This is completely different for each individual, it depends on what's important to you and how your life is structured. At this point in my life, all I need is lots of money, I already am happy.

of course it can.
indirectly of course.

I say it cant. I have fuck all money and a wonderful girlfriend, and I'm happy.
It can ease your worries though, and for many people that can lead to happiness.

The question is not is money the only source of happiness in the universe.

I'll agree with that. But my opinion still stands, for me, money cant buy happiness.

Money can buy happiness. There is no arguement here. Once you remove the 'requirement' to go out and 'earn' money to 'eat and pay bills' you can concentrate on lifes PLEASURES.
If you were rich you could...
-find out how long you can sleep for.
-see how long you can stay awake for.
-find out how long it takes to eat a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich in Paris and then fly home.
-sit on your ass, yell at the cook to make you some Burritos and tell that other fucker to wash the ass stains outta yer skivvies... and do it PRONTO.
-walk in to any store, buy anything you want and never worry about 'how much it is'...
-own 7 cars... 1 for each day of the week.
There are WAY too many things one could do to be HAPPY and RICH... so get down out of them fucked up clouds you're in and realize money is happiness... course you will burn in hell according to the Bible (if you believe in that sort of shit you have been brainwashed)

I never understood why people think this particular question is so deep.
Money obviously can't buy happiness, as happiness is not so much a tangible thing as it is a state of mind. However, money can be used to buy things which make us happy.
So the answer to your question is no. Money cannot "buy" happiness in the literal sense of the word, but the absence of it will almost guarantee unhappiness. One thing I wish it could buy would be the person who originated this question a half ounce of common sense.

It really depends on one's definition of happiness. I believe money is an anesthetic. It may make you a little happier, but theres always something to worry about, something to cry about, or something to shout about. Sorta numbs your psychological pains...
yes it can make you happier, but no if you're looking at the big picture.

Money can most certainly buy happiness. The more money you have, the better your shot at 'buying' happiness will be. In fact, there are three things in life that will make being happy a hell of a lot easier:
1) Money
2) Being Good Looking
3) Fulfillment
Of those three, the first two are much easier options. And since not everyone is born with looks, money is the only shot most people have.
Does this whole argument seem shallow? Sure. But most people are shallow. If you're honest about it, and you can accept it, you'll realize that it's true.

Hmmm
This thread had me shaking my head. It made me think of what money meant to me and how I saw it affecting people and their...happiness.
My thoughts on...Money
To me it brings sorrow and pain....
People have robbed others for money.
- Imagine you coming home to find out your house was broken into and many of your valuables taken to be sold for...money.
- Imagine you going to the parking lot to find your car was broken into and your radio ripped out to be sold for...money.
- Imagine you going to the ATM then having a gun pointed to your head becuse of your...money.
People even kill for money.
- Imagine someone plotting to murder you and collecting the life insurance because of...money.
- Imagine you're at work and a former employee comes in and kills you and the other co-workers because he was fired and no longer has...money.
Imagine how much happiness is REALLY made by...money.

If you say money cannot buy happiness, then you live out in the woods in a log cabin and live off the land, right? Because anything other than that basic lifestyle is a luxury, bought with cash.

ok I am going to have to say NO...
Now are we talking about the materialistic happiness or are we talking about the true emotion happiness which eventually leads to love?
Because money can only buy the materialistic happiness not the true happiness.

Money can buy happiness and the lack of it can bring unhappiness.
Money is just one thing on a list of things that bring happiness. If I had all the money I would ever want, I wouldn't be stuck here 50-60 hours a week. I wouldn't be spending 1/10 of my weekday life in transit to get here either. I woudn't have to spend my entire weekends trying to catch up on errands.
It does make me appreciate my four weeks of vacation more, but I'd rather be travelling all of the time instead of just 2 or 3 weeks a year. I wouldn't have to shop in Home Depot anymore unless I just wanted lightblubs or something. I wouldn't get into arguements with my wife over what she spends. I wouldn't have to settle on a house.
Besides, lapdances cost $20 a pop in the city, need money to that little piece of happiness.
:D

No doubt it can.
Just reading the word 'money' made me smile.
If Im pissed, I shop. If Im sad, I shop..etc.
If I win the lotto, you can bet your ass on it I will purchase my happy home, my happy car, my happy butler ,my happy nanny and a Yorkie and then I will take my happy self to my happy pool and Im sure I will stay happy until I realize the IRS got more cash than I did. : )
Financial stability keeps one at ease. A chunk of marriages break up over money and lack of. Not that money can keep a bad marriage together, but it can hurt a good one pretty fast.
I doubt it would make me 100% happy unless I had an endless supply of money. I do know, when I do have extra cash to blow - I am happy.
It depends on what kind of person you are I suppose. You could have money and suddenly get that feeling that you are 'god', you get greedy and belittle other people. That is an unhappy rich person. You could have money and be one of those people who enjoy sharing (not to the point you are used).
Fuck, I have no clue. I know it makes me happy, I like to be able to get other people shit for no reason but to make them smile, and I like to go on shopping spree's at the Yankee candle store and stock up on fleece jammies with tacky matching fuzzy socks.

Nope.
A severe enough lack of money can cause UNhappiness.
But beyond basic needs money has nothing to do with happiness. How much does it cost to shoot baskets with your kid?

I'd say $10-15 thouasand chidoro (per person).

Should be an option for depends.
Whether money can or can't buy happiness all comes down to what makes each person happy.
If shooting basketball with your kids makes you happy then stacks of cash aren't needed.
However, if trips around the world are your deal, then money can make you happy.

Heh, I know, my wife and I have done it twice, once on our honeymoon.
http://www.konavillage.com/ is our place of choice, hale LS-8. They also have an extensive kids program (except in September which is couple only) if your kid happens to suck at b-ball.
Sabek got the point I was trying to make: to each their own.

Or you could mooch off people, and use their basketball, and since money does not buy happiness, you do not have a car...so you and your son walk miles away to the park....in mocassins, because money buys shoes too...unless you got them from the local mission (which you walked to)
I would like to see the look on your sons face on Christmas morning when you tell him money does not buy happiness, and he gets no gifts...other than the ones you hand carved of course, with the cutting tool you made from a sharp rock.

Amen and well said.
Money may temporarily satisfy your need for instant gratification, but it wont make you happy with yourself and your life if you are unsatisfied with yourself.
"If you do not get it from yourself, where will you go for it?"
Nowhere.

Money would sure as hell buy ME happiness (Or just get rid of stress). However, this might be TMI but my brother makes $120G's a year and he is a miserable, lonely alcoholic fuck. I would rather be poor(30g's a year) and have a smile on my face, than rich and miserable.

Money does buy happiness. Never heard anyone say they were glad they were broke. I am not saying you cannot be broke and happy, lord knows I have been there. I am just giving the bird to people that say money does not bring happiness, cause it does for most. Your brother sounds like money is not his problem, but alcohol. Bet if he sobered up and got someone to enjoy that 120G's with he'd be one happy mofo.
Not too many chicks these days digging homeless dudes, but oh, preach to me about how they chose a homeless dude to marry because money does not bring happiness.

And if you have no money to buy a nice hoop and ball, clear a small patch of ground outside your hut, make a small circle with stones then throw other stones into the circle from a predetermined distance! It's still a game of skill you can enjoy with your kid and that's the point. If you live in a hut in the wilderness the kid won't know about nikes and shiny metal hoops and orange bouncy balls and you'll both be 'happy'.
Gimme the bare minimum warmth, comfort and the company of good friends and family and I'm happy and not much is better than that. The few things that are are instrinsically transitory

teh cash tho. I love to fritter. It won't make me happy but it's damn good at reducing UNhappiness and buying cool shit to provide entertaining distractions.

This is a very silly question and incredibly over-simplified. Happiness is subjective to begin with. Some people find momentary thrills "happiness" without even having a true acceptance of themselves. Money has no effect on what you think of yourself. The media is filled with rich unhappy people, people who turn to eating disorders, drugs, and other vices that allow one to avoid dealing with their problems.
