Cross Edge (PS3)

Post by miir »

Picked it up last night and only got to play it for an hour or two...

It's total oldschool JRPG... top-down world map, random encounters, turn based combat.

Great dialogue and excellent english voice acting.
I love having the option to switch English/Japanese voices... All JRPGs should include both!

Combat isn't very exciting at newbie levels but get more interesting as you get bigger, better and more outrageous skills. The animations for high level combo attacks are ridiculously over-the-top.

I'll post more as I play through it.

I am picking up Fuel next week so I think this will have to wait for a week or so til' I get paid again, but it looks pretty cool.

I was gonna wait on it a bit since I know it will take a while to play through and I will probably want to play through it once I start playing it - but the more I have read about it online the more I hear about how it is shipping limited quantities and will likely be hard to find before too long, so I want to grab it soon.

Definitely post more once you get into it a bit.

It's far from perfect but I'm really enjoying it so far...

The combat system is pretty intimidating and the menu system is cumbersome.
The writing/dialogue is top notch. It's loaded with sarcasm and humor. If you're a fan of any NIS games, you'll enjoy it.
The graphics and visuals are very retro... i mean early PS2 retro. Character dialogue is 2d (non animated) artwork with clickthrough dialogue boxes. The battle screens are sprites on a 3d-ish backdrop.

IGN posted a terrible review of the game.. but it was reviewed by the same jackass who panned Disgaea, so take it with a grain of salt.

So basically:

Great writing with a totally ridiculous/hillarious story.
REally good english and japanese voice acting.
A very in-depth combat system.
Side scrolling dungeons!

It's quite challenging... the last JRPG I spent any time with on the PS3 was Enchanted Arms and that game practically played itself. In Cross Edge you actually have to use strategy in battles.
Battles are random encounters but not frequent to the point of making travel frustrating. They give you the ability to manually trigger encounters.

I played through Enchanted Arms on the 360. That one was pretty bad. A thirsty man doesn't refuse water though and since RPG's were few and far between then I got it.

Got the full 1000/1000 nerdscore on it too....

I am liking this game quite a bit so far, although I've only played about 5 hours or so. Everything is relatively complicated, but somehow that isn't stopping me from liking the game quite a bit, and I'm already getting used to things.

I will probably have to break from this a bit to finish other stuff as I imagine this game will take a shit ton of time, but I'm looking forward to finishing it!

This game is hard as a mofo. I kept getting my ass kicked by the stupid Prinny so I just kept leveling until I got to level 10, and was able to beat him relatively easily then. If this much grinding is required throughout the game it's gonna take forever to beat!

Looks like the game is being ported to the 360 in Japan. Not much of a stretch hopefully to see it come to the 360 in NA as well.

That's cool :)

Some advice for anyone playing this (miir), I went through the menu's in the save point's - but not all of them. If you go into the database menu or whatever and look at titles, any of them highlighted in green are titles you can attain. Some of them are based on you having a certain item or a certain amount of money, and if you lose the item/money you lose the title, but most of them I got so far were for surviving so many battles or killing so many enemies, etc.

I was having a really hard time with money, I couldn't even buy some simple fucking healing items... Then I went through and got all the titles I could and that brought me from like 4,000 to 90,000 gold, haha.

Hope that helps.

I think I am going to buy a digital copy of the strategy guide today. It's $9.99 and I hear it's not the best (if you want it printed and mailed to you it's $45), but anything will help.

I use Aurica in my party so I have no need to buy healing items.
I have a good bit of cash saved up, but nothing really to spend it on.

I see, I've been using Ayatane, Morrigan, Lyner and York for the most part.

I haven't had experience with Doublejump before, but everything I've read online says it's very far from a complete guide. I just bought it anyhow, I realized I had got refunded for something on paypal and had a balance there so I bought the E-Guide. I'll let you know how it is once I actually am able to print it out (it's odd I would have to wait for them to process this instead of letting me view/print it right after payment verification.)

Initial impressions:
It's only like 149 pages so I can tell you without even reading the index it's not complete, this guide should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000+ pages long.

Also - just because it's an E-Guide, doesn't mean they should make it a flash page so I can't fucking print it. Charging people $45 so they can have a paper copy of a 1/4 complete guide at best is absurd.

I'd be satisfied if it only has complete item matrices, maps and a basic walkthrough... but $45 does seem a bit steep (eventhough it's 'print on demad').
I have printed guides for Disgaea 3, P4 and Mana Khemia (which are all excellent) and they were only $20 each.

$45 for a guide?

Pretty soon, games will be free but the guides will cost $60.00.

If you haven't already, snag the DLC from the Playstation Store.
Just 3 little packs that make things a bit easier at low levels.

Yeah I grabbed those, they helped a bit for sure, funny cause I was going to tell you the same thing. I just went through the second dungeon into this area with a bunch of big villages on the map, and while the fights weren't killing me it was close so I'm gonna need to spend some time leveling again.

Just for shits and giggles I went to the next event, which is like the 466th encounter with Etna/Prinny.. Definitely not beating that one for a bit. haha.

The weird thing is I was reading online threads about the game, etc. and I read people saying that they did like 450 hit combos worth like 1 million + damage at like level 8... I'm level 12 with my main party and couldn't do more than 10k if I tried.. Am I really missing that much?

I really don't know the combat system well enough to know if that's actually possible at that level.
I'm actually having a difficult time getting my head wrapped around the combat system...

I was at first too, but I think I have it down pretty well. If you have any specific questions or want me to just kinda say what I know I could do that.

Really? I expected more along the lines of a Prima guide. A detailed walkthrough of every single piece of the game along with detailed lists of skills, weapons, spells, etc - not only a list of them but how/where you get them, who can use them, how much they cost (if applicable), etc. I mean, the weapons and skill lists and all that are nice and everything, but if I'm stuck on a part, I don't want to look at the guide for a hint and just see "level up a little bit and try again" as the suggested strategy :(

Would be nice if there was a demo for this. It rec'v a 47 on metacritic so its the type of game that would benefit from a demo.

I disagree. You have to play this game for at least 10-15 hours before you have any idea of what's going on and can make a fair judgement of it. That's why it got reviewed so poorly.

Basically, if you are a hardcore fan of traditional JRPGS, you will most likely enjoy this game, but if not I wouldn't bother.

Haha, I don't care for the PS3 controller too much either, but it's more bothersome for FPS type games, for this game I don't notice it when I'm playing.

Just a FYI, the costume packs DLC are worth every penny... makes grinding levels in the teens (and into the 20s) much easier.

Yeah because reviewers never spend more than 10 hours on any game. 1 hour.. tops!

Maybe it got a low score because the person thought it deserved one. omg there's a novel idea.

It's a niche game that takes a long time to get into.
I'm 25+ hours into it and I still feel like a complete noob.

I totally understand why many reviewers are giving it a poor review.
The graphics are last gen, it's got a steep learning curve and it's a JRPG.

I don't know what kind of a response you expected from that? Reviewers speed through games as fast as possible, which can sometimes lead to an unfair review. However in this case, while I don't know for sure, I'd guess they didn't even finish the game, which considering what miir and I have said about the amount of time the game takes to get into - don't you think that might make the review nearly worthless?

Sorry, I'm a tad touchy right now.
