Vatican Gives Two Thumbs Up to 'Potter'
Mon Feb 3, 4:03 PM ET

By NICOLE WINFIELD, Associated Press Writer

VATICAN CITY - The Vatican is giving two thumbs up to the Harry Potter series.

The good vs. evil plot lines of the best-selling books are imbued with Christian morals, the Rev. Don Peter Fleetwood told a Vatican news conference Monday.

"I don't see any, any problems in the Harry Potter series," Fleetwood said.

He was responding to questions following the release of a new Vatican document on the New Age phenomenon, which he helped draft as a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture.

Fleetwood was asked whether the magic embraced by Harry Potter and his pals at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was problematic for the Roman Catholic Church. Some evangelical groups have condemned the series for glamorizing magic and the occult.

"I don't think there's anyone in this room who grew up without fairies, magic and angels in their imaginary world," said Fleetwood, who is British. "They aren't bad. They aren't serving as a banner for an anti-Christian ideology.

"If I have understood well the intentions of Harry Potter's author, they help children to see the difference between good and evil," said Fleetwood. "And she is very clear on this."

He said British author J.K. Rowling was "Christian by conviction, is Christian in her mode of living, even in her way of writing."

Rowling's four Harry Potter titles have sold an estimated 192 million copies worldwide, and the books have been published in at least 55 languages. The first two books have been adapted into hit movies and a fifth book in the series is due in bookstores June 21.

The books chronicle the fictional adventures of young Harry and his wizard pals at Hogwarts as they battle Harry's nemesis, the evil sorcerer Voldemort.

They must not have gotten to the part where Harry and his pals get whacked out on PCP, then go down to TJ to catch a donkey show.

It's kind of depressing watching Catholocism try and stay relevent with non-catholics these days. Like anyone gives a shit what some doddering old gibberspeaking cunt says about Harry Potter, who is probably more popular and influential than he will ever be.

Yeah I really look to the catholic church to tell me what's proper in the world. There's more fucking sexual deviants at sunday mass in st. andrew's catheadrel than there is at an S&M party in Los Angeles, and I am supposed to look at them for approval on what I can read. Gee thanks you stupid fucking hypocrites! Now to get some morbidly obese people to tell me what I should be eating!

The entire basis of my faith revolves around the hope that there really is a God for the sole reason that I would like nothing more than to see the pope roasting in hell for eternity for casually looking the other way while his priests rape innocent children on practically a daily basis. HATE HATE HATE HATE

They cling so fiercely to literal interpretations of a book written from collected fables (Old Testament) and various accounts of one dude's life (New Test.) 2000 years ago. It's been translated more times than the phrase "Your place or mine?"

I'd have to agree. Except for the fact she believes there is a God at all.

If you're going to reset Rome, at least give credit.

the catholic church does not view the Old Testament as something that should be translated literally. That does differentiate them from a lot of (American) protestant denominations who are fundamentalist/creationist etc.

despite the many faults of the vatican, they actually do recognize scientific (though not always rapidly - thx Galileo) knowledge often in the light that it should be viewed. for instance the vatican acknowledges that the universe is billions of years old, not thousands (literal interpretation of bible puts it around 5800 or so.)

again, they have lots of faults, and they dont get a dime of my money, but of all the versions of Christianity out there, Catholicism does more to fostor true scholorship about the religion.

you won't see your local white suburban hard core fundamentalist church doing anything of the kind.

I dont support nor deny the existance of a god (though I've deemed it doubtfull) however if there is a god I doubt an all powerful being would be so arrogant as to damn anyone to hell for not following such archaic rules...I would assume passage to "heaven" would be based upon how we lived our lives and treated other people....basic morals people should follow reguardless of the existance of a higher being or an afterlife....any god arrogant enough to damn people to hell for not eating crackers on sundays or getting dunked in water to forgive them for a sin they didnt commit doesnt deserve my or anyone elses soul in his farce for a perfect existance...

(Yep I went to a catholic school up till high school BLARG)
