My old computer, which had my all of my music on it completely died. Now I can only access the songs from that library through my iPod. Is there any way to transfer that iPod library to my new computer? Or do I need to reformat my iPod and start fresh in trying to recreate that old, long-gone library??

I would consider putting the hard drive with all the music, into a computer that works. Other than that, I got nothin'.

Yeah that's what I'm considering. Was hoping someone knew a way to transfer all those music files directly from my iPod to my drive, using some third-party app. Either way, I can probably find my whole library of music on old CDs and from Soulseek, etc... Appreciate your quick response.

I don't think you need a 3rd party app. If it is like the players that I have, they are basically recognized as a storage device. I know with mine I can just plug it into a PC and open the player like a hard drive and copy it over.

You can just copy over the files from your ipod to your hard drive using anything BUT itunes.
Although the filenames will all be random 4 letter names, they still have the proper tag info.
When you add them to your itunes library, they will show the proper titles and artists within the application.

If it's a dead HDD issue, try to get a copy of Spinrite and run that on the machine. I've heard it does some pretty amazing things with HDD's that seem dead.

Er, ignore my previous comment, as I apparently didn't fully read your original message.

If the PC "died", the HDD may be fine. This happened with my both wife's old PC and her last laptop. In BOTH cases I was able to remove the HDD and mount it on the new PC using an external adapter kit. The desktop kit was cheap (but I was able to borrow one from a friend) and had a case to mount the drive in and a USB adapter. The laptop one was more of an engineering monstrosity with little things to plug in for power on one side and a thing to attach on the other side that had a USB cable, but the end result was the same on both. I was able to mount the drives and pull off of them all documents/music etc onto the new system.

Also concur with previous posters, the iPod is probably recognized as a generic storage device as well. if not, fuck Apple.
