How do you like your hot dogs?

On Tuesdays, this guy brings the most awesome hot dog cart to work. It's called Naughty Dawg, and he makes the best hot dogs ever. He has normal dogs, jumbo dogs, "naughty dogs" (which are jumbo and spicy, SO good!), polish sausage... and he'll prepare them in any of a bunch of different ways. Kraut, chili/cheese/onions, chicago-style, cujo (which is with sport peppers/jalepenos/hot sauce/etc).

To that end, what is the best way to eat a hot dog? Let's assume that you're allowed to put ketchup/mustard/relish on any of the listed styles. Please let me know if there's a version I'm not familiar with.

I suppose this could have gone in the culinary forum but whatevah, I do what I want.

Chili, mustard, and onions. Yum. I think you've convinced me to take a walk to Coney Island Lunch

I voted Chili/cheese - nothing else. I haven't had one in forever now, I'm gonna have to remedy that today thanks to you sir!

Edit:

If I don't get chili/cheese, I eat them plain. I will however, use ketchup/mustard for brats. Italian sausage (which is my personal favorite) I also eat plain.

Coney Island Restaurants (see: "Coney Island" as type of food outlet) are quite popular in Southeastern Michigan. There are at least 15 different places in Ann Arbor alone. Coney dogs (chili/onions - sometimes cheese) are one of my favorite foods.

Plus I'm pretty sure they're good for you.

Ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, onions, cole slaw and a pickle spear.

Most of the hotdog places around here have their own version of a "Hot Dog Sauce" that's basically mustard and ketchup with hot sauce and a few other spices. There's a little hole in the wall hot dog place near our house that has become my favorite place for dogs. It sits on a bluff overlooking several golf courses in the valley and is located in an old gas station. It unseated the local chain "Sneaky Pete's" as my favorite place to go for a dog. Now I think I'll have to go there for lunch today. Thanks, Sylvus.

This is a tough one...I prefer brats with sauerkraut and brown mustard on Brötchen (a hard roll). I started grabbing them for breakfast from the carts on the way to school in Germany, and I still love them!

I also had chili-cheese dogs with lots of onions growing up. I remember my grandfather rolling up his sleeves every time we had them, since he refused to use utensils to eat them. He always had the chili running down to his elbows.

I miss easy access to this also. I can make something that approximates this from items at my market, but it's still not close to the real deal. When I lived off post, there was a little shop on my way to the bus stop that I stopped at just about every day for this. I also miss squeezing good mustard out of a tube like toothpaste.

Dregor Thule wrote:What is Chicago style?
A Chicago-style hot dog is a steamed Red Hot Chicago, Vienna Beef or Dave Berg hot dog topped with sliced/diced/wedged tomatoes, cucumbers, both a dill pickle spear and sweet pickle relish (a particularly bright green style of relish, referred to as "nuclear green" relish), yellow mustard directly on the sausage, finished with celery salt, and served on a steamed poppy seed bun. Pickled hot peppers ("sport peppers") and chopped or grilled onions are sometimes optional, but usually included by default. Chicago-style never includes ketchup, though some vendors offer small packets of the condiment for those wanting to add it (many proud vendors refuse to "desecrate" their hotdogs, leaving that task to the "offending" customer). Although outside Chicago this style of hot dog is universally associated with the city, equally popular within Chicago is a "Maxwell Street Polish" sausage, usually served on a plain bun with fried or grilled onions and mustard. Both variations are becoming readily available through the nationwide expansions of such Chicago area fast food eateries as Portillo's.[7]

I have never been a big fan of mustard, and I didn't think I'd like a Chicago dog, but I love them now. Today I grabbed a naughty dog with chili and cheese (he forgot the onions :( ) and a Chicago dog. I'm stuffed now!

So I'm a chilli-dog fan. I'm otherwise not a huge hot dog fan. BUT, the other day I went to this Columbian hot dog place (I swear it felt like I was at a club on South Beach) and had a Columbian hot dog. That shit was de-fucking-lish. A Columbian hot dog has grilled onions, pineapple sauce, ketchup/mustard/mayo, crumbled potato chips and bacon. I'm also fairly certain they throw in some magic columbian-style powder to keep people coming because I haven't stopped thinking about those hot dogs since I had them a week ago.

Kraut, mustard and onions.
But I miss the wurst, brown mustard and brotchen too.

I eat at Weinersnitchel entirely too often... For the 'fastfood' dog, chili and cheese is good. They even sell chicago style, I tried em, but that dayglo green relish frightened me.

But when it comes to real sausage dogs (a good bratwurst!) Then nothing beats kraut and grilled onions. I goto the Delmar fair on occasion, just for the brats.

Kraut is evil and has no place on anything :(

Grill a bun length hot dog and place it on a warmed up, fluffy white-bread bun.

Add a thin strip of sharp colby block cheese down one side, tucked between the bun and the dog.

Quarter a Claussen's Kosher dill pickle and tuck it on the other side. Must be chilled and fresh.

Add a single strip of French's mustard down the center.

Add a medium amount of chopped onions down the center. Must be chilled and fresh.

Finally, sweep the dog in a "side to side" motion from end to end with Heinz Ketchup. If done correctly, you can still see the other ingredients between the ketchup coils.

Ingrediants, assembly, and attention to detail are key. I build dogs in such a way that every bite will get the perfect mix of flavors.

Bam. The perfect hot dog.

I'm weird. I like my hot dogs plain. Sometimes I'll put a little relish on it.

Sadly, you are not supposed to eat hot dogs while pregnant. This thread is not helping my cravings. :(

Really, why's that? The nitrates or something?

Can you eat like all-beef or kosher (Hebrew Nationals are pretty good) hot dogs? Turkey dogs? I find it practically criminal to deprive someone of hot dogs for 9 months! :p

Hay that sounds pretty tasty!

I usually do ketchup, mustard, relish
But I also do chili and cheese.
Never onions! (cept fried crispies might be ok) :D
Never kraut!

a line of ketchup, a line of mustard (on opposite side of dog, not touching the ketchup! It all mixes together but looks better before consumption), and chili.

Danish style sounds pretty fantastic.

I eat them plain, or with ketchup.
I can't stand yellow mustard (French's, etc.). I dig every other kind of mustard I've ever tasted (brown, dijon, whole grain, etc.) though.

I'll eat them with chili/cheese, but it's not my preferred method. I also enjoy sautee'd onions, but do not like raw onions in anything.

With brauts i'll do whatever spicy mustard I can find and love some onions (not raw). I've been known to eat kraut on them as well.

Chilli is often best. Yellow mustard only during camping, etc.

There is a great hotdog place in Encino, CA called The Wienery. It kicks ass!!

Also, chillidogs from a cart in NYC is good stuffs too. :) It is more of a chilli "sauce" but it works. ;)

I selected chili/cheese.

The local pizza place (well italian place) gets the same rolls they use for philly cheese steaks, cuts them in half, and uses them for the hotdog bun. I can't really explain why this makes the hot dog experience so much better, but it really is excellent. Also, they cost $1.50.

Some info on Listeria (which can be caused by hot dogs and other lunch meats). http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregna ... teria.html

It does say that all beef hot dogs can be safe if cooked to 160 deg F, but I've been avoiding them altogether. Don't really want to chance it. My husband says that after the baby is born (Dec. 22nd due date) he'll buy me all the hot dogs I want. LOL

Danish hot dogs are fantastic. The only thing that would make them better imo would be to use real hot dogs as opposed to those red long things. The crispy fried onion things are akin to French's French Fried Onions if any of you wanted to try it on your hot dog next time.

PS
I'm so making hot dogs on the grill tonight.

edit: I said "think" instead of "thing"

So how many of you have had a hot dog thanks to Sylvus in the last 2 days?

I grilled up some Nathans last night and they were the most delicious bastards I've ever had. I tried a couple of things after reading the thread and came up with the most superb shit EVER. Grilled Nathans, topped with bacon, pineapple puree, a home-made thousand island thing with ketchup, mayo, mustard and relish and French's French Fried Onions. I'm making more tonight.
