THOR

Post by Keverian FireCry »

Kenneth Branagh to Direct it...

It's a pretty good choice(based on IMDB, so it's subject to change of course). He's an Emmy award-winning and Academy award-nominated actor with roots in Shakespearean British theater. He's directed plenty of movies- his best being Shakespeare adaptations of course.

With Branagh at the reins it would point to this being a medieval fantasy more than a traditional comic book. Thor will likely be talking as if he jumped out out of a Shakespearean novel(which is exactly how he is in the comics btw), but with the Avengers movie coming it's likely it will crossover into the modern, mortal realm.

Who should play Thor/Loki? Joaquin Phoenix could virtually reprise his Gladiator role and play a pretty good Loki, but I have trouble finding a possible Thor candidate. Apparently Daniel Craig turned down the role. He's ripped and with camera work could be tall enough, but he ain't in the race anymore.

Yeah Yeah, but WHO's gonna play Thor?

Joaquin Phoenix? Never! Dude is weaker than Gibs Melson fer crissakes!

Who can do Thor justice?

A blonde Triple H with voice-over? (The Wrestler)

Karl Urban? Troja-style Pitt?

Danny DeVito? Nicholas Cage?? Johnny Depp? Orlando Weak? Leonardo DiWeaksaucio? Toby McWeako?

Will Thor be CGI in a Beowulfian-way?

Thor is Power Incarnate in a Heroic and Chivalrous Way (Not the savage way of Hulk)

I was totally thinking he could work as Thor after seeing him on Generation Kill and then on True Blood. He may need a bit more mass to fill the role though.

Thor has been cast. It's Captain Kirks' dad from the new Star Trek movie.

Chris Hemsworth

Haven't seen him in anything other than those first minutes of Star Trek, but if he bulks up I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Tom Hiddleston has been cast as Loki. I've never seen him in anything, but he has the right look for the role. He's in Wallander, a recent mystery series from BBC that also stars Kenneth Branagh. Gonna have to check it out.

As long as Fin Fang Foom and THE DESTROYER is in this movie, its all good. (Loki MUST use Destroyer in his plans)

We'll prolly see Tony Stark approaching Thor after the end-credits.

More casting has been done for this, including Odin and The Warriors Three.

Asgardians:
Odin - Anthony Hopkins
Volstagg the Valiant - Ray Stevenson (Titus Pullo from 'Rome')
Fandral the Dashing - Stuart Townsend (Lestat from 'Queen of The Damned')
Hogun the Grim - Tadanobu Asano (Genghis Khan from 'Mongol')
Sif - Jaimie Alexander (TV shows I've never watched)

Puny Mortals:
Jane Foster - Natalie Portman

Stellan Skarsgard is in the cast, but his role isn't known yet. He's the father of Alexander Skarsgard, who we hoped would play Thor. So, the casting director was only off by one generation of Skarsgards! :P

It's still early in production, but here's the first photo of Thor. The costume is exactly what he's pictured wearing in the comics these days, minus the helm. I like that they went with the beard for the film though. I can't wait to see him in action in a fully edited shot.

Dude got big. Thor is looking great. The fan reactions from the trailer shown at comicon have been overwhelmingly positive. At first I was kinda "meh" but the production shots and feedback have been so far beyond what I was expecting that I'm actually giving over to the "hyped" side of things.

Re: THOR

Post by Winnow »

This is what Thor should look like:

Image

Thor is a bad-ass. He's pretty much unstoppable. Only the Hulk even has the strength to live the Mighty Mjollnir!

Thor = Strong, plus lighting powers, flight, etc.
Thor is easily in the elite class of superheroes in any comic universe when it comes to superhuman strength.

I think Marvel should revise their strength scale. They usually classify in increments of 10 tons with "class 100" meaning 100 tons or more. It's like after 100, they forget how to count. Nevertheless, it's very misleading. For instance, Colossus of the X-men can lift just over 100 tons. But in no way does he come close to equaling the strength of a Thor, Hulk or Silver Surfer, three beings also placed in the 100 ton category. For visual reference, 100 tons is almost exactly the same as four fully loaded 45 foot trailers that are attached to a tractor trailer truck (the tractor, the trucks pulling the the trailers, weigh up to 10 tons...). Anyone that has kept up with Thor over the years knows Thor has many feats of strength well beyond 100 tons.

And that's without knowledge of the Runes or the power of the Odin force.

And keep in mind, that with the lifting of the Midgard Serpent, a creature said to have one-third the mass of earth (earth's mass being 13.2 billion trillion ton) Thor has also demonstrated incalculable strength. One-third of that number is 4.4 billion trillion tons.
So for all those guys out there that say Thor does not have strength on par with Superman...

They are simply wrong. And all these feats are without the advantage of the so-called "Warrior's Madness" (which increases his strength ten-fold). How one even quantifies that kind of strength...I don't even know.

Thor is one strong dude.

Not so sure about this one. It's definitely a re-imagining of Thor. I guess they wanted more beefcake time instead of a gimpy doctor on the screen for most of the movie.

So far it just looks like Natalie Portman wanted to get laid by Chris Hemsworth so they decided to make a Thor movie to hook the two up.

It's been almost 20 years since I seriously read comics, but I do still own the first 300ish issues of Thor (I only have a handful of Journey Into Mystery from the 80s to the 120s, and then every Thor from when it changed names at like #126 up until the mid 400s) and he was always my favorite character. That said, the trailer doesn't look too far off of the comics. Odin was pissed at Thor and cast him down to Earth, sans-powers, to live as Dr. Donald(?) Blake in order to learn humility and such. The big metal suit of armor/robot-looking thing in the trailer was the Destroyer. It looks like it represented Asgard decently (I wonder if they'll have the Rainbow Bridge?). Obviously they need to update his origin story to be more modern, unless they want it to be like Mad Men + Norse Gods (which wouldn't be all bad).

I'm excited for this to come out. (And I'm excited to stop using parentheses)

I suppose, but I recall Dr Blake as being a frail man that banged his walking stick on the ground to become Thor.

In this movie, Thor walks around as Thor all the time with the same size and strength.

My experience with Thor comes from Owning the original Avengers #1 and reading his early history while mostly with the team.
