Local AM radio just picked this up a few weeks ago. It pretty much is like the old DP show, but he tends to relish his freedom from ESPN a bit more. I like it! I always enjoyed Dan's take on things and think he is the best out there.

Unfortunately, the same radio station dropped the Jim rome show, which was finally starting to grow on me... pretty much don't listen to Colin Cowherd too much, since he is a yankee fanboi and drones on and on and on and on...

Mike Tirico show bores the crap out of me--maybe it is just due to college basketball, which I am not a fan of.

However, despite missing the Rome show, Dan Patrick is great and I am glad that he is back on the air.

Colin Cowherd is pure awful.

I don't really like Dan Patrick either. He seemed disinterested most of the time he was on. I'd switch to him occasionally when Rome had a bad guest or had a smack off or something else stupid. Dan Patrick gives off a "smug" vibe to me when he's interviewing people. Before he was fired or "left" ESPN, I thought he was getting killed by Rome.

If you can't listen to Rome, I suppose he's the next best option though! Cowherd sucks with his stupid stories and cuts off anyone on the radio that disagrees with him with some stupid rebuttal that really doesn't counter the guest/caller's point. The other day, he went on and on about how great Eminem is. Christ.

Yup. that's Cowherd...he can't let anything go! Blah blah Mike Vick, blah Favre, blah Yankees, yankees, yankees....

I can see how you get the 'smug' bit from DP. He can come across that way if you are not familiar with his personality (radio-wise at least). I find him to be extremely insightful and straight-up funny. Of course, opinions vary.

Yeah, it sucked losing Rome. I suppose if I really want I can listen from his website though. It used to be great with DP following Rome. Then it was boring Tirico and pointless Steven A Smith. I suppose I will enjoy tirico show more when college BB is done. I just can't get into it, but I know it is super-popular right now, of course.

Another thing about Dan is that he has a ton of athlete friends who pop by...he seems to be able to get a few good comments out of folks like John Smoltz, who always gives a good interview.....

Earlier this year, Sueven and I were watching an NBA game on ESPN, and the halftime show had just started. There was some debate about a player (lebron, or shaq, neither of us can remember)mailing in a game, and Bill Walton was going off on one of his long and loud speeches. At the end, Stephen (Steven?) A. Smith whispered "It's just one game, Bill," which followed by Sueven saying "I think that's the first time I have ever heard Stephen A. I kind of like Stephen A. Smith because he pisses people off, has a hardon for anything related to Philadelphia, and always has a strong opinion. However he pretty much sucks at everything, I would probably hate him if I wasn't a Philly team fan.

If you piss people off because you are knowledgeable on the subject, that's one thing. Stephen A. Smith pisses people off because he's annoying as hell. I suppose East coast people can put up with that annoying, loud, talk over everyone, voice more than the more laid back west coast crowd.

The DP show airs here 12-3 on delay....it misses the 'live' aspect with callers and shit, but most callers are stupid anyway.

I know I've bashed Rome here in the past, but like I said, the show kinda grew on me.....not really fond of most of the callers, but I like Jim's takes on many things, so there ya go.

Tony Bruno is better than anyone mentioned in this thread so far.

I don't hear anyone talking about Spielman and Kirk Herbstreits shows. This thread lacks merit.

I am more referring to the best 30 minutes on radio at 10am pst Tony and Gary on KNBR 680, there is nothing more entertaining than that segment anywhere on sportstalk.

That being said listening to Rome is like listening to nails on a chalkboard, he knowledge on sports is incredibly narrow. He is, has always been and will always be a blowhard who thrives off the same mentality that Rush does. The callers are half the show and they are quite possibly the only thing more annoying than him.

I'll take Rome bashing someone than that those other fops gushing about college BB!

I'd agree that he used to be more of a shock-jock/blowhard, but as he's matured (I've been listening to him since '92), he's toned down quite a bit.

Also, for the record, the callers are few and far between of late. It's almost all him talking, or reading email commentary except for a handful or 'regular' callers. There's probably an average of 5-6 calls on any given day except for the 'smack off'.

Also worth noting that he's the most successful individual in the sports talk genre, so while you might not like him your opinion isn't shared.

His tone and "pacing" drive me away. So, his opinion is shared...just not with everyone

I worded that wrong. It's definitely a shared opinion, just not by the majority of sports talk listeners. Easily proven due to his success, ratings, proliferation, and widespread syndication.

Rome show certianly takes a bit of getting used to! I do not like his callers for the most part--they generally are uneducated raiders fans, it seems...

I also get rather bored with any talk of boxing or horse racing, which Jim seems to have taken a liking to.

That said, his show works for some reason. It sucks not having it on locally anymore.

Horse racing and boxing... 2 dead sports... laughable the amount of time they get really, not just on Rome (he is on here so I do hear him from time to time on commercial breaks) but on sports talk in general. I did hear Rome wax poetic for about 45 seconds on his horse a few weeks back and all I could think is... no one fucking cares.

That being said he is a lot like Rush and his positioning in the rankings reflects that (Rush was on top for decades). His sports knowledge lacks a lot off the cuff, anyone can read what is scripted. That said he may have learned more in the past few years, I don't know, but before that I used to hear him stumped all the time by anything that wasn't part of an agreed on conversation. His show has about as much spontaneity as a Mormon dance. When a knowledgeable caller or guest was on Rome would just agree because he was completely out of his element.

Actually I find dan patrick pretty boring cause he just repeats himself over and over. He was much better when he had rob dibble on the show. Cowherd is easily the best show on radio because he is the most sensible and entertaining.

Cowherd is a fucking jerkoff. He was on OSU's campus (at Eddie George's Grill) a few months ago to tape a live show. I walked by during his 'prime time' show, to see maybe 4 people there to see him. I believe Sylvus already exposed that douchebag for the cocksucker he really is, though.

Cowherd is the best show on Espnradio. Doesn't surprise me that many on this board don't like him. He's a very honest host and many people can't handle honesty.

I don't like him because he is overly repetitive and, imo, boring.
