Spring Training Poll - NL West

Post by Canelek »

Overall last year, the NL West was pretty weaksauce at the plate--namely the D-Backs and Padres. However, both teams have great pitching and AZ just got a ton better in that category with the signing of Harren.

CO has a good team, but it seems unlikely that they make the postseason this year, at least IMO. I'm not going to acknowledge SF aside from this sentence and the poll option.

I'll take LA based upon potential offense....pitching wins championships, but you need to hit to get there! :D

I voted for Arizona!

Another year or maturity for the young hitters and improved their pitching which was already a strong point.

I have not looked at their lineup yet, but last I remember, Tony Clark was their best hitter last year. If that is the best they can do on offense, then I just can't see them finishing better than 2nd in the West.

Webb/Harren makes for a great 1-2 though!

Hoping the Rockies can prove that last year wasn't a fluke. We have good/young pitching and with the humidifier, it's starting to bring the obnoxious hitting numbers down. No more launching pad, for better or worse. Troy Tulowitzki has amazing range, and will get better this year. He should have won the Gold Glove and Rookie of the Year. Matt Holiday is coming off an MVP caliber season. Todd Helton didn't have a strong season at the plate, but his presence in the clubhouse is certainly felt in a room full of whipper snappers. Helton should have won the Gold Glove. Brad Hawpe quietly had a 116 RBI season, and is one of the best players no one ever heard of. The only question is who is going to be starting at 2B since Matsui left to be overpaid by yet another team.

The Diamondbacks are the perfect example of a fluke. I seem to recall that they were the only team in the history of the game that made the playoffs having given up more runs than they scored. If not the only team, one of a very select few. It will come down to LA and SD, I think.

hay! It's early but look who's on top in the NL West

Need I remind peeps that the D-Backs were NL champs in 99, 01, 02, 07 (and World Champions in 2001) more Flukes!

The D-Backs lead the bigs with 16 HRs

So far they've swept Colorado in Denver and beat LA tonight in their home opener.

(waiting to see if the fluke team, probably #1 offense or near the top, first place D-Backs complete the sweep of the Dodgers before fleshing out this post tomorrow)

Not sure why people like LA. They don't look like anything special. The D'Backs are rocking their pitching staff (7 runs Monday, 10 runs tonight) Just because they brought in Joe Torre doesn't mean they'll improve. They were dumb enough to sign Andrew Jones. He's looked pathetic the last two games and is hitting .100 or something close to that.

MLB Power Rankings before the D-Backs' last to beat downs of LA:

edit: and that's a wrap!

D'Backs sweep the overrated LA Dodgers after sweeping the Rockies.

You're taking the sentence out of context. By winning the division last year, the Diamondbacks did something that no other team in 105 years of baseball history has EVER done; having more Runs Against than Runs Scored through the regular season AND won the division. Only five teams have ever done the same and made the post-season, but Arizona was the first to win the division with that dubious distinction (712 RS vs. 732 RA). For comparison, the Rockies had 860 RS and 758 RA, Cubs had 752 RS vs. 690 RA, and the Phillies had 892 RS vs. 821 RA.

Found this interesting (to me) article in the Washington Post, dated Sept. 25, 2007...
WaPo wrote:The Diamondbacks, in fact, may be one of the strangest playoff teams in recent history. Out of 16 NL teams, they rank 15th in batting average (.250), 14th in runs scored (690) and 16th in on-base percentage (.320). They have six rookie position players and one rookie starting pitcher seeing significant playing time. Their leadoff hitter, Young, carries a .298 on-base percentage. There's not a single .300 hitter or 100 RBI man on their roster. They have a bona fide ace in sinkerball specialist Brandon Webb (17-10, 3.02 ERA), but their other starting pitchers have ERAs hovering in the mid-4s.

...

As for this Pythagorean thing, it's actually fairly simple: The Diamondbacks are a staggering 32-18, best in the majors, in one-run games, but have 13 losses of seven or more runs.
No doubt the D'Backs are off to a great start (7-2), but certainly not as surpising as the Orioles or the Tigers start. Although the Diamondbacks are hitting the ball well, 17 HRs, 12 of those have come with the bases empty. Overall, they're leading the NL in runs, slugging, and OPS but I would credit their record just as much to their pitching.

It's still a little early to break out the champagne. The Rockies just took the first three games vs. Braves, with today's game being snowed out. Last night, they broke open for 12 runs. Matt Holiday is looking more comfortable and Helton has been solid.

Yeah the Dbacks are hot right now, but hammering Loaiza is nothing to brag about as everyone does that. Bills can be streaky and the Dbacks didnt really see much of the LA pen (Beimel, Broxton, Kuo, Saito....) since LA was down 4+ early. Jones does look like quite the fat sack out their right now and based on his history I dont see that changing anytime soon. It does look like I will be wrong and LA wont be in 1st early on, but I still think they are going to be there at some point. Basing your oppinion of them while there offense is getting tweaked around and your facing the 3,4,5 starters is a bit premature. When they put Jones on the bench or keep him 6-8 in the order LA will start to score a bit more.

The West should be fun to watch, everyone but the Giants have a chance.

Dodgers: Old and will be broken down by August

Rockies - Played over their heads last year, time to come down to earth but a legit chance to win the division.

Dbacks - No hitting at all, Webb is a 20 game winner but can they get past their lack of talent at the plate?

Padres - The team no one is talking about, there is a reason for that, boring team but solid all the way around, I could see them winning the West.

Giants - Fred Lewis (Super fast) will be a player, Velez as well (OMGZORS speed! fastest player in baseball). Best pitching in the West with Valdez assuming the closer role by the end of May. Won't win 75 games.

Why do people say the D'Backs have no hitting when they have the #1 offense?

As for pitching, we have an excellent staff.

Webb/Harren are the 1/2 combo but Randy Johnson will pitch Monday and should be an OK addition.

Doug Davis is solid but has cancer so will be out a month or two after he had surgery (today I think)

Micah Owings is also pitching well and bats so well he's been a pinch hitter for the D'Backs from time to time.

Winnow wrote:Why do people say the D'Backs have no hitting when they have the #1 offense?
They're basing that off of last season, which is certainly understandable. Baseball is streaky. Colorado on May 21 last year was 18-27. Would anyone have predicted them to make the playoffs, much less be in the World Series? At that point, I was lamenting the fact that they could have traded Helton to the BoSox for some young talent and 2007 was yet another rebuilding year.

The fact is Arizona will not keep the pace they're on now and win 126 games, hit 306 HRs, and score 918 runs. That's pretty unrealistic if not impossible considering last season they won 90 games, hit 171 HRs, and had 712 RBIs. They were near last in offense last season. Mark Reynolds and Justin Upton are playing out of their minds right now, but they're still tweeking with the line-up (7 different line-ups in 9 games). That could certainly mean more runs, since as I stated before 12 of their 17 current HRs are with the bases empty. That's scary.

A better benchmark is the end of May when you have two months of numbers to look at before really judging what a team has, but even that can change. Another example, the Yankees were .500 at the All-Star Break last year and went 51-25 after.

While I can't argue that the D'Backs aren't the most impressive complete team thus far, there's still 153 games left to play.

Swept Rockies in Denver
Swept Dodgers

Last two games:

Rockies 2
D'Backs 8

Rockies 3 (two runs scored off some scab pitcher in the 9th)
D'Backs 10

Will know tomorrow if the D'Backs get their third consecutive series sweep in the toughest division in baseball.

-highest scoring team in baseball
-best ERA in baseball
-lead league in HRs (21)
-youngest team in baseball

Series against S.F. and San Diego coming up.

Winnow, did the D'backs win last season's World Series like the Suns won the last 4 NBA titles?

The Florida Marlins are the youngest team in baseball. The D'backs are 4th, currently, in the NL in ERA (3.45). They're fifth in all of baseball. Kansas City (2.25) is first, which is surprising considering they're an AL team. Arizona is currently tied with the Florida Marlins for most HRs (21). The fucking MARLINS! While they currently have the most Runs, the ChiSox are #2 with one less game played.

So, what does all this mean? Nothing, unless you're a D'Backs fan and still hanging on to that sense of resentment over getting steamrolled in the 2007 NLDS.

No, Colorado has not won a World Series, but I don't see what that has to do with you posting wrong information 12 games into the 2008 season.

Edit: I respect people who are informed about the game, but when you start posting bullshit stats I tend to lose my patience. It took me 5 minutes to research your bogus bullet-point and prove them wrong. If you're going to pretend you know what the fuck you're talking about, try doing some research first instead of crying about how many WS Arizona has bought.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are the greatest team in the history of baseball. There may be other teams with more championships, but that's only 'cause they've been around longer.

I don't see what pointing to a World Series won 7 years ago has to do with validating your innacuracy. If that's the case, a Yankees fan can make all the false statements and just say "SCOREBOARD".

You're just moving on to the next excuse. The previous one was "buying a championship" which shows you haven't done your own research into payrolls and teams that have won multiple championships. Very few teams have won it all with low payrolls. Colorado and Arizona almost pulled it off last year. (25th and 26th lowest payrolls respectively in 2007)

How can I take someone criticizing my accuracy when they can't spell "inaccuracy"?

I'm not making excuses. I just don't see what winning the world series in 2001 has to do with making up statistics, such as Lowest ERA (WRONG), Youngest Team (WRONG), Most HRs (Half true).
How can I take someone criticizing my accuracy when they can't spell "inaccuracy"?
Because you were/are wrong about the "facts" you tried to pass off. I didn't mispell any of the numbers I pointed out. Instead of addressing how wrong you were about your bullet-points, you point to my mis-spelling as a means to avoid addressing being called out on something you were obviously just making shit up about.

As for buying a championship, you proved my point for me. Very few teams have won the WS that didn't buy it, Marlins and D'Back included. I didn't claim otherwise. It would have been nice to see the Rockies win it last year, but it was really David vs. Goliath.

So the point is that you didn't have a point about buying a championship. That's normal. Last year the D'Backs had a lower payroll than Colorado, thus invalidating the Rockies' NLCS win. It's only noteworthy if your payroll is lower.

BTW, I'm betting the D'Back's payroll was lower than the Yankees in 2001.

2001 Payrolls:

Yankees: $109,791,893
D'Backs: $81,206,513

Well not anymore. (ERA) They have the lowest age in the National League (and that's with the second oldest player in baseball on their roster) . Didn't realize AL teams were worth noting besides Boston and N.Y.

Arizona was the 4th best team in baseball last year. If you want to start adding stats about runs scored, etc, they go both ways (positive and negative)

Winnow, I totally agree with you and if you look at this logically. If the Rockies win is invalidated it moves the Dbacks into the World Series where they would have lost to a team with a higher payroll, thus invalidating that win and making the Dback's the 2007 WORLD CHAMPIONS.

NICE, now they have 4 consecutive NBA titles, a World Series and realistically they should have awarded the Sun Devils the National Championship since they were clearly better then everyone else. I see now why Winnow is so high on AZ sports, when you have all those titles, how can you not be?

All I'm looking for is a little respect for the D'Backs. They aren't a fluke, don't have a high payroll and are a young team that's getting better (having already finished #1 in their division last year as well as going to the NLCS)

According to a 2008 survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, the most common self-reported religious affiliation of Arizona residents are:

Roman Catholic - 25%
Evangelical Christian - 23%
Non-Religious / Unaffiliated - 22%
Mainline Protestant - 15%
Latter-Day Saint / Mormon - 4%
Others - 12%
This is just some more kickass information on the state where the D'Backs reside. I think it is superneato. :D

I saw him swing at a pitch that was 3' off the plate and I LOL.......until the next pitch that was in the same location for another swinging strike at that point I stopped laughing and took the Browns to the superbowl

D'Backs first to 10 wins, first to 11 wins!

B Webb was on the mound today:

I don't think B Webb has even peaked yet. The kid has an arm!

Impressive start by the DBacks, early in the season or not--Games in April do indeed count, as does momentum... Must be a great time to watch a winning team play in one of the better venues in the country.

Even though I have no vested interest in the NL West, I may end up being pretty wrong about my predictions.

Sure the games count, but its almost a gaurantee that every team will win 62 and lose 62........so dont pass out the pennant just yet.

They may yet win the division this year (i say they won't). Doesn't mean they weren't a fluke last year.

Last year they had the pitching and lacked run support. This year they have even better pitching along with better run support. What's not to like about the D'Backs?

I think it's your cheerleading of every Arizona team in every sports thread that might have people disliking the Diamondbacks, even though they are the greatest team in the history of baseball.

I am certainly not handing out any pennants--just commenting on the virtues of momentum. Plus, the NL West is more like a rotating sissy-fight to finish 5 games above .500 to win the division. :)

I disagree. That distinction belongs to the NL Central. The West has a great deal of pitching; Peavy, Webb, *cough* Zito *cough*, Trevor Hoffman, Maddux, Randy Johnson, to name a few.

Last year, the NL West had 4 teams finish above .500. All except the Giants. Their combined NL Record was 388-346 (.529), and the NL West was 236-199 for non division games (.542). Although the NL West Inter-League record was lower than the combined NL Central (34-44 vs. 43-50), they were horrible vs. the rest of the NL (178-225). Also, the Rockies swept the Yankees at Coors Field... still kicking myself for not going to any of those games.

This year, the NL Central is off to a great start, going 25-19 so far in non division games. The NL West is 12-11 among non-division teams, but most games have been division games in the West. The D'backs are off to an amazing start (Best Team Ever!), and the Rockies, Dodgers, and Padres will eventually get it going. I'm having a hard time not laughing at the Dodgers for signing Andruw, but he'll pick it up and probably bat around his average last season (.222).

Matt Cain is the best .333 winning percentage pitcher in the game.

Tim Lincecum Is something else as well, Zito is for the Giants a #3 pitcher, not a 1 or a 2, Depending on how Lowry is when he comes back, Zito is probably the only 18 million "4" in the history of the game.

Only thing the orange and black has is starting pitching (though the bullpen is finally decent... they all implode on the same day now generally speaking).

I still dont see the signing of Jones as that big of a deal, the Dodgers needed pop and a guy that can play CF and Jones fits that. Hunter wanted to play for the Dodgers but wanted more years. 2 years was a perfect deal for LA on Jones even if he has been crap at the plate he has played well in CF.

Even with Jones and a few other Dodgers batting ~.100 we have still won 7 games and are a measly 4 games behind the totally awesome megga hot greatest team evar!!1!! This is a team that will get a lot of base hits and has good team speed, even without Jones hitting the ball they are going to have a tough lineup

New MLB Power Rankings are out:

Preview:
1 Arizona Diamondbacks (Last Week: 1)

They have Brandon Webb, who does nothing but win with his Sinker from Hell, and could-be ace Dan Haren, and Micah Owings has had three straight good starts, and now Randy Johnson is back and looking pretty good. And, oh yeah, they have the best-scoring team in the game, and the reigning NL Manager of the Year and those cool snakeheads on their unis. The D'backs will cool off. But the heads will always be hot.

Padres 0 (Greg Maddox)
D'Backs 9

I'm not a big baseball fan. Is that a sign of a decent offense and good pitching for Arizona?

If the D'Backs have a weakness, it's their Pitcher Gonzales.

1. B Webb 4-0 (1.86 era)

2. D Haren 3-0 (1.80 era)

3. M Owings 3-0 (2.29 era)

4. R Johnson 0-0 (0.0 era 5 innings pitched)

Doug Davis pitched well but is now recovering from surgery to remove cancer something or another. He should be back soon. In the meantime, Edgar Gonzales has to try and fill the 5 spot.

edit: Edgar Gonzales allowed three runs but thankfully the fluke batting (#1 offense in baseball) of the D'Backs saved the game:

Padres 3
D'Backs 10

Cinncinatti Series - Lost
Colorado Series - Swept
L.A. Series - Swept
Colorado Series - Won
S.F. Series - Won
San Diego Series - Won

Looks like they're doing pretty well vs the NL West. 13-4 overall, 12-2 vs NL West

Best Records I see so far:

13-4 Arizona
12-6 St. Louis
12-7 Boston

By my calculations, the D'Backs should win the NL West by 55 games, give or take a game.

1. B Webb 4-0
2. D Haren 3-0
3. M Owings 4-0

Micah Owings is batting .308 (pitcher) had a slugging percentage of .688 last year. Dude is awesome hitter and 4-0 pitching this year with a 2.42 era.

B.Webb goes for win #5 tomorrow vs S.F.
