting 15mm miniatures for wargamers with more money than time. Starting with a black base and building up from there is kind of standard on that scale, I think. With less detail, the dark base helps give the models more depth. Good thinned paints and copious dry-brushing really make for a good paint job, and I found that that technique translated very nicely to 25mm scale.

I think I've got a box of old fantasy 25mm figs painted somewhere around the house. I'll see if I can find them and post a few pics.

White base with a wash of black to darken the cracks works well but is more time consuming!

I'm using Craftworld Ulthwe for my Eldar.

I'm currently suffering from the bane of using too thick of paint instead of thinning.
Fortunately I did my Dire Avengers first so those are plastic and replaceable easier.
I can't find a good method of removing paint off plastic mini's without melting them (i.e. acetone).

I am currently using the black primer with a black basecoat then following up with detail.
Pain in the ass, my drybrushing is horrid too haha!

Apparently brake fluid works well on plastic mini's for removing paint (and skin if you aren't careful).

Also, a sharpened toothpick is a good eye painter from what I've experimented with so far. Go figure.

Played some back then when it was new!

There's a cleaner called Simple Green I think that's good for plastics.

Ya simple green is great, i have used it myself and it worked like a champ. Though i had to leave the minis in 100% solution for just under 2 days to get em as clean as i wanted.

You have to use a tooth brush to get all the paint off once they have been dipped, after that let them dry and them bush them again while completely dry, that will flake off anything that wouldn't come off before.

You may have to re-glue the minis but the plastic will be completely unharmed.

You guys should be painting Japanese anime figures not warhammer models!

I remember Jice had a huge collection of these as well. I was more into Battletech than Warhammer 40k. I couldn't afford both habits.

My favorite Warhammer game was Bloodbowl. I remember picking my copy of the game when it made its debute at GenCon. Loved the astro granite field.

I like how after our Thursday night game of Dark Heresy and Warhammer 40k army construction that my friends show me how I have been painting things entirely wrong. =)
I overprimered, badly.
I have been using paint that's waaaay too thick not to mention basecoating when it wasn't necessary.
I've also been going about the actual brush-paint-model process all wrong!
I now have 4 liters of Simple Green soaking all 68 miniatures to get the multi-layers of primer off and I shall start a fresh!
btw don't use brake fluid on plastic mini's longer than 4 hours, it softens them up a bit and makes them pitted =(

Next step! Proper painting, pics to come!

Hah! You are going to be busy for a very long time. Though it does sound like fun. I remember painting the figures from Grenadier for the Dungeons & Dragons game back in the late 70's.

Using Simple Green and soaking 67 miniatures overnight and most of the day 16 hours.
Using a toothbrush to clean off the paint to get them to 98% looking like new for 8 miniatures 3.2 hours.
Getting pissed off and grabbing the garden hose and using the jet setting on sprayer to clean off the paint off 59 miniatures to look 95% new: 45 minutes. (not to mention getting completely soaked in process).

Yeh I was battletech geek myself, and D&D figures as well. I got some good figures painted (i liked em, not award winning) but my brother was the man with a brush. He just spent more time doin it. Place called Game Empire here in San Diego has a nice couple glass cabinets full of these, some of them miraculously painted. Glad i never got into this game, id still be painting.

That's a pretty damn good paint job - and wow, that IS a tiny one, even for a miniature.

My only critique is that it looks a little too glossy, but I know for damn sure that I can't do any better. My last few attempts at painting were pretty asstastic.

I decided wherever possible to use the plastic prepainted ones.

I think what looks glossy is the silver I dry-brushed over parts of it It doesn't look quite so shiny off camera - more sparkly! I am a girl after all

no Much to the dismay of Sylvos, I made up my own color scheme. I don't see myself painting entire armies. Seems kind of boring to paint them all the same.

For a first mini, I consider that a completely passable job, or what is referred to as TT (Table Top) ready. It looks like you blocked out all the colors well enough. All you need to do is mix in a couple more techniques on top of that and you'll see marked improvement. Drybrushing, washes, and layering were the first 3 techniques I learned and they made a world of difference compared to simply blocking. Oh yeah, don't forget basing! That is like the cherry on top and really sets the model off.

It's an excellent first paint job Sirensa. Pretty clean, good colours, kept within the lines And most importantly, you saw it through. Most first miniatures don't get fully painted!

Absolutely nothing wrong with just painting them for the sake of painting and not doing up a whole army. I got started in that hobby with just painting cool looking minis. I don't really do it anymore, too many other distractions. If you ever intend to paint anymore then I'll offer some tips, but I won't waste your time if your not

The Eldar Phantom is SUPERB!!!

My last attempt resulted in a crappy paint job that flaked off in two sessions of gaming that led me to give away my paints/brushes etc to my brother; but I'm going to be painting a few myself in the coming week or two. I'm actually kind of geeked about it after several discussions w/ my Warhammer playing carpool buddy, this thread, and several hours on CMON.

I've got a good rhythm going so far. I'll post pics soon when I reach the halfway point, I'm averaging about a squad-ish a day.
I've managed to get 3 army profiles out of the army so far. I found it helpful to have various builds to handle different armies (Chaos Demons being the most annoying).

I just went and dropped $70 on paint and crap - lol, shoot me now.

I had to share this.

I was cleaning out my garage and I found a large glass container, with lid, containing about 40-50 minis soaking on break fluid. They have been soaking for 4-5 years in the garage, through all seasons. Luckily, all the minis are metal. The juice is all black now, so I had to shake it a bit to see what was in there. I see some Necromunda gangs, a metal marine dread. I think there were several first generation Harlequins in there too. Maybe I'll take some pics for giggles.

I'll scrub them up later this week. I'm kind of excited to see what I have! If I want to get back into the swing of things, painting a gang of 8-10 models would be a nice way to start.
